All of this is SO true. I was a self-taught drummer who played in a couple of simple bands when I started out. They were just jam bands, but I learned some basics. Then I got into a cover band that planned to actually play gigs. I learned VERY quickly that if I wanted to keep my seat I need to learn how to learn the songs and fast..! I used to practice the songs for 4-6 hours a day then do 2 practices with the band a week. Years later, a musician friend of mine was playing with me in another band and he looked at me and said "you know, I came to see you in one of your first shows with your first club band and you were not very good." I was like, thanks for nothing pal... LOL..! He replied, "no I mean it, you weren't good at all, but, I came and saw you again 6 months later and I couldn't believe how good you were." It was the nicest compliment anyone ever gave me. Earnest practice really does pay off. I got to perform in live bands for over 20 years due to the work I was always willing to do to learn whatever I needed to learn.

That sounds like completely honest and valuable feedback with no agenda. Very valuable and rare.
