I went through a bout of severe depression, was hospitalized for a time. The biggest influence that turned the corner to healing was making my bed when I got up. I know it's weird but I figured if I could accomplish that 1 thing I could maybe do something else and I would be worth something. I would have value. I still struggle with the illness but have never been to that depth again. It is a beginning, a step, a positive step.

Funny fact, I am from Central America and when my siblings and I were kids, our grandmas use to tell us that "if we did not make our beds as soon as we got up, "the 'diablo' would come and dance on our beds." That is all it took, the four of us would make our beds as soon as we got up - we were so excited to seize the day, so we would spring out of bed. Till date, we all make our beds right after we get up.

I have been blown away by all your scholarly refernces in recent weeks, but I gotta tell you the reality of whole pineapples left untouched and food on top of the tupperware is where the rubber hits the road of my attempt to live my faith. If not too personal may I share I have been praying for you especially since Father Malachy went to be in another place. Thank you for your faithfulness to a weekly connection and for the making up the mercy moment as a second chance to misisng the heroic moment.

I am in minute 7:03 and I just want to thank you for this video. I would say I am a person who likes to pray daily and I pray while on my commute early in the morning. Because of Covid19 and the holiday travel, I am working from home this week and resume my normal hectic schedule on Tuesday this coming week. I need to sleep but I seldom get enough hours, mainly because sometimes it is hard to organize my time and I end up trying to do too much at the same time either at work or at home. This week I have messed up my schedule since I am at home and I do not have to get up at 04:45 to get ready and commute, but I know next week will be brutal, so your video is REALLY helpful and welcome. I agree with one of the people commenting that "going to bed earlier makes a huge difference." That is really what I need to work on. I insist on leaving my kitchen clean every night, everything in its place so in the morning I do not waste time finding things (there have been times when I have forgotten very important things when I don't leave everything ready at night...), but the "pineapples and tupperware" really rang a bell to me because that is the exact thing that happens at my home, everything "is too much work to do," and I end up "cutting the pineapples" all the time. Yes, I complain in my thoughts and sometimes I say it, but then I try to offer that as a "small token of appreciation" for what God does for me. The problem is that lately it causes me to stretch my day to the point I get little sleep and it is so hard to wake up in the morning. I have made my bed right after I get up since I was probably 8 years old :-), so I will try working really hard at going to bed early - I love to start my day with a bit of exercise and that is "my first cup of coffee." I will add the motivation of reading a bit of the Bible right after I wake up and see if that helps. Anyhow, so sorry for this long post. Just wanted to thank you and thank the comments for the tips.

I find it helpful to have a short, morning offering to pray, giving, dedicating the day to God. In my personal prayer life, I am committed to praying orthros (morning prayer), according to the Byzantine Rite, each day. For those unfamiliar with this version of morning prayer, it’s fairly long, and requires a commitment, as I have to wake up early enough to pray this before work. But, sometimes, in that confusing state of grog in the morning, it feels insurmountably undesirable. So, I have a few prayers of dedication that I pray before my icons of Christ, the Theotokos, and a few others. I then pray the dedication prayer (which I can happily share if anyone wants to see the prayer itself), followed immediately by the Nicene Creed. Only then do I go downstairs to make coffee. While coffee is brewing, I pray another series of morning offering-esque prayers, including the scriptures for the day, and a few prayers specifically for the saint of the day, and/or the festal season, if my church is in the midst of one. At that point, I then take a cup of coffee back to my room, periodically nursing it as I now pray orthros. For me, it’s kind of like having coffee with Jesus, my eternal bridegroom, such as spouses may drink coffee together in the morning, before getting to their daily responsibilities.

So funny - but so true! I'm so happy, after 50 years of alarm clocks, I've earned the 'right' to get up when my body wants to - which isn't much later than my working-days life - but it sure feels great!! :-) Ah yes, the making-the-bed routine feels so good - especially when you get ready to go back to bed later that night. Just being greeted by a pile of rumpled bed sheets just gives you a negative feeling before you even start. Lol! Great video, as always, Fr. :-)

For us instead of pineapples are grapes, when they're dirty and with the vine they go bad, but as soon they are clean and dry in tupperware in the fridge to snack on they can be gone in one day. Oh the little battles. Great reflection Fr. Mark-Mary. "Poco a poco vamos a llegar!" Dios te bendiga

It was apparently revealed to St. Elizabeth Anne Seton that all the good actions by people since the beginning of mankind, choosing the good and rejecting evil contributed to Mary being born as the perfect consolation (me paraphrasing). So that must mean that all the good actions not only chain react in your own life, but in the whole of everything that exists to counteract the effects of the evil which in it’s turn affects everything that exists. I think of the earth opening up to swallow the blood of Abel. The earthquake at the death of Jesus is proof that creation cracks open when we sin, and so does it heal when we choose against sin. So making your bed is way more profound than any of us realize. It pushes back evil and sets things right.

Yes, I agree. Another thing that eventually led to my getting organized was that I decided never to leave dirty dishes in the sink. It either gets hand washed or it goes into the dishwasher. This reminds me so much about what I learned years ago in school. There was this one teacher who there was just something different about him. So one day he taught our class about laziness. He said lazy people end up doing more work. We all had this puzzled expression on our faces. He said lazy people finish last and do more work to finish it. Like piling wood for example. If you work hard and take your time to get it right, the wall won't fall. I actually learned this when I was 14 or 15 I think, and I am referring to piling wood making several walls back to back. I learned quickly that being lazy means I have to work twice as much. Same goes for sleeping in. Story goes I had to take down those walls of wood, and start back over doing it right. Those hours of work were lost, but I learned a valuable lesson. And sometimes we too need to do this with our lives. Let the walls come down so you work on what's most important in building up our faith. Doing it right, because God laughs at the fool who did his job half heartedly.

My only suggestion is that when you first get out of bed, that you pull the bed covers back so that the accumulated moisture from your body can evaporate while you go pray, shower, shave (or not shave 😜) and eat. Then go back and make your bed after it has aired out. It keeps your bed fresher longer. Of course there may be times when you can’t wait and just have to make it first thing.
