Okay well from experience when you say tapped into a pole or wall to get larger leaf size, I believe the idea behind this is to have nutrients available to those aerial roots. And how you do that essentially is you have to have moss and soil combined within that pole . The soil combined with the moss keeps it from essentially drying out and of course nutrients are applied up top down in through the moss in order to keep it hydrated etc. You will want to feed those aerial roots essentially.

I have a Monstera deliciosa albo-variegata planted on soil (Jundiai, SP, Brazil). It is 20-30 years old and its leaves are 60 cm long. Like yours, it is climbing a wall, but a garden wall. This season it produced 9 fruits.

So I’m confused, are they growing larger leaves due to water / nutrients ie moss pole OR even if climbing up a regular wall ( as in wall can’t give nutrient’s ) so when you say “ tapped” into a wall, do you just mean up against a wall?
@prettyingreen
@prettyingreen Жыл бұрын
To grow larger leaves, the aerial roots need to root into a medium; such as drywall, moss, Aroid mix, bark, tree bark, etc… once they tap in, and grow against gravity, the leaves will get larger! Hope this helps 😄
@variegated_stingray
@variegated_stingray Жыл бұрын
They just need something solid to climb up. The plant itself knows ecactly if it's a good pole. Thats why a bamboo stick won't work, because it can't attach itself properly to it. And thats what the plant wants to get bigger: it wants to know that it can attach itself to something and feels secure. Because if the plant isn't secure, it'll risk snapping from the weight of larger leaves. Hope that makes sense. So no, it's not down to water/nutrients in the pole - but they certainly help too. I've seen plenty of people (and did it myself with multiple albos) grow albos from tiny cutting to huge plants (24-26¨ leaves) without moss, but a good enough pole where the roots can attach themselves well. It's much nicer with a good moss pole - because then you can always cut the head cutting off when it grew too tall and have it already be quite well rooted inside the moss.

It’s soo interesting! Thanks for sharing. I am just wondering what kind of nutrients the Monstera can get from a drywall? Instinctively, I would have thought it bad for them being construction materials. I assumed your drywall is not painted as there would be too much chemicals for them? Thanks
@prettyingreen
@prettyingreen Жыл бұрын
I kinda misspoke-especially when it comes to nutrition from the drywall. There’s not much in gypsum I don’t think 🤔 but from a tree they can tap into the exterior bark and actually drink and eat from the Phloem layer under the bark!

Early fenestration is NOT a sign of a large form Albo. From the video I'm pretty sure it's a small form Albo.

Really? Early inner fenestrations are NOT signs of a deliciosa form Albo!? Would you explain for us
@thecyclingphotographer441
@thecyclingphotographer441 Жыл бұрын
@@prettyingreen getting fenestrations early in an Albo just means the plant is getting the perfect treatment and conditions. The difference between large and small forms are very distinct. Large from would have a stem similar to a Thai constellation where the nodes are really close together. Also the leaf will ruffle at the end with the steam. Large for altos resemble all the traits of a Thai Constellation so it will be a crawler instead of a leggy climber.

Mate, this is NOT a large form albo. The "large form" is the same form the Thai Constellation is. This albo is a "small form", what people also often call a "borsigiana". The large form doesn't have secondary fenestration at such small size, has much rounder leaves, thicker leaves and a very strong geniculum (which the small form also gets, but only when very mature and it's a lot weaker too).
@jaybtw6897
@jaybtw6897 7 ай бұрын
From what I've encountered- large form can get the perforations at smaller sizes. It's come down to lighting and size of the node it's growing off, in my experience at least.

Correct. Inner fenestrations alone are not indicative of Large Form. But inner PLUS winged geniculum = Large form
@variegated_stingray
