Lukashenko arrived in power in 1994, 6 years before Putin. He has been beating on protesters and rigging elections long before Putin. In 2020, it was belarussian cops doing the beating, not russian. Post-soviet autocratic regimes have their own agency, despite Russia's influence.

They (almost all) deliver smart answers so there is no way someone can get in trouble if they'd be arrested and questioned. There is always possibility of being beaten up to death in some dark alley by "unknown" perpetrators. But I really doubt someone would do it.

they're chronically scared to go that route. They'd rather choose dictatorship over revolution. They got a chance in 2020, and the opposition openly refused to repeat what Ukrainians did in their country. Some of their own people actually joked about it and said "they're peaceful nation and won't start a violent resistance". Well, you don't overthrow a dictatorship by peacefully protesting. So, I guess, what they have today is their own choice. They deserve what they got.

Belarus like 35 years ago others could only start a revolution if Russia would not interfere like the USSR didn’t in 1989. but the man is right. Democracy is in decline all around the world. Rich rulers come to power very often by election cause democracies failed with globalization and neoliberalism. Not that it would get any better necessarily but they want to believe that one ruler can decide faster and ruthless to peoples benefit… the opposite is happening or just few very very very rich and the silent majority in utter poverty.
