Katmai National Park and Preserve is not accessible by roads but is one of the coolest National Parks we’ve ever had the pleasure of visiting. When we went to plan our trip we often found it hard to sort out all the different options for getting to the remote National Park. In this video we dive into how to get to Katmai National Park by plane, ferry, as well as how to stay in the park, food accommodations and additional things that you can do to make the most of your stay in this remarkable park. Things like bus tours of the Valley of 10,000 Smokes and flight seeing tours.

You can get to Brooks Camp for a fraction of the price noted here, if you just fly commercial to King Salmon, and take a boat upriver on the Naknek to Brooks Lake, and the park. Just look at a map !

Great video!! I went to Brooks camp last August and it is absolutely worth the time, effort and money. The only thing I'll add is to be mindful when you book your travel as to your arrival and departure times. I meet a lady there who took a float plan in and out - she had less then 24 hours in Brooks Camp because she got in mid afternoon and left early afternoon the following day. We choose to stay in King Salmon the night before (so we could take the earliest water taxi to Brooks Camp) and the night after (so we could take the last water taxi back to King Salmon). The best times to view bears at Brooks Falls is earlier in the morning before the float planes and water taxis arrive, and early evening after they've left.

Glad we could add a bit of insight on other methods for getting to beautiful Katmai! If you’re already planning to be in Homer, I couldn’t recommend using Stellar Air Service enough. The pilot is so nice, responsive, and will work with you and your schedule. Reach out to us if you have more questions. We’re happy to help! ☺️

As someone who grew up on Kodiak from the mid-70s to the late 80s, I recommend taking a trip to the island. Go in spring or summer, the winters can be very wet and nasty. If you are up too it, take a day climb up barometer mountain. I grew up at the foot of that mountain at an old Coast Guard housing area, Nimitz Park. The island will not disappoint.

From the AKN terminal, walk down to Eddies Fireplace Inn (EFI) get a beer, and ask for Big Mike. He will hook you up with Bubba, in the Purple People Eater skiff for a run up to Brooks. 👍

From the AKN airport terminal, walk down toward the City Market (now the AK Commercial) and to the right is Eddies Fireplace Inn. Go in there, order a beer, and ask for Big Mike. He will hook you up with Bubba, in the Purple People Eater skiff for a most memorable journey up to Brooks. (If you don’t mind the weed smoke)

As a longtime Alaskan , I had to laugh, how to get to Katmai. Your vid should have been, “how to get to most of Alaska “ by small plane , or boat! So!😳😉👍🤪
@TheHonyak

Wow! As an 18 year resident of King Salmon, why don’t you just fly there on a commercial airline and then rent a skiff (boat) to run up the 18 miles of the Naknek river to Brooks lake, and into Brooks Camp for a tiny fraction of the prices you’re talking about??

Camping in the campground is 50% capacity for this summer and was fully booked as of Jan 6th 2022. We are planning to camp outside of the electric fence. Any advice on this situation? We’re there any campers in this situation and outside of the fence when you were there?
@charliecoy8965

To be more specific all camping in the brooks campground is fully booked for the ENTIRE SUMMER. There is no availability.
@BoundForNowhere
@BoundForNowhere 2 жыл бұрын
So we considered staying out of the fence for that additional night we were going to stay. Sounds like people do it often, and the park ranger even said the ground cover was more comfortable in the area closer to the falls they recommend people to camp in. I'd day leave all your food and such in the caches and walk back into Brooks Camp anytime you are needing to deal with food. They said you can rent bear cans from the park office for free, but they also recommend airing on the safe side and just returning to Brooks Camp to make food and eat. Otherwise they say they never have issues with people camping outside the fence.
