I love this video! Our first amaranth flour came in today and I was trying to see how to make bread, then went on to see what things that would appeal to us that we could do with the grain if we plant amaranth next season. Then I saw this and now I plant to do some of this, too. My husband and I used to love putting sprouts on salads and sandwiches and we've talked about growing microgreens but haven't yet. I'm ready to do this. Thank you for your videos!

Amaranth is so easy to grow and it grows so fast. I grow it using half composted tree leaves or grass clippings covered by crushed straws. It normally will germinate within 3 to 4 days in June/July outdoor. There is no need to grow it as a microgreen.

I'm growing 'regular' Amaranth. What is the difference between those and the micro ones? Aren't they the same seeds? How can I grow them micro instead of the regular sized ones- not that I don't like the bigger ones... they are stunning.

@@subtitledEN the only difference is when you harvest. Micro greens simply refers to flora that are in a growth stage between sprouts and "baby" plants, usually grown for about a week but before they start to develop true leaves.

There are tons of different types of amaranth. The ones focused on here are good for microgreens but they would eventually grow to full size grain amaranth. If you're growing for grain/ leaves, they'd need to be spaced better.

@raevynmikhail54813 жыл бұрын
Winnow them. Take the seed heads of the plants off at about 4", leaving some of the leafy stalks. Hang them up side down to dry. Place dried seed heads in a pillow case and beat it against a hard surface to thrash the seeds and husks from the plant. Remove stalks and pour seeds and husks on a flat surface. Blow a fan on low onto them to separate and blow away the husks. If you're just talking about removing the initial seed husks from the micro greens, just blow them off... but they shouldn't stay on for long anyway.

@raevynmikhail54813 жыл бұрын
Not usually... but there are a few differences. Seeds selected for planting are usually picked through for quality to yield a higher germination rate. Those for eating are not selective, so you may have a lower germination rate. Some seed distributors spray their seeds with chemicals to help preserve them that are not great to eat. The website you posted doesn't seem to do that.
