I found your channel 2+ year ago and made this change to my swing - where-in I only move the club in my backswing with my BACK (no arms) - and then have an additional 'tiny' bit arms feeling at the very end. I went from a 12 handicap to 5 almost immediately. I've helped many guys on the range with this very idea - and I can agree with you, I have never come across a single range practicer that turns the club with their back - it's ALL arms and way too much arms. Your 8 inches vs 20 inches is a perfect stat to quote going forwards. Awesome!

One of the best vids you guys have ever put out! 🙌🏼 As I’ve lost a little flexibility with age (52) I’ve fallen into a bad habit of making a “fake turn” to get that deep hands look from down the line. It’s caused a flip at impact and high ballooning iron shots. I knew I was doing it but seeing it in 3D finally made the light bulb come on! 💡 Thanks for this post!!

This was an all time Emmy winner. Importantly, you confirmed something I discovered in my swing several months ago. I had started to rotate my rear hip so that it was (the feel) directly behind my rear heal on the backswing, Then my magic move was to feel a squat (Sam Snead) to unwind the hip allowing me to forget the arms altogether.. .This produced great ball contact and moved my divot in front of the ball. I had noticed as a by product (and now your video corrects my thinking that this by product is anything but): it is the most important product. I have never hit the ball as solidly and cleanly. The result is that keeping the arms within the torso on the backswing (as you point out) which is critical, can be accomplished by the rotation of the hips on the takeaway. You guys are fantastic and really simplify what otherwise is an almost impossible task to master -- Golf.

@OpaKnows3 жыл бұрын
So the big take away from this talk is, IF you can achieve the same amount of range of motion, THEN this is the position (in space) your hands should be in. I can get my hands around my trail shoulder, but they’re nowhere near as high, because I can’t rotate as much. And that’s okay.
@AthleticMotionGolf3 жыл бұрын
The first golfer has a limited range of motion, but still gets the hand correct, and still wins at the highest level. I'd bet a dozen 🍩 you have as much or more than him🙂
@OpaKnows3 жыл бұрын
@@AthleticMotionGolf I guarantee I have far less range of motion. If I want to raise my lead arm above my shoulder, I have to physically pull it up with my trail arm, all the while experiencing a high level of pain. I'm talking about multiple surgeries just to put me back together again. Unless this multiple-wins-on-tour guy has been shot and blown up a couple times, there's no comparison here. Don't make a bet you can't win, unless you're feeling charitable. I'm not too proud to accept charity.

Can anyone help me on this? How do you achieve this without disconnecting the left arm from your torso? When I try it, feels like I am lifting my arms directly in front of me. If for example I tried to keep a towel between arm and torso (to feel connected), it would immediately drop out. I totally understand the concept, and know I am hugely guilty of swinging my arms across my chest (resulting in a horrible over the top downswing and flip), but don’t seem to be able to work out how to achieve this. Despite this, I’ve managed to get down to an index of 6, but desperately want to change.
@AthleticMotionGolf10 ай бұрын
"Connection" is one of the most misapplied terms in golf. I think a better way of practicing this is to make this correct arm movement, then let that be your new feel for "connection." Keeping a towel under your arm is not a good barometer for connection.

very interesting video ! How much of the difference in Pro's and Am's is a function of shoulder mobility ? Seems to me you need good trail shoulder mobility to get the Pro's positions you show on the backswing
@AthleticMotionGolf3 жыл бұрын
From age 6 through 82, we haven't yet seen a golfer who didn't have the shoulder mobility to not do this. I've had the good fortune of two shoulder surgeries (October most recently) and still have plenty of mobility to do this. It actually takes more mobility to do this poorly 🙂
@nicholasdemetriades91543 жыл бұрын
Oh boy this is hard work! So much easier to use the hands and arms and hit 200 balls a day. I used to do this with scores anywhere from 70 all the way up to 90! I found a good way to practice this is to wear many layers (5) which keeps the arms less mobile forcing you to get power from your turn. Its amazing how much more time you feel you have in the through swing.I would add it helps immensely to tilt from the hips properly at address.

Love it... now... is there a similar correlation on the release of the club? E.g. How much of a problem is drawing the right arm (for a right handed golfer) across the chest post impact? Seems that using that trail arm to release the club instead of coordinating good rotation through impact can cause a great deal of trouble... I'd love to see that half of the swing on gears... e.g. trail arm release and rotation... Thanks!

