Too Long Didn't Watch? Step 1, soak your seeds. Soak them for 24 hours, rinsing every 8. Step 2, drain the seeds and let them germinate. Rinse them once a day. Step 3, green them up by removing the lid and placing them in a sunny window sill. They green and grow fast at this point. Eat once they are big enough, refrigerate and use for up to 5 days. Thank you The Ripe Tomato Farms for the video. I started growing my very first alfalfa sprouts. Quick question if I may: how much water do the alfalfa seeds / sprouts need in step 3? I've started watering the alfalfa and they seem to like water a lot judging by the rapid growth that followed. Thank you again.
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms 4 жыл бұрын
@@ovidiu24mtv that's great! As for water, after the initial 24 hour soaking period, you don't actually keep the seeds in water. If you do, they will ferment and rot. Simply wash (and rinse!) the seeds after the 24 hour soaking period once a day until you eat them. Do NOT soak the sprouted seeds in water! Happy sprouting!

Thank you! This method worked so much better than what I was doing before. I didn't know that tipping the jar to drain and using a sprouting lid, was totally unnecessary (in fact, that was just making the moisture leave the sprouts too fast). I just let the sprouts grow in the jar upright, and I put the lid on top of the jar without screwing it, so it kept the moisture in but didn't suffocate the sprouts. Then after 2 days I put the same jar on the window sill to "green up." 2 tbsp of seeds grew to 2/3 of a 1L mason jar! Sweet!

Can’t wait for those sprouting videos!! So, could I do this with wheat grass seeds in a 10-20 tray with a done? I got the seed to start some kind of fast turn over greens 🥬 forr my chickens during the winter time til I can grow for them outdoors. The greens increase the nutrition in the eggs and make it a beautiful orange-gold instead on the anemic pale yellow eggs from the store. So I am working on having greens for them during the off growing times til I can get my indoor growing area going. 😊
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms 4 жыл бұрын
Wheatgrass needs to be treated as a microgreen. So, basically the same.... The same steps for soaking and the first 24 hours... Identical. However, where sprouts are left on the container to sprout, wheatgrass and microgreens are placed on a thin 1-2 layer of soil to continue to grow. They are then harvested by cutting them down 10-14 days later! Super easy, and quite rewarding!
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms 4 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah, microgreens (peas, radish, sunflower etc) are so amazing for chickens and super charging their eggs! Right on that you're doing that. You could grow large 10x20 mats of these greens and just let the hens go wild on them!!

Hey Kara, the great thing is, it doesn't matter. You are literally submerging the seeds for 24 hours and then rinsing/draining fully. So you can submerge them to just over the top of the seeds or you can submerge them in a swimming pool amount of water...it makes no difference!

@TheRipeTomatoFarms

Hey Nancy. With Alfalfa Sprouts, you don't. They are simply part of the final product that you eat, unlike mung beans. Cheers.

When the sprouts attained the desired length and you like to eat, you just wash them by frequently dipping into water and removing from the water. After each of such dipping for delicate washing you will notice that some of the undesirable skin left in the bottom of the Bowl. Don't try to remove all because you may damage the sprouts. But after this excercise you may succeed in getting rid of most of the unwanted skins.

Would like to hear more on important safety guidelines for growing sprouts. As you know food poisoning is common w store bought sprouts. 1) Is this the case with home grown and how do we avoid our sprouts becoming a breeding ground for bacteria. 2) How long is too long before refrigeration? 3) How warm is too warm in regards to food safety(while growing)? 4) Safe handling guidelines. 5) Safe storage guidelines. Saw another guy on YT who does larger batches of broccoli sprouts then bags and freezes them. Otherwise enjoyed the informative video. Keep up the good work. www.nhs.uk/live-well/eat-well/sprouted-seeds-safety-advice/

A little confusing, you didn't say when you transferred into new container, then you said final rinse and said rinse again. Think I get it though.
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms 4 жыл бұрын
You don't need to transfer it to a new container. I had both the glass and the plastic containers growing concurrently and used the plastic one because we had been snacking on the glass one and it was almost gone! I only transferred the plastic one to the clamshell because I couldn't get the lid on. But it never needs to be transferred if you don't want to.

"Step 2, drain the seeds and let them germinate. Rinse them once a day." 1.What does germinate mean, what does that look like? Do they go black? fluffy? I have no idea. And "rinse them once a day" for how many days?? 2? 56? So confusing.

Even black Gram and Lentils. Though they take two days longer sprouting, and you will require to Submerge the seeds in water (for fifteen minutes each) after the gap of eight hours until sprouting is clearly visible.
