I love this video! Our first amaranth flour came in today and I was trying to see how to make bread, then went on to see what things that would appeal to us that we could do with the grain if we plant amaranth next season. Then I saw this and now I plant to do some of this, too. My husband and I used to love putting sprouts on salads and sandwiches and we've talked about growing microgreens but haven't yet. I'm ready to do this. Thank you for your videos!

Amaranth is so easy to grow and it grows so fast. I grow it using half composted tree leaves or grass clippings covered by crushed straws. It normally will germinate within 3 to 4 days in June/July outdoor. There is no need to grow it as a microgreen.

I'm growing 'regular' Amaranth. What is the difference between those and the micro ones? Aren't they the same seeds? How can I grow them micro instead of the regular sized ones- not that I don't like the bigger ones... they are stunning.
@ImusNoxa
@ImusNoxa 2 жыл бұрын
@@subtitledEN the only difference is when you harvest. Micro greens simply refers to flora that are in a growth stage between sprouts and "baby" plants, usually grown for about a week but before they start to develop true leaves.

considering how large the plants actually get I don't think you'll get them to seed in such small space. You can grow a full sized one in a pot and get enough seeds from it to microgreen for quite awhile I would suspect. The flowers are quite the seed producing machines.

It will re-seed some independently if you let the plant go to seed and dry up. If you harvest the "top flowers" , whinnow them down to black seed then keep them in a cool dry place..great on salads or cooked. Similar to quinoe seeds. Leaves are eatible as well throughout growing season.

I would like to know how to remove the seed husks?I apply hydroponic. They grow much slower and have seed husk issues...
@raevynmikhail5481
@raevynmikhail5481 3 жыл бұрын
Winnow them. Take the seed heads of the plants off at about 4", leaving some of the leafy stalks. Hang them up side down to dry. Place dried seed heads in a pillow case and beat it against a hard surface to thrash the seeds and husks from the plant. Remove stalks and pour seeds and husks on a flat surface. Blow a fan on low onto them to separate and blow away the husks. If you're just talking about removing the initial seed husks from the micro greens, just blow them off... but they shouldn't stay on for long anyway.

@raevynmikhail5481
@raevynmikhail5481 3 жыл бұрын
Not usually... but there are a few differences. Seeds selected for planting are usually picked through for quality to yield a higher germination rate. Those for eating are not selective, so you may have a lower germination rate. Some seed distributors spray their seeds with chemicals to help preserve them that are not great to eat. The website you posted doesn't seem to do that.

Can I use the grain from Bob's Red Mill . Will they sprout?
@epicgardening
@epicgardening 7 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I'm not sure. I haven't tried it - I'd give it a shot and see! I would imagine they would sprout.

Never heard of Bob's red Mill, but it probably wouldn't hurt to call and ask them if their seeds are treated with anything or processed in any way. If it's imported, depending on where you live, it might not be a good option as many imported things are treated (for legal reasons I think, but don't quote me)

Why did you use a Halogen light? I would have thought maybe a 75w hps or 100w led

Just for the purpose of the timelapse - I used sunlight for the actual growing :)

Hello. Some of my red amaranth grows red while others grow green. They dont turn red even they are in the same pot. Do have any advice?
@raevynmikhail5481
@raevynmikhail5481 3 жыл бұрын
This is just the genetics. Removing the green ones from the batch and only keeping the red through several generations will produce better results. If for microgreens, unfortunately this just comes down to the seed distributor.

Yes! Love this video, (all your videos really) and the easy, concise instructions. One question, once they've been harvested they do not grow back...or do they?

Question, do you need to have a license, permit or anything of that nature to grow and sell microgreens, or can you simply just grow and sell microgreens ? I live in Los Angeles California and I would love to get into this. Thanks

I'm not positive but I believe you would need to get/file for a fictisous buiessnes name and you resale license. I imagine that a couple other things would be needed
