I started with a golf ball sized amount and now have a 5 gallon tote full. All I did was added in tap water under high light sitting at 80°F. Didn't take long at all for it to explode in growth.

Hi, I'm a bit late here but what you're doing is called 'photoautotrophic tissue culture', which means it lacks sugar and is instead photosynthesis-dependent. For this to work you need CO2, the moss will not grow at all if the caps on the cups are closed and even with the caps open some way to boost CO2 is recommended.
@AquariumPlantLab3 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for your comment! I am not familiar with photoautotrophic tissue cultures so I will definitely be looking into that. While unfamiliar with the term, shortly after planting it did hit me that these cups would likely be limited by co2, and sure enough, they definitely were. They did actuakly grow but nowhere near what I had expected. My plan for the update video is to cover this oversight add a few more mls of solution and poke some holes in the lids. Then give the cups more time to see if there is any noticeable difference. I will give you a shout for this constructive comment, thanks!!! 😊

Did you consider using a lower than suggested nutrient density? I feel like moss doesn't need much in the way of nutrients.

Interesting. When you do experiments like this you need to add a control batch. You had 5x7 so the 3 you did plus 1x7 with RO water and maybe 1x7 with tap water would give a better chance of more definitive results.

I think over time you can achieve no snail cultures, in that if cut and transplant the newest and upper most growth into cultures and grow them out a few times, you should in theory have eliminated most of the snails.
@AquariumPlantLab3 жыл бұрын
I think so! Ive been selecting out the ones with snails. I am going to try a mild bleach dip with those infected cups, then grow and see if that fixes the issue. What you described would probably work too!

Hello, I am following you from the Middle East. I wanted to ask you about the experience of moss. Is the fertilizer you put on a fertilizer for terrestrial plants? Because we only have NPK 20 20 20 available, I am afraid of using it and I do not know how to reduce it to the appropriate amount. After the plants grew up, did I encounter a problem in dropping them into aquariums with fish?
@craighodgson4060 Жыл бұрын
Hello from England, yeah NPK 20 20 20 IS GOOD TO USE YOU JUST GOT TO MAKE SURE TDS READINGS ARE AROUND 500+ DON'T GO ABOVE 600. IF IT CONTAINS COPPER RINSE IT OF WITH FRESH WATER BECAUSE IT WILL KILL SNAILS AND SHRIMPS

Great question! Not as much growth as I would have liked to see, however, the Moss was previously grown underwater so it had to transition to emersed form. This probably took a week or two. Now I’m getting pretty strong growth. Might need to add a little more solution. I’ll do an update video soon!

It’s what I had available here locally back when I was first looking. I am actually in the process of experimenting with a formula that is 9-3-6, which may work better given the higher nitrogen content. Time will tell!
