This might sound like a joke but if you are in a mental hospital and want to get out this is how to get discharged: make everyone believe you love it there and want to stay for the rest of your life. You will be discharged very soon.

My uncle is an alcoholic and he was drunk one night at his sisters house. He wasn’t hurting himself or anyone else but the cops put handcuffs on him and said he wasn’t being arrested. They brought him to a mental hospital instead of a rehab. They brought him in on an emergency hold. He was supposed to stay there 72 hours and he’s done that!!! They keep holding him and my mom went to visit him and he was so drugged up and was saying they were being mean. He has done nothing wrong!!! He’s not mental at all!! He could barely talk! He was like a zombie!!! They aren’t letting him outside in the fresh air or anything! They are basically breaking his spirit!! He’s an alcoholic not a crazy person!!!! What do we do?? I am so scared about being committed again. I don’t have any help at all. My parents have never cared and they should have filed law suits and really gone after the psychiatrists who so recklessly overmedicated me and ended up poisoning me making me need medical treatment on several occasions. I feel like I am just getting worse again and I have no one who cares. I don’t want to end up dead I was almost completely bedridden in my youth to those drugs and treatments. Parents, loved ones, anyone who cares for someone struggling. Please care and be there as much as possible. These commitments and some of these treatments can feel like a death sentence. I still feel like I did something horribly wrong or that there is something horribly wrong with me to warrant such, to put it frankly, abuse and medical negligence.

I wish my parents had watched this video when I was trapped last time. Luckily it didn’t end up being for too long because we had connections with someone who could call their CEO but the blatant violation of rights was rather outrageous. It also seemed that no staff in the facility knew anyones rights so everyone on the unit was extra on edge because they had no way to be informed (unless a loved one would’ve done these things). Overall it was a terrible experience but I’m thankful to now have taken the time to review Utah’s laws and be informed for myself or loved ones in the future.

To piggy back on your #1 tip, always always always lawyer up. This is coming from someone who has an A.S. and a B.S. in Criminal Justice and has been in law enforcement for 6+ years as a correctional officer as well as a deputy at the county and state level. You literally gain NOTHING from speaking to us, haha. You only implicate yourself, and if you are sane and/or not guilty, it only hurts your case. Regarding tip #2, when I worked for CPS (Child Protective Services) we bypassed the ROI via state law. We automatically were able to receive any and all medical documents if there was an open child abuse/neglect assessment ongoing.

I'm in the process of letting go of my past. In the recent past, I received an involuntary commitment order and forced psychiatric medication over the course of two months approximately. I would have been grateful for an independent advocate during my stay. I feel it could have been helpful to have a second or third opinion from a psychiatrist of my choice. I might not have communicated effectively partially due to my neuro developmental disabilities (high functioning autism, adhd) contributing to delayed growth in certain areas including communication skills as an example. I appreciated the care I received at the time

Almost no one can afford a lawyer, and almost non of the lawyers have any experience in the field. Moreover, many patients - for good reasons - have lost all their belief in authorities. People are so sick from trauma, but primary from the drugs, that they can hardly stand on their own legs. They have no social network and probably no one would ever believe them 💔

In Canada if you are in a psychiatric hospital you still have a right to refuse treatment, so you can refuse medication. There are exceptions, but if you are deemed not to be able to make decisions then a substitute decision maker (usually an immediate family member) has to agree to treatment.

How often can relatives visit their patient in the hospital. ,,, And what happens to patient who have been discharged and the relatives are not coming to get the patient?
@A_Psych_Nurse
@A_Psych_Nurse Жыл бұрын
visitation hours/frequency is entirely dependent on the hospital. After COVID a lot of hospitals stopped allowing visitors. Sometimes patients are discharged to the street (if this is their adamant preference), sometimes they are discharged back home, sometimes to alternative care facilities/group homes), sometimes they are mandated to stay somewhere while out in the community. It's VERY situational.

