Thank you so much for this advice. I am currently studying masters in internet of things with cyber security but watching this video I guess I have to go for this CompTIA exam first

Great video. I currently have A+ certification and Microsoft Networking; I'm currently working towards Networking + cert. IT is really a great field but getting certified is the hardest part with cost being a factor. Each exam cost about 250.00 and up. A+ certification has two exams totaling 500.00 dollars. Wish you guys the best in your IT careers. To add, I attend MyComputerCareer.

Hey Don, You have no idea how glad I am to have come across this video, because I've been looking for something like this. I have been so confused lately about what type of certifications to go for because I really want to work in the IT field but did not know how to begin start. And now that I've seen this video I know I need to start at the base which is the A+ certification. As of now, I am taking a CCNA certification and hopefully it helps with my goal. THANK YOU again posting your insight on youtube about how to start in the IT field. ---ABDUL

You can start of specializing in IT with no experience. Mist IT careers have entry level rolls and certifications geared specifically for that specialty within IT. I don't know why do many people starting off in IT think they have to work a helpdesk. For example, I got into datsbase administration by starting off as a SQL Developer straight out of college with no experience besides volunteering experience which all I did was observed an SQL developer do his job for a few months. I had no internship experience either. I obtained the Entry-Level Microsoft Technology Associate certificate and built databases at home that I self studied for from books and online training courses like udemy and the skills I learned from that, I put on my resume. That's it. I got a developer job at a small Tech company. Worked there for a year as a developer making $60,000 a year then moved on to bank of america where I was offered a Jr database administrator job making $130,000 a year. When the Sr database administrator retired after doing that job for 35 yrs, I took over his role and my salary went up to $250,000 a year. This is the best job ever. Its very low stress too and the hours are great. Sometimes I might have to wear a pager but that's rare.

Ryan Heard your title at the first company was sql/database developer? and how did you get to observe someone at work, how did you find them? what books did you read? what udemy courses? im passionately intrested in this field

The best advice I can give you is to go to college. If it wasn't for college, I would not have been introduced to all the recruiters I met at career fairs. College opened up ma y doors for me to find my first job. I know college is not for everyone a f I have heard of people getting into the field without college but it would be wayyy more harder if you consider the fact that IT isn't what it used to be and most companies require degrees now as a minimum requirement anyways which sucks. Through college, I was able to also participate in several internships which my college career advisors also found for me. What people fail to relilalize is college is very important and far more involved than just obtaining a degree. College comes with slot of things like experience (internships), networking, degrees, etc. You get all that when you go to college. I can't stress enough how important college is. If you can afford to do so, please please go to college. That's just my perspective from the success I've had going into IT. Oh, and you get paid more with a degree too. I make $20,000 more a year compared to a guy at my company doing the same thing as me. Take care

Ryan Heard thank you a b.s in information system would be more practical for databases right? the curriculum seems more practical/hands on
@peaceful4you4088 жыл бұрын
+tworains2 yes. Degrees like Information Systems, Information Technology or Information Science all serve the same purpose and are geared toward IT careers such as database admin, Network engineering, systems admin, etc. Now, you can also go Computer Science but that degree is more for Producing IT Technologies instead of Maintaining what's already been created like careers in IT/IS. Example of careers that are suitable for Computer Science people are stuff like programming/development. Jobs like Database Developer, Web Developer, Java Developer, Etc. I must earn you though, the Computer Science degree is almost always 99.9% the way more difficult degree at any college because of all the math involved in it. Most students start it and don't finish it. It's a very hard a d long degree to get because of the prerequisite requirements to get into all the actual math classes required for the degree. If your looking for just a fast, easy to get degree with way less requirements to graduate, get the IT/IS degree.

Hi Don, great video. My name is Ivan Velez and Im 52 years old and want to change careers and that is getting a career into IT field. I only have a GED Diploma. Is it best that I go to a trade tech school and learn hands on or learning online like CompTIA? How should I get started?
@ACILearning4 жыл бұрын
A trade school is a great way to learn, but it can be very expensive. Check your local community college to see if they have anything in place. You can also try going it alone and doing self study. In either case, CompTIA IT Fundamentals is a great starter certification for someone just getting in to the field. You will need to be motivated and focused, but plenty of people do it every day. Best of luck in your studies!

Hello, you did a great job at answering this question. I would like to also find out your view on getting started with Business or Data Analytics since this is a relatively new career field that people from other areas are gravitating toward. I am considering a Master's in Business Analytics and I already have a Bachelors degree in Business and I am currently an Accountant with 10 years of experience and since I am an Accountant could an SAP FICO Certification help me get in with no I.T. experience? Thanks

Don, what are your thoughts on going to a community college to get an associate's degree or a certificate in IT. I already have a master's in business and worked in the fraud industry, but am considering making a jump to the IT field. If I can just work on the CompTIA and other certs from home than that would probably be preferable, but for someone with a higher education background, should I try to explore obtaining another degree to get started? any thoughts
