One thing that helped me start dressing up more instead of just wearing t shirts and jeans/joggers was dressing up one piece of clothing at a time. An OCBD instead of the t shirt, chinos instead of jeans, loafers instead of running shoes. Helps build up confidence gradually!
@Gent.Z9 ай бұрын
That's a great strategy. And wearing an OCBD, chinos, and loafer is a great, sophisticated look that you can wear in almost any situation
@FlatcapHobbit9 ай бұрын
Proof that dressing well doesn’t have to mean a full suit and tie, sophistication can be formal or casual.
@thechairman748 ай бұрын
I find that certain classic men's items look better and more "acceptable" if that's a term than others. Like wearing an overcoat looks fine. Wearing a blazer or sport coat also. I like to wear flat caps. But if I wear a flat cap with a sport coat it looks "off". Also, dressing overly classically stylish in warm weather also seems "off". I wouldn't go wearing seersucker and a straw boater if you know what I mean. Wherever I go, I'm almost always the best dressed man there. Rarely do I see men wearing a suit or sport coat. On the occasions that I do, they often never have everything together. It's usually the shoes. Cheaper, not shined, not full grain.
@thechairman748 ай бұрын
Changing out nonstop jeans for chinos is a smart move, and who wants to always wear the same color trousers?? It's odd. I hate being proscriptive with clothes, but the rule about no jeans, sneakers or T-shirts should be number one. After that, feel free to make choices. We don't want to tell guys what not to wear, but clearly the classic style doesn't include those three types of clothing.
@FlatcapHobbit8 ай бұрын
I would disagree slightly about the flat cap not working with a sport coat or suit. Made from a fine cotton, wool or linen so that the fabric doesn’t clash, and perhaps more importantly, a cap that has more of the classic baggier proportions can work really well. The problem is many modern flat caps are very narrow to the head so the proportions don’t visually play well with the width of the padded shoulders of the jacket.

Attending church is the best place to try out more formal clothes or tie, and to get accustomed to it when you choose, since many people at church wear casual clothes and also several wear ties or jacket-&-tie, and no one bothers you about clothes whether casual or formal, plus it shows respect. Happy Easter everyone!

I think your philosophy about dressing sharp and well is a great idea. I dress well the vast majority of the time and women love it. I work in an office and I love wearing blazers, sports coats, and a suit if I want. I spend a lot of money on my clothes and it makes me feel good. Keep up the good work and maybe other guys will elect to be Suited and Bootied.

Thanks for posting this informative post. It does take courage and self confidence to dress the way you feel. So many times I have been in a public setting (nice restaurant, playhouse, concert hall, etc) and felt like I was the only one who dressed for the occasion. It bothered me at first, but I got used to it. Now I feel comfortable and confident wherever I am. Side note: Women seem to appreciate it more than men.

My dream growing up was always wearing a 3 piece suit. Especially the waistcoat part but I never felt worthy enough to wear one plus they’d fell out of fashion by the early 00s. Then when I became a manager I decided I’d earned the right to wear one. An they were just coming back in fashion when I became a company director and I wore many 3 piece suits and mixers and still do. Only advice I can give people is never cower when dressed well. Stand tall and act confident even if you’re feeling insecure. If you’re worried about saying the wrong thing then don’t say much at all and follow that advice and you’ll be a silent presence that dominates a room that a lot of people will want to talk to. Basically fake it until you make it. It’s only yourself you have to prove anything to. Try to be a little better than you were the day before.

This video felt really personal. I live in México and I always love this kind of style. However, I always struggle with people around me, because they perceive this life style as something presumptuous among other things, and of course, they made the same jokes about it. This makes me realize, we are not alone, and that the passion for this lifestyle is bigger than we thought. Excellent video, as always.

Excellent video! Good advice for men who may be afraid to dress up. My late father was my inspiration to dress up. He was a young man during the Great Depression. He always wore a sports coat, tie, dress shoes, and a phodora. I am 66, and I love the classics, such as suits and sports coats. I do get compliments, but since I live in San Diego, I get the "Why are you so dressed up, or who are you trying to impress?" I tell them this how I honor my late father, and I like to dress well. Don't worry about the critics. There are many stores that you can find to build up your wardrobe without breaking the bank.

