I've been planting potatoes for about 38 yrs. Back in the 20s my grandpa taught my mom who taught us to plant potatoes with straw I plant potatoes all year long here in the Arizona desert always a month apart I use a full potatoes when lazy other wise I cut them up as long as they have eyes there planted I don't always chit my potatoes there never been much of a difference. I really do enjoy your videos I think there very informative to those who are just learning I get many calls with people asking what they can plant on this month or that month how to plan it how to water it after I found your site I give him your KZbin channel and tell him it's a great source it keeps me from being tied up

I've been trying my hand at potatoes with not great results...this year I'm trying the cardboard box method...I put down 5-6 inches of soil, planted, covered...they sprung up nicely and now we're putting some peat moss down to cover the lower plant....but I might need to use some pine needles for the rest of them.....wish me luck...

Hi Angela and all followers, very helpful video, as usual. I learn so much from you. I live in a hot climate like yours so I take your advice seriously. I live in sub-tropical central Louisiana and it is HUMID here; far from dry. Back in April, right after Good Friday before Easter, I planted Beauregard Sweet Pots (my uncle very successfully farmed those sweet pots when I was a young child - now I'm 80 yrs. I planted several in a large potato grow bag from Gardeners Supply Co. They're happy as can be. I twirled the vines inside the container until it became too full. Today, I set up a 4 pole teepee (w tall thick tree branches) around the container and wrapped jute twine around the teepee. Gently pulled the vines out of the container and affixed them onto the teepee. It all adds NATURAL aesthetics to my whole front yard of Edible Farmscaping. I'm outside in my garden every day. I live on a busy street in my small town and people are always stopping to compliment the garden.......... who says we must have only landscape shrubs for a lovely front yard LOL.......

I have an area in my garden with weeds. I'm going to lie down large pieces of cardboard, pop drainage holes in used feed sacks, pitch a couple of shovels of good garden dirt in , 2 or 3 seed potato chits and a couple of loose handfuls of old hay my cows didn't eat . Keep them watered and in about 3weeks when they pop up, I'll cover them with more loose hay. I'll also take fish heads and left over fish bone scrap and cover with water and a lid in a 5 gallon bucket. Let it sit for 3or4 days and strain. That water I keep stored in the bucket and it's my concentrated bone/ blood meal fertilizer for the taters. I will also sprinkle some ashes from a wood fire around tater plants and chop a banana peel and throw in the bag when the plants are babies, and again later in the growing season. I'll continue to keep my tater plants covered with loose hay and watered about an inch per week. Hoping to get at least 1/2 a bushel per 50# feed sack.

Cool video! I love learning new ways of growing fruits and veggies! I live near Sedona, Az, high desert. I am currently growing russets in a planter(they are my best plants in my garden right now) and I am growing several different varieties of potatoes in a potato tower I made with mulched alfalfa and goat manure. I imagine my nitrogen levels are pretty high because of the alfalfa hay and goat manure, but I can't wait to see what I yield, come harvest time.

Hi again Angela, I was just reviewing this video again. I am container gardening in most areas of my yard so I don't have the need for a gardening grid. However, I am using what was an herb bed bordered with old bricks. I'm widening that space w cardboard for a no-dig addition (per Charles Dowding :) and will mulch with wheat straw. Could you please explain how to use sticks to keep the straw in place? Tks a bunch :)

Criss-crossing the sticks on top of the straw should help hold it in place.

Great video. I just got two yards of your raised bed mix at AZWF. I’m planning on trying potatoes very soon here. Why can’t you (or why don’t you) use any old organic potato from a grocery store? Can’t any potato become a seed potato? That’s what I’ve heard. I’ve never tried, but that’s the plan I’m going with.

You can use them, but they may have some diseases - so best practice is to use certified disease free seed potatoes.