@hueyandmo
@hueyandmo 2 жыл бұрын
Almost all of them. Getting a lawyer does help scare the hospital into letting people go, but 90% of people can't afford that. My parents did it for me, but it cost them $5000 just for a few hours of legal help. All the other tips are useless. Knowing the rules doesn't help when most hospitals don't follow rules. What does work is having the patient lie, go along with whatever hoops the hospital wants then to jump through and generally act compliant while in there. That drastically increases the odds of them getting out early. I've had a friend successfully get out by lying and pretending the hospital made her better, when actually it made her worse, as most do. I also knew someone who got out early by pretending he couldn't talk. Because he was being quiet and unemotional, they let him go. The less emotion you show, the more they will treat you like a human being. Showing emotion only gets you punished. Another thing is to suggest a transfer. Most hospitals will resist requests to let the patient go outright because they are afraid of liability. But if the loved ones say they are planning to transfer the patient to another facility and sign a release "against medical advice" form, they are more likely to let the patient go. Especially if you give a compelling reason, such as wanting them to be in a hospital closer to family. They tend not to follow up and check if you actually brought them to a new hospital. Another important one is insurance. Many UHS hospitals will kick people out who no longer have insurance coverage because they are only holding people for the money anyway (see the buzzfeed expose). If they believe you won't be profitable, they'll let you go. If you can convince your insurance company to stop paying, you could get out. Also, legally speaking, the "gravely disabled" criteria only works if the patient has no one else besides the hospital willing to care for them. I know hospitals generally ignore this, but it's worth trying. If a loved one states in writing that they are willing and able to care for the patient, it is illegal for the hospital to continue holding them. Importantly, don't make a break for it. Many of these places have armed guards, and they will shoot you if you try to escape. A funny way of "helping" someone if you ask me, but it happens. Another thing to be aware of is what language the patient uses. The hospital is looking for signs that they are suicidal, so it is important to never mention having a plan for suicide and avoid admitting to any suicidal thoughts. You also should hide any thoughts that resemble schizophrenia or mania, as those are considered some of the worst disorders. Don't mention hearing voices or talking to Jesus, and try to talk slowly or not at all. These people are basically thought police, so you have to be careful about revealing your thoughts to them.
@A_Psych_Nurse
@A_Psych_Nurse 2 жыл бұрын
@@hueyandmo I think you bring up some great tips here--and I especially agree w/ the idea of going/pretending to go along w/ the flow and saying how much the hospital has helped you. Stroking the egos of those in power definitely helps and I've first hand witness patients be help much longer than necessary b/c they wanted to contradict the psychiatrist or question their psychologist.

If you are on involuntary meds and you don't like some of the meds can they be changed?
@A_Psych_Nurse
@A_Psych_Nurse Жыл бұрын
sorry boss I thought I replied to this comment. They can be changed at the discretion of the psychiatrist, but they are unlikely to be changed unless, according to the psychiatrist, the risks outweigh the benefits. The psychiatrist also has to petition for a list of meds she'd like to try as involuntary, meaning that the court/judge will need to approve the list, and then if they change a med, it must come from that judge-approved list. (When I saw involuntary med lists it was usually around 10 meds or so long, and would include meds to manage potential side effects, meds like Cogentin, Keppra, etc.).

@@A_Psych_Nurse What if people have a hard time taking meds, and would it be easier to take it a different way (besides the mouth, pill shape form?) (When I been diagnosed with a cancerous tumor called non-hodgkin lymphoma cell b and went through chmeo, because my tumor was the size of a mango (191mm) I basically had a very hard time swallowing.) A lot better now but when I take things in a pill shape even small ones like a size of a piece of corn I still had a hard time swallowing it sometimes it fells like I'm choking a little. (My meds are cough and laxatives I don't take it all of the time only as needed) (do you think it is a good option if people have a hard time taking things in pill forms to find alternative a better way for them to take ther meds (if I had to take meds I'll perfer anything that is not a pill) (voluntarily)

@@nickr9019 Yeah absolutely--thankfully some of the meds we administer do come in dissolvable or injectable forms. And sometimes the side effects from those very meds make it difficult to swallow as well (from psychotropics).

Hi I’d like to ask in your experience why black patients are more likely to be detained in psyche wards?
@A_Psych_Nurse
@A_Psych_Nurse Жыл бұрын
Hi Julie. I'm unaware of this statistic. Do you have a source for it? I've heard stats where blacks are disproportionately imprisoned, and we had a lot of patients come from jails, maybe there's a correlation. It seems as though they are disproportionately in psych wards as well. We had a lot of black patients who might have been labeled as "thugs" by the system, and there was certainly a lot of closet discrimination against those carrying this label.

@@A_Psych_Nurse thanks for your reply I hope you read the link I sent. Black people who come across mental health services are more likely to be detained (4 times more likely). It makes it less of an option for seeking mental health services for fear of incarceration and labelling and forced medication. In order to expand on this I’d require a direct non public method of correspondence