All good advice. As an aspiring and well dressed gent, l can honestly say that wherever and whenever l receive a reaction to how l present myself, the verdict is always positive. I really enjoy being sharply dressed and what comes with it. One must stand up straight, walk your world and own it. Fear nothing and be a true, brave and upright chap. The world will come to you. Cheers

I started with switching my wardrobe to chinos and dress shirts. Looks more formal but not too formal. Then I started wearing suit pants just because they were more comfortable than the chinos. Then when I had the pants and shirt it was so easy to just put on a jacket aswell for a more complete look. For this I highly recommend going with odd suits as full suits may seem too formal whereas Odd suits make for excellent daily and leisure wear. I've noticed that wearing suits without ties have become very common nowadays and seeing politicians and businessmen go for that look, makes it look rather sloppy and lazy, unlike when people did it back in the 60's and 80's since it was less common then. Because of that, I started wearing ties as a rebellion against the tieless-casual-suits worn by most people nowadays. Been a bit lazy recently, but putting on a tie does wonders. I noticed that people would talk to me more politely when I wore a tie, and you do indeed get looks from people but in a good way. I also started practicing wearing the clothes at home before I got used to wearing them in public, so I find the tips in this video very reletable. From personal experience, I can confirm that these tips are excellent. Good Video. Thank you. Ps: Haha, funny that your dad would ask you if you were going to wear your bowler hat to dinner because I have been thinking about buying one ;)

Love these videos you’re putting out. I recently discovered your channel. I will say that when starting off dressing formal, it’s important to only dress up to what makes you feel comfortable. It also will let friends get more familiar with them seeing you dress up. And as time goes on, sure, throw a sport coat on and wear that. Sometimes comments from others on how YOU are dressed, is really an insecurity because of how THEY are dressed. There’s so much one can say on this topic and I’m excited to see where you go in tackling all of these topics.

Agree a man can never be overdressed. Except if he wears a formal dress code (White and Black tie in the evening) or (Morning and Stroller in the day) when a dress code is not specified. However, a true gentleman is dressed for the occasion. E.g country vs city, hot vs cold climate, morning vs evening, sport vs everyday. Video idea?

I live and work in a mostly blue collar environment (SE Texas.) While you can't do heavy wool suits here too often, being squared away even in more casual clothes will often get you positive feedback. If you still want to wear your suits and ties like I do but can't do it as much at work, just treat yourself when you get home. I often change into a comfortable suit or jacket, a tie and kick back in the evening with a classic record. It's become a decompression ritual, like how some put on sweatpants as soon as they get in the door.

A gentleman should never feel uncomfortable around his inferiors or his equals. Dressing up to a level of good taste should instil confidence and not insecurity. Remember, it's not other chaps you dress for; we dress to live our best lives. If we happen to turn the eye of an attractive young person while looking smart, then so much the better!

For me there are 2 reasons I don’t dress up: First of even budget options are still quite high priced for someone who has almost nothing else than clothes from second hand stores. Secondly for now I work construction and soon I’ll work as a climbing arborist (if everything goes well). These clothes don’t really fit the job that I do and the job that I’m proud of doing, I don’t wanna walk around looking like I belong in an office while I am proud to do what I do. My ultimate dream job however is long haul pilot and then I will have a reason to dress up but as long as I do what I do now and I love doing, I’ll be wearing workwear, camouflage and from time to time flannel button ups. I do however plan on buying a pretty nice watch in the coming weeks (once I saved up enough), a Casio G-Shock GA-100CF-1A9ER but then again it’s not a watch for under a suit I think 😅

You don't have to dress up just for work. My career requires me to wear a uniform so I have clothing I have to wear on the job. However when I'm not at work, that's when the stylish clothes come out. For me other places where I wear more stylish clothing include church, running errands, out with my wife and kids, being with my friends, you name it. Just food for thought.

Get yourself a Casio MQ-24-1B3 (also white dial version) it only cost 10-20 Euros. Ofc not really waterresistent like a G Shock. But its really „timeless“ even its made out of plastic, from the aesthetic you can wear it with ANYTHING and it will never downgrade your style or scream for attention.

Talk about standing out - I wear a nice polo shirt and linen trousers to the gym. It's almost a complete outfit - with different shoes and a nice watch, I'd fit in at a classy but casual barbecue - yet it breathes and gives me freedom of movement. It's different from what everyone else wears, with their overly revealing outfits made from synthetic fibres. As you say, dressing this way earns attention. I'd never stand out at a gym for my performance or physique, but my outfit looks effortlessly elegant in a context where elegance is in short supply. As a bonus, I don't need to own "gym clothes" - just normal clothes I wear to the gym.

Another good video with sound advice. However, in your introduction you say you should dress however, whenever you like. I would say that is precisely the problem we have today. Too many men of all ages feel they can dress however and whenever they like. I know you didn't mean this literally, but the relentless drive to do whatever you like is probably a significant reason why men are such a mess today. The well dressed man must have a genuine vision of how he wants to be perceived. Your suggestion to pay attention to men who inspire you is a great starting point.
