Anyone saying my example is wrong is missing the point of the video. The example is correct, an evf will not help you in this case know your shutter speed should start off slower. The reason I made this video is because so many people flat out said they can get all shots in one shot because they have an evf. Well, if they didn't understand shutter speed and cause and effect and only knew to look for what looks right in the evf, they wouldn't get the hand blur. The point is to help people see how you build an exposure for any situation no matter what camera you use. In this case, helping people understand a starting point for a scenario like this.

Jared Polin, I have a PSA to your viewers that know how to expose properly in one shot and have a problem with how you are presenting the "3 Shots Or Less" videos. PSA to "Pros": Your skills will remain the same if you skip the "3 Shots Or Less" videos going forward. If you know how to expose in one shot you are allowed to move on with out commenting; feel free to leave the comments section available for those that find the videos beneficial. Have a great day! Jared, thank you for all the free content you and your team put out.

Magallon You're right! But, and I'm just assuming here, some people might want more "advanced" tutorials perhaps.

I agree. For those that do, I think they should just ask for more advance instructional videos. Just my 2 cents.

I love these videos. I actually pause the video after your first shot and try to figure out what exposure settings you will use to achieve the shot you want before you actually do it. I was close this time I figured you would leave the aperture alone and go to 1/60th and 1600 ISO but I was was wrong and you went one stop lower. Great way to make you think about the exposure triangle instead of letting the camera always decided even in aperture or shutter propriety modes.

Dear Fro, I'm absolutely getting what you're trying to teach. But in this case people are right, the example is wrong. EVF does tell you the proper exposure. If I know I want to capture motion blur, then I start out with a slow shutter speed in the first place, then adjust my settings to see the proper exposure in the EVF. Where EVF is not that helpful is when you're using flash, as the camera does not know how much light it will have to work with, that is where it gets tricky. :) Another interesting scenario would be getting the proper exposure right in backlighting. Where you'd set your camera differently if you'd like a shilouette or not. Or another one: Shooting raw of course! In case of a backlit scene, how much can you underexpose the face so that you can recover the shadows so that the sky in the background is not blown out. Depends on the camera of course, but it would be nice to have rules of thumb. Keep shooting raw!! Janos

+Janos Debreczi let me say yes I am still correct in what I said in the video. The point is people who are saying they can get things right in one shot because they have an evf are wrong. Why are they wrong, simple, they don't know that starting at a slower shutter speed would give them the effect I was going for. So yes, I am correct in what I said in the video.
@aaronoverstreet14368 жыл бұрын
Janos Debreczi In addition to Fro's reply Janos, I reckon he's trying to teach beginners how to make the image they want, blurred hands or whatever, how to compensate with a stop here and a stop there etc, and the outcomes/consequences for adjustments. It's not just about a nice exposure seen through the EVF, it's about how to portray movement, capture that bird in flight, shoot the band from the pit, separate the subject from the background, yaddayadda.. and later it'll be about how to bring down the ambient exposure and light the subject using hss drinking chardonnay in the vineyard!
@debreczi28 жыл бұрын
"Why are they wrong, simple, they don't know that starting at a slower shutter speed would give them the effect I was going for." - So you're generalizing that people who use EVFs do not know that they would have to use a slow shutter speed to give the blurry effect. I'm not sure I like that, but it must be me who misses the point. Anyway, I'll let this pass on, and continue watching the videos. :)

Turn on the live histogram. You could get to the blurred hands in 1 shot... assuming the image stabilization is as good as the Olympus. You can easily open up aperture and bump iso and drop shutter speed to 1/60 and have everything else sharp
@ObelixCMM8 жыл бұрын
Only image stabilization for stills is in the kit lens. What Canon calls "in body" is digital (crop) stabilization for video only.

Jared knows a 1/200 shutter is going to freeze the subject. And he knows just changing to a slower shutter is going to blow it out with the same ISO. I think the first shot should have been at the correct shutter to show the blur. Then he could have explained how to adjust the ISO or Aperture nail the exposure.
@RYSEproductions8 жыл бұрын
Chris Barr exactly. The camera even tells you the correct aperture if you've set shutter speed and iso
8 жыл бұрын
He could also have used the evf/metering/histogram to get the exposure right in the first shot. I guess this was good order to do it if he must use 3 shots.

Just a thought from the kind of a guy who this video was made for probably intended for. With much gratitude and respect to all the pros and enthusiasts in the room, as a novice (to be kind) that just wants to take a decent picture. I really like the “3 Shots Or Less” series. It’s nice to have some basics (that those with experience take for granted) explained in a way that isn’t so god damn boring you want to stick your head in an oven. And you can try it out as soon as you are done watching it. They have helped me.

But, that is just a side-note, since I do get why you made the episode and taught it the way you did.

There was no need for second shot in this series, you could see in EVF that you are overexposing.

If you followed the EVF in the 2nd shot, you would have gotten the correct exposure and blurry hands. In this situation there's no reason to be overexposed unless you are ignoring the camera on purpose.
@froknowsphoto8 жыл бұрын
It's called making a point. Just because you have an EVF doesn't mean you can ignore learning the exposure triangle. If you simply use the EVF and just turn dials, you're not learning. That's the point being made. I could have gotten the exposure in 1 shot for just about all of these situations and scenarios but how will that help people learn.
@tsellsseashells8 жыл бұрын
Jared Polin I get it. I just think you were being a little deceptive to prove a point. You ignored the exposure triangle in the second shot and some would argue the first bc you built your exposure around 6400 ISO instead of your shutter speed just to prove a point. I'm not trying to troll you I'm just saying this isn't the most realistic test.
@nevakee7168 жыл бұрын
in fact, you could directly get what you need, by starting at 1/20 then use the EVF.

Jared seems to be playing dumb :D I bet he would have gotten it right in the first shot if he had wanted to.
@froknowsphoto8 жыл бұрын
I would have gotten it fairly close and honestly with the EVF and me knowing where I want my shutter speed, all I would have needed to do is get the exposure right for the slower shutter speed. What some people seem not to grasp is if you don't know that a slower shutter speed will give you the result I was going for, the EVF will not help you.
8 жыл бұрын
And even if they knew that slower shutter speed would give motion blur, they might not have expertise to guess right amount of motion blur for the look they are after. I do have to make adjustments all the time while chasing "perfect" motion blur.
