I got this tomato wire mesh at my local garden center. The brand is "Western fencing" and is distributed by BMD. Here is the link and you can contact them to see if they have it available in a store near your area www.bmdusa.com/western-fencing/ . If you cannot find it, you may use regular 2x4 wire mesh, or cut the 2x4 mesh to make it 4x4. I hope this helps and thank you for visiting!

Hi. I am located in SE Michigan and just purchased these seeds. This will be the first fruiting plant I attempt to grow from seed. I was originally considering planting the seed directly into the garden bed, but I'd also like to consider starting the seeds like you have done here. If I use your method of starting in small plastic pots, do you recommend I start at the same time that I would have if I planted the seeds directly outside in the garden bed? I was going to plant them Memorial Day weekend. Beautiful video by the way!
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 10 ай бұрын
Hi. For pumpkins, starting seeds would be same for in ground and in small pots. The reason is that you don't need to start them indoors early. And usually May. - Jun. is prefect time to start seeds. You got it right, Memorial Day or 4th of July are two holidays that is told to remember for sowing pumpkins. Happy growing and thank you so much for your comment!

I noticed there were no cotyledons on any of the plants you transferred. Did you remove them? Mine always start to not look so great by 30 days or so and I'm always hesitant whether to remove them or not since it's so close to the soil. Also, I've seen just about every pumpkin growing video there is on KZbin and this is by far the best video out there!!!! Nothing comes close! So glad you did a new video. Very informative and love that you included everything from start to finish that someone would need to know! So so helpful! Especially the trellis!
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 3 жыл бұрын
Interesting question. I usually leave them on the seedlings and often remove them at the time of transplanting. I do this not purposely and it is like a habit. They do help seedlings to grow better but I don't think it will make any difference if you want to keep them when planting. My intention is to keep the videos as simple as possible, and leave these kind of detail to gardeners to decide what works for them best. Nice thing about having multiple seedlings is that you can do experiments to grow them differently and plant only the healthiest ones. I really appreciate you feedback and am delighted that you love my videos. Cheers and Happy gardening!😊

Delighted for your comment! Pumpkins perform best when fruits set and ripen all together. Although you might notice continues new fruits, it is best to remove new ones once the old fruits are about to mature. This will help the plant to focus its energy on a flavored fruit production (quality instead of quantity). Pumpkins need and enjoy full sun. I live in California too and my pumpkin plants have survived 100F+ temperature. If it is over 100F, you just need to provide some shade (umbrella) and make sure they are well watered, specially if you grow them in fabric pots. I hope this helps and thank you so much for getting in touch!😊

Awesome video! can you plant more than one jack be little per 10 gallon grow bag?
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 2 жыл бұрын
Great question. The main thing to keep in mind with grow bags is the air pruning of the roots. Air pruning doesn't let roots to be developed up to the walls of the bags and you don't get the full capacity of it. When you grow two plants, then you need to plant them closer to the walls and not in the center, as you do with a single plant. This will lower success rates in building strong roots resulting in limited plant growth and fruit production. Technically, you can grow Jack be littles in 5 gallon containers, but with the grow bags we have to go to at least one size up (7 gallon) for a healthy plant. If you want to have two plants per bag, I 'd recommend to use a 15 gallon one. I hope this helps and thank you so much for your comment!😊

Love your video! It inspired me and my 5-year-old daughter to grow pumpkins this summer. We live in Southern California by the coast and it is quite warm...noticing that our plants leaves are wilting in the heat of the day - after watering they perk back up when in the shade. Should I be watering them earlier in the day? I see a lot of notes that say "water at the roots" but what does that mean for grow bags like in this video - should we be setting the bag in a tray of water? Or just watering them long and deeply before the heat of the day sets in?
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 2 жыл бұрын
First, I am delighted that you love my video. If you are growing in grow bags, you will definitely need to water the plants daily. I am also located in So Cal and have had the same experience with the wilting leaves. This is very common on plants with large leaves like pumpkin or cucumber, so nothing is wrong with the plant. However, I strongly recommend to provide some sort of shade, like shade cloths(30% or 40%) when it gets over 90F. Also, pumpkins have very shallow roots, so sometimes you will have to water twice a day. The hot midday sun evaporates all the water on the soil surface (and also from soil on the outer edge of the grow bags) so make sure that top layer of the soil is always watered. On your second question, watering at the root means "not watering the leaves- or not showering the plant". Wet leaves are prone to fungal disease specially in warm weather. You typically never want to have your grow bag or pots sit in a tray of water. That is why pots have holes for drainage so roots don't sit in water to prevent root rot. As I said, pumpkins have shallow roots and it is better to keep the top soil moist rather than watering deeply and less frequently. I prefer to water in the mornings and if it is hot, again in the evening. But as long as the soil is kept moist, you don't need to worry too much about the time of watering. I hope this helps and thank you so much for your inspiring comment. Happy growing!

