Another great video Jared. I remember looking at a similar excellent short video on manual exposure you did a year or so ago, with the same principles. I'd never touched full manual mode before and had no idea it was that simple. Made such a big difference being able to encorporate it into my work and in understanding how photography works in a more technical way by getting out of auto. Thanks! :-)

My camera's meter seems to be off 90% of the time. I really like this series because I find myself tweaking the exposure triangle for at least 5-10 tries just to get it right. This are good references for me. Please do more!

Step 1: expose for the sun - step 2: import the picture in Lightroom and raise shadows +100000 - step 3: if the main subject is not well exposed, camera doesn't have enough dynamic range. Must upgrade.

I LOVE these videos! This one is definitely helpful since a couple years ago (when I wasn't as well versed) I went through hell photographing a dark subject with a naturally bright background. Kept relying on the camera's meter and my subject was always dark. And also, this is the best thing Todd has done because he isn't talking. I wish I could listen to the podcasts but he is NOT funny nor entertaining and quite frankly very annoying to listen to at times. But at least I can still watch these and all other Jared polin videos!

Is it better to overexpose your subject or underexpose? looking for a way to get most details back ... bec i had one photo underexposed and when i bumped up the exposure in Lightroom, lots of dark part get greenish ( not naturel ) and it's not pretty, so Overexposing is better then?

Jared, I think the meter on the D3300 was set to matrix- or center-weighted metering, correct? Would the camera have done a better job metering for Todd's face when it would've been set on spot metering? Not trying to undermine the essential skill of estimating the correct exposure settings without totally relying on the meter, though...

I don't have a Nikon. I have a Canon 7D, and when I am faced with that problem, I place myself in a shadow and set my camera to spot metering. This way the camera is only looking at my subject in order to get the correct exposure. 95% of the time, I get the same results you just got.

i been trying to take a photo of the star sky and star trails but im not able to get the settings right i been trying for nights and i was hoping if you can do a video about this and by using entry level and pro level cameras thanks
@speedypickup
@speedypickup 8 жыл бұрын
For night sky photos, use setting something like: Shutter speed - 30 seconds; ISO 800, F-5.6; Try to focus your camera on the farthest object that you possibly can and then use this setting when setting up the camera to take a picture of the night sky - this will help to make the stars look less "blurry" when you take these pictures. Use either a remote switch or a timer switch of 2-seconds to eliminate camera movement when taking the picture.For taking star trail pictures, you simply need to reduce your ISO to like 200 or 400 and set your shutter speed to Base mode, which essentially means the shutter will stay open for as long as you press and hold the shutter button. Again, remote would be very helpful for this. Hold the shutter open for about 15 minutes and see what you think!

Funny, we were having this discussion on the FroKnowsPhoto Facebook group the other day and people were adamant that the metering mode was more than figuring out the perfect exposure. I countered that if you have the right exposure in manual mode, the metering mode doesn't matter. I was told I wasn't a real photographer.

Yeah, Jared had a pretty lame video trying to imply that wasn't the case but he had to introduce movement. The thing is after the first one was blurry he suddenly knew that he had to cut his shutter speed down greatly. He already knew that of course and could have gotten it right the first time on mirrorless.
