Do you need soil or can you just use a lava rock substrate. Aquatic moss doesn’t have roots, so not sure if soil is necessary?

I have an aquascape bonsai made after a Japanese painting by myself with ada substrate sitting as a decorative piece and now I m thinking of adding lava rocks and or small fine gravel and sand and add Christmas moss on it and seal it and switch the light on low light and let it be … will it work to carpet my tank? adding green colour to my design?

Hey, I’m making wet terrariums, what moss would you recommend for the layer about the pebbles at the bottom? I’m using the moss for water retention and just can’t find anything about the best moss to use🥲 I’m looking at sphagnum moss at the moment :)

On top of your drainage like a mesh layer? If so, I wouldnt recommend it (unless it's a large terrarium) because mosses soak up a LOT of water like a sponge and it can make the bottom of the soil be too wet for roots. It also naturally breaks down, so its not a long term solution of a "mesh layer". You could either not use it completely (barriers between drainage and substrate arent really necessary), or use something artificial like window screen mesh.

As long as you don't over water, sphagnum moss seems to be the best as far as mosses go for water retention. It's what everyone uses when growing in boggy type set ups for their carnivorous plants. Though, you'll still want to have a drainage layer if it's going to be in a terrarium, as without any drainage, water can go stagnant and build up anaerobic bacteria and can deplete the oxygen surrounding plants roots, making them rot. The key is to get the right balance of moisture while not drenching the substrate. Unless you are making a bog, then you'll want some drainage. Tbh, even with a bog style set up, you'd want some sort of drainage layer with rock at least, with a pipe leading down to the bottom to soak up any excess water or to switch out the stagnant, possibly smelly water.