Do you have problems with squash bugs going after your pumpkin vines? If so, how do you treat/prevent?
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 2 жыл бұрын
Not squash bugs but I've had to deal with cucumber beetle in the past. I have learned that for pumpkins the best pest management is to monitor new plants and to prevent. I look regularly for eggs under the leaves and/or spray with neem oil mix. Add 1oz neem oil+1 tsp dish soap to one gallon of room temp. water add spray BOTH sides of the leaves. Try to spray in the evenings so you don't disturb bees for pollination. If you are doing hand pollination and don't have bees around, you may also use traps such as squash borer traps. I hope this helps. Thank you for getting in touch!

I just started a container garden this year. We only did tomatoes, bell peppers, and then serranos and jalapeños. We had such a huge success with them. Plus we did parsley and basil, and have been pleased with what we have grown. Only issue we had was cilantro. But we want to do more stuff next year. We did five gallon buckets that we made into self-watering. Can these pumpkins be planted in something like that size or should it be 10 gallons?

It will be hard to say without seeing. But it might be due to different reasons: too much nitrogen or not enough phosphorous in the soil, too hot weather, small containers (if grown in pots), flowers not being pollinated properly, or disease. For me, most of the times it is the weather (mainly too hot) that causes to have different results. You can check to see which one applies to you. Hope you will have abetter results next time. If the grow bag is big enough, then yes. I recommend to use a 15 gal bag to plant 2 of them. For smaller bags, you may still be able to grow 2, but it might effect growth and fruit production. Thank you for visiting.

Not for the fruits, but for the leaves and plants sometimes I do spray them. I check my plants regularly, and if needed, generally I spray Neem oil mix or Spinosad mix. I make sure to check and also spray BOTH sides of the leaves and not just top. I have shown some steps in few of my videos: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n3zSk6mAqMqCaLMsi=8j7ivFnL4X9hTJgf&t=359 . Have you ever tried to save the seeds for next season? My guess is since it’s a hybrid, it won’t grow true, but some sights say you can?!🤷‍♀️ I have read that when the tendril above a fruit is brown, the fruit is ready to pick.

Correct, seeds from hybrid varieties may not grow same fruits again. Harvesting these pumpkins are much easier with their orange color at maturity. Thank you for visiting!

Have you experienced such thing ever that pumpkin not grows afer over pollinated by so many male flower.
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 2 жыл бұрын
Hi there. It is not uncommon for pumpkins to not get mature and die off. You will always have many fruit flowers, but very few fruits. I have experienced it and the main reason is poor and unsuccessful pollination. There are few things I can suggest: 1. Pollinate in early morning time frame. Female flowers only fully open and stay open for couple of hours in the mornings to attract pollinators such as bees. 2. When hand pollinating, make sure not to damage the stigmas of female flower. Try to brush it very softly. 3. Pick healthy male flower making sure they have plenty of yellow powder on stamen (you can definitely use many make flowers to pollinate one fruit flower). 4. And lastly, feed your pumpkin with a low nitrogen fertilizer (5-10-10) plus calcium to help fruit production. I hope this helps and thank you very much for visiting. Good luck!😊

@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden Жыл бұрын
Probably the soil has too much nitrogen, or the fertilizer you use is high in nitrogen, which can prevent flowering. Try to feed your plant with low-nitrogen soluble fertilizer. Check the N-P-K ration on the fertilizer and select the ones that have higher numbers of P,K compare to N (e.g. 0-10-10 or 5-10-10). There are few choices I listed on my amazon page like: Fox Farm Tiger Bloom, Scotts supper bloom and Grow More 7505 Hawaiian Bud and Bloom. ( www.amazon.com/shop/influencer-3dd9a3b6/list/3OOR0YYL58Y0Z?ref_=aip_sf_list_spv_ofs_mixed_d ) . Some other reasons for no flowers could be hot or humid weather, and too much or too little watering. Hope this helps and thanks for the visiting!

Can we talk about the brand of soil, changing the soul, and feeding the plant in more detail because mine is still in the small growing stage but it seems to be stuck there
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 5 ай бұрын
I don't have the details but will try to answer to my best. If you transplanted them in big pots lately, give them some time and they will grow quickly. If they've been transplanted for a while and still not growing, I think they need a boost. So try to feed them with water soluble tomato fertilizers. And if you haven't planted them, plant them as soon as possible. And lastly, some times there are issue in the soil and insect effects the roots. If you see any pest activity in or around the soil, you can try sprinkling DE amzn.to/4d6znCQ on the soil. For detail on the soil, check my video here on how I make my potting mix: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jpXMap6teqaSjpIsi=V5XRUPX_4g_ADcAJ . Hope this helps. Happy growing and thank you for your comment!

How do you get a lot of soil for cheap?
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 2 жыл бұрын
By making my own soil mix, that 's why I always show in my videos the portions needed to make your own potting mix. I also clean my used potting soil from roots and add fresh compost and sometimes fertilizer to make new soil. I try to make my own compost from kitchen scrap, yard trimming and old plants/roots. You can also buy peat moss or coir, perlite and bagged compost separately from your garden center and mix them to make potting soil at a fraction cost of the bagged potting mix. I hope this helps and thank you for visiting.

Top soil usually doesn't have nutrients needed for a healthy plant and I would not recommend. You may use bagged garden soil or a better option would be bagged composted manure (steer, chicken,...). I hope this helps and thanks.
