Here’s the thing you need to keep in mind if you want to use this technique: the SSL channel compressor has a variable knee tied to the compression ratio. At lower ratios it’s a relatively gentle knee but that knee hardens as you increase the ratio. By the time you have the ratio knob at 12 o’clock you’re getting what amounts to hard knee peak limiting. In some cases that may be all well and good but using this “one knob approach” means that your gain staging becomes very important. For example; let's say you feed a relatively hot signal into the channel strip. You’ll probably only have to move the ratio knob a tiny bit to start getting compression and since your ratio is low the knee is going to be very gentle. On the other hand if you send that same signal into to the channel strip but it was recorded quietly and has not been gained up you’ll need to crank that ratio knob a lot further to get some compression and then you’ll be getting hard kneed limiting rather than gentle compression. So, you could gain stage your tracks to get predictable results with this technique or…. you could just use the threshold and ratio knobs the way they were intended.

Perfectly said. This is excellent advice. I was going to comment similar but no need. You nailed it.

Awesome, thanks Doc! It's amazing how many of the little hardware tricks are out there, but you gotta learn em one by one. I didn't know to shut down the threshold so tight on this compressor. Sounds great, thanks!

You know why you're awkward? Because you're AutoTuned to the bone! Haha, jokes aside, yet another great tutorial. :D I'm partial to the G strip myself.

Thanks Alek. As far as tuning goes....its Pop music...it’s what is expected. Try not hard tuning a vocal and the label will call and say the vocals sound terrible. It’s not so obvious when all the other instruments are playing but that’s what it takes to get hired and nice budgets for pop music. For example below is a link to the BRAND new J-Lo song. Thanks for watching. kzbin.info/www/bejne/haPTaJSgZtxre8ksi=b0YLyazmjuUk3C3v

Hi Bob! Your videos are so helpful, thank you for your effort! One question: I see you and a lot of pro mixers still using the old version of the Waves SSL E channel strip for vocal mixing and other stuff. One would think that there are newer and better ssl channel strips out there. Is there a reason why specifically the old Waves version is still used so widely in the pro world? Thank you for your answer! Cheers

I have about 5 different versions of this channel strip and they all sound a little different but all have their own thing. There are several older plugins that do a specific thing that I still use because of that uniquness. Newer doesn't mean better necessarily...just different. Thanks for watching!

Applying this technique right now on a recent vocal recording, just after seeing this video. I’m in GarageBand using the stock Apple compressor, but it works beautifully. Vocal simultaneously comes forward and melts into the mix. Really appreciate your lessons, Bob!

BOOOOOOOOB!!!!! This is how I do it, and works every time. I have the SSL channel in almost every other channel too. Sounds amazing! I love that version and also the CLA mixhub and EV2, but the one that sound better to my ears is the official SSL one, specially if you use the SSL 360 app. I use all of them because each one has a distinctive sound!! As always, thank you Bobby!