This was such an eye opener to me. I thought making a full turn included BOTH the shoulders AND the arms across the chest. Big mistake! This is the stuck move you hear about which makes it so difficult to get back to impact without standing up. You have to early release in this scenario. When I tried to keep my arms in front of my body it didn’t feel powerful at first because I wasn’t used to turning my shoulders fully which you need to do. Plus I had an inside takeaway which kills this move by dragging your arms across your chest. You can see from the overhead views in this video there has to be an opening/gap between the arms so you can bounce your left arm against your chest on the downswing. Once you master this move with the re-centering move the AMG guys coined your ball will fly off the clubface like a rocket. Thanks Fellas…. you guys are the best!
@zachstephens57773 жыл бұрын
Great Stuff!! This is eye opening to say the least and pretty much described my takeaway (throwing the arms across chest) and the feel I have the rest of swing and especially at impact (flippy/slappy).. as a former baseball player and a handsy hitter I’ve always struggled with the start of golf swing because I manipulate the club so much with my hands plus starting from a static position is difficult (coming from a rhythm timing based start)... always good to see what is “actually” happening instead of what you THINK you see... Now to go figure it out!! Thx again!!
@Far2hip2 жыл бұрын
OK, so before I go any further, if you asked me to put my arms in a backswing position, but keep my torso facing forward with no rotation, personally I would lift up and slightly to the right. From what I’ve established working to get myself into a position to make a good solid strike down on that ball, I lift my arms up. If I pull back in any substantial way, everything goes to crap, especially consistency in ball flight. If I rotate and lift up toward my top of the backswing, I hit that call straight with excellent ball flight every single time. Let’s see what you guys say now, lol. (Hitting play button😁) 😎😎😎

true. but!!!! remember, with better contact, attack angle, dynamic loft or shaft lean.... you inherit more distance naturally not necessarily with more swing speed. this is because more force is applied to the ball.

So, to take this further, if you DONT have a huge turn, many amateurs are overcompsating by having their arms continue moving AFTER the turn has stopped. If you just turn to your natural maximum, your arrms stop when your turn stops, in a "proper motion"?

The lead arm shouldn't move itself across the chest. It's the trail arm bend, pulling the elbow towards the body that move the hands to trail side of the chest. The lead arm just stays straight. Unless the trail arm bend is excessive (it shouldn't be), this motion should keep the hands in front of the chest. The arm bend movement should be easy to repeat and to reverse. During the downswing simply straighten your trail arm at impact. At least that's how I understand it. Thanks for the great content!

I see this and my immediate reaction is: how do they avoid launching the club head out in front of them immediately in the downswing with so little depth? We shallow by lowering the arms, right? If I lower the arms from this position it’s like I’m chopping wood and the club launches out over the swing plane line. I’m definitely guilty of getting the arms too across my chest in the backswing but it’s so that I can start the downswing with a move AWAY from the ball which shallows the club. I’m sure this is 100% correct but there must surely be something else that goes with it.

Hi, do you have any players that you teach that we can actually see swing? or can we get the names of the Pros in which you are using gears on?

But you didn't ask me. I would have been the exception. I knew the 'correct' answer, honest ... because I've already watched a ton of your videos 😊 Your GEARS stuff, in particular, has helped me gain a far better (clearer and more accurate) understanding of the golf swing, and contributed to a 10 stroke reduction in my handicap over the past year. Have I said "thanks" yet? No? Ooops. Thanks guys 👍👍👍

Aren't those TWO completely different things??? ONE seems to be the "back/behind" movie ... while the other is the UP motion.... swing could be made a whole yard above golfers head without going outside his shoulder inwards from top view ... !! First time i'm half lost with u guys .... would however love to see the camera from 45° angle through his right shoulder into his left elbow at setup and see if his rotation keeps his elbow within that shoulder line from beginning till the top of his swing. Seems to me those professionals all do that more or less (couple maybe lift it way offline though = Wolff at least) .... take care..... luv ya guys ;)))

So down the line, left hand doesn't pass right shoulder?! It stays more connected to sternum than majority emulate.... brilliant! I too have discovered a 'shorter back' swing reigns in my dispersion... and now more work will eliminate flip.... So was this the difference between Rory and Poulter yesterday? I can't help but think Rory in his pursuit of speed and distance has literally reached too far back and has thrown his timing whereas Poulter has always swung within himself, balanced and what I now see as hands connected to chest.... So how does one make improvements... is it merely 'one piece' take away? Thank you!!

Great video. This makes me think I should religiously practice Nick Faldos preset drill where he sets the wrists and moved the arms the 10” across the body then makes a backswing from this position. Thank you for all your great content.

Worked on that today was getting 25 yards more distance and hitting straighter shots

This is probably one of the most common fault that average golfers make. Great video.

@@AthleticMotionGolf And such a mental hurdle to overcome because it feels weak not whipping the arms behind you.

I have been reading and watching golf instructional material since I first grabbed a club when I was 10. I remember taking my dads golf digest into the backyard and swinging the club into positions I saw in the magazine. I have this sick feeling that I was already destroying my swing at 10 years old. This stuff you guys put out is so eye opening and in some cases depressing because I feel like I have to almost forget a lot of the info on the golf swing that I thought was correct. Unfortunately, at 53 yrs old i don’t have the flexibility and strength I had when I was young. However, better late then never. Keep the info coming, guys!

Soooooo the young dude looks like a serial killer...... Awsome awsome awsome golf instructions from these boys. No bullshit,no side talkin', just facts. Thanks guys. I love the chemistry these guys have. It's definitely what makes y'all different from everybody else. They love it and are interested in it and it shows on tape.

I think I have a descent question. This video is a great example of how looks or feel can be deceiving, especially with the camera. When you look at tilt at address and consider the right hand being lower than the left causing a natural tilt, how much tilt is actually required for iron shots? And if you expand this to hitting up with driver, how much actual tilt is then required? I see some people on here with concerns about hitting the ground and advising more tilt. Can gears help us with this and these? Video? Thanks
