Just bought a beautiful 1 gallon basil from Lowes. I boiled water, put some in a plastic pot saucer so it can drink from below. It works!!!! One thing love about basil is , evrytime you pinch remove leaves it grows back double . My basil plants are now 12 inch in diameter and 15 inch high , all from little seed , I add it to my sandwiches and pasta all the time fresh . love it

Glad to hear it. Yes they have holes. Every pot should have holes for drainage. It doesn't have to be same exact pot trays, you can use any small pots like 2" or 3" to separate the seedlings. It is hard to tell without seeing. If the weather is cold, that is completely normal. Seedlings grow slowly when it is cold. If the seedlings look healthy, get adequate light and don't show signs of wilting, then you just need to keep them warm at above 65F (18C). Also once you see first pair of true leaves (not the tiny ones), feed them with diluted (1/2 of suggested dose) fish fertilizer, or a general purpose water soluble fertilizer. Please note that the timeline in the video is just for reference and can differ for different conditions. I am guessing you just need to be patient. Happy growing and thank you for visiting!

Not a big difference between a tray and container bin. But if you mean individual plugs, that's because Basils have tiny seeds and it is easier to sprinkle seeds rather than sowing couple of seeds in each plug. I do this so I can choose strong seedlings to be pricked out. This also gives me the opportunity to make the soil rich for seedlings to grow better. Yes, you can bring them inside if you can provide ample light for them. But in my experience, usually basils grown to the next year will start producing smaller leaves and not as tender leaves and the first year, so it is better to start new seeds for next spring. Basically you want to keep seed soil moist but not soggy. For the light, 4-6 hours of early morning sunlight is the best. or you can place them in a part sun/part shade location, but avoid exposing them to hot midday sun. The plastic cover is to help keep soil moist. If you manage to check yourself and keep soil constantly moist, plastic cover is not needed (I never use it). And the mature basils will do best if you keep them watered. Do not let top soil to dry out. I normally water them every other day and if hot, daily. Sure you can. I am showing what I found works best for growing them in my experience but sure there can be many ways to gardening. Some seeds struggle to germinate in potting soil due to fungal or mold problems. Also you may want to separate the seedlings if you plant them to close to each other. The first time I grew Basil indoors, I planted a single seed in each pot. After watching your video, my reaction was that this wasn't a good idea. I'm about to start growing it again this year, but this time, I'm just gonna try throwing a bunch of seeds on the surface of a container of potting soil and then thin them out appropriately. Until seeds germinate, I keep them in a shed like room in my backyard (at about room temperature). As soon as they pop up, seedlings are moved to a sheltered part sun location (3-4 hours of early morning sunlight). On very sunny days, I provide some shade (like patio umbrella). I usually don't use grow lights for my seedings, only if it is cloudy for few days and not enough sunlight. So delighted to hear you love my videos and thank you very much for your comment!😊

Nice video. I've sown basil from harvested seeds before on a wet paper, and then planted them in soil. I'll do it in a mix as you suggested this time around. Could you inform what the advantage is to transplant the seedlings into a plug, and to then move the plug to the final pot, rather than moving the seedlings straight to the pot? Thanks!

The seedlings aren't that strong to be potted straight into a rich potting mix. I also found that tiny seedlings are more prone to disease specially damping off, if they haven't developed strong root system. You can put them in morning sunlight ~6hrs, and if it is too cold (below 50F), bring them inside at nights. Once it is time to prick them out or potting on, you can plant them a bit deeper and cover part of the leggy stem. After that, wait few weeks until they have developed leaves and then cut the tip off so they grow bushy. While you are waiting, I suggest to start a new batch and this time as soon as they pop up put them in filtered sunlight or 4-6 hrs of early morning sunlight. hope this helps and good luck!

So glad to hear it! I am sure you can do this! For watering, the best is to keep moist, but not soggy. You can skip watering is the top soil is wet. In hot wethers, water daily. Perlite can be replaced by vermiculite. You can also use gardening grit but that will make pots heavier. All garden centers carry bagged manure. You can definitely start seeds indoors. If the night temperature stays above 40-45°F, you can take them outside for a morning sunlight. IF decided to keep indoor, make sure to provide good light source. And when nights are too cold, bring seedling inside at nights. Once seedlings are large enough to handle and weather is above 50°F both day and night, transplant outdoors. Hope this helps and thank you for visiting!

Hi, new gardener here. I’m being told to harden off my basil. I noticed you didn’t do that and they are thriving. I live in SoCal so the sun is harsher than it appears in this video. Did you harden off? If not, how come? Thanks in advance!

Hi. I am in SoCal too and usually with our mild winters you can skip hardening off your plants. You can start indoors, but as soon as seedlings emerge, bring them outdoor for a 4-6 hours of early morning sunlight. If too hot in midday sun, keep them in part shade. If night temperature drop below 40F, which rarely happens in SoCal, bring them inside at nights. Otherwise by keeping them outdoor, they will get used to outdoor conditions and grow well. Basil grow perfectly in cool weathers, don't wait until hot summers to grow them. Hope this helps and thank you so much for getting in touch. Happy growing!

Plant basil outdoors only after nighttime temperatures stay above 50°F (10°C). You may start seeds indoor 2-3 weeks before transplanting outside. Basils usually thrive in hot weathers, but they will start flowering quickly if it gets too hot, just remember to keep flower buds pinched off to extend harvesting and feed regularly to promote new growth. Also you can keep them in shade in extreme midday heat. Cold does more harm than heat to basils.Thanks for visiting.

Even if you only want the plant for decoration, it is a good idea to pick leaves so the plants grow more greens and don't go to flowering. If not effected by disease and if temperature doesn't drop to freezing, you can enjoy them pretty much all year long. Happy growing and thanks for visiting.

I suggest to wait and see how many of them germinate. If they germinate too close to each other and you will not need that many plants, just remove few so other have room to grow. And if you want to keep them, try to prick them out while they are young. Hope this helps and thank you for visiting.

Hi! So glad you found the video informative. Soaking seeds is usually for seeds with hard shells to reduce germination time. Basil seeds are not that hard to germinate and soaking is not necessary. Thank you for your help, I tried to grow them in the coco peat but they didn't germinate so I put them in a box with some tissues they did sprut but died after an inch of growth also tried to transfer a few in light soil but they did not survive anything you can help me out with would be appreciated where I live I dont get fresh basil so I am very dedicated to grow in my home garden. Herbs and leafy vegetables in general benefit from high nitrogen fertilizers. For water soluble ones, fish fertilizer (5-1-1) is a great choice. For granules, you can use Feather meal or Blood meal fertilizers (I have a list of these fertilizers on my amazon page www.amazon.com/shop/influencer-3dd9a3b6 you can check). Not sure what happened there, but unless you cut it back to the soil level, it shouldn't kill the plant. try to harvest to the top 2-3 leaves. Keep 4-5" of the stem for new growth. Hope this helps and thanks for visiting.

So glad you loved the video. If you are planting seedlings individually like I did in the video, you can have them 4-5 inches apart and they will do great. However, if you are planting 3-4 seedlings together, or you want to grow bushy varieties of basil, you may want to plant them more apart each other. Hi. For tiny seeds such as basil, I prefer to sprinkle seeds rather than sowing couple of seeds in each plug. This will also allow me to choose strong ones to be pricked out. Seed mixes usually don't contain any food for plants, so pricking out is also a good time to make the soil rich for seedlings to grow better. You certainly can sow seeds in any way that suits you. That works too. Keep in mind that basil need nitrogen rich soil, so you will need to feeding with water soluble fertilizers once plant grow big. Happy growing!
