These kits look absolutely amazing, and I do plan on purchasing some! As a single person who mostly just feeds myself, I wish there was also a half tray size made, and sold. In the perfect world, I like to start new batches every 2 to 3 days to keep them as fresh as possible. For people who like to grow multiple types of sprouts at the same time, I think a smaller size would be popular.

Also for this water reservoir method, can you pour water all the way up to the seeds, so they are just very barely submerged in the water? Or should the water in the reservoir never touch the seeds? Is there a higher risk of mold with this approach? I'm a noob grower and still learning everything I can from your channel, lol. Lots of tiny little details I'm completely clueless about!
@OnTheGrow
@OnTheGrow Жыл бұрын
Personally, we would not suggest that, mostly because it can cause seed rot which can get veryyyy gross lol. Its better for the water to be just below the seeds and over time the roots will grow down into it. No worries at all! Asking questions is a great way to learn and get clarity on things quick. We learned everything we know from failing first, and thanks to that we not only know what to do, but also what not to do haha. Its just part o the process. Hope your grows go amazing!!

I have been using silicone mats but they stain terrible are you having this issue? and what do you soak in to sanitize please?
@OnTheGrow
@OnTheGrow Жыл бұрын
Here's how we clean & sanitize ours: Once you have removed all the roots, you have a few cleaning options! The silicone can be washed by first using a food-safe soap & hot-warm water to lather and rinse using your hands. You can also clean it by making a paste with 1/4 cup of baking soda & warm water. Dip the silicone into the paste and let it sit for 5 minutes before rinsing. We also suggest following up your wash with a Natural Silicone Safe Sanitizing before reuse, such as: Option 1) Sink filled with Hot water & Dish-soap, soak for 20 mins. Option 2) Boil in water for 2-3 minutes. Option 3) Equal parts Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide to Water soak for 5 mins - 24hours. **Do not use scouring pads or other abrasive scrubbers as this may damage the silicone or create micro cuts that hold harbor bacteria.** For stubborn stains, soak in a higher amount of baking soda & water for up to 24hours. Stains haven't caused any issues with our grows personally. Just remember to check that you are using food safe & silicone safe cleaning/sanitizing practices so that you don't damage the material! We don't have much issue with them staining terribly. Hope this helps! 🙏

6:04 Hi Mandi, from day 4 onwards, do you still mist them with water from the top? Or is it bottom watering all the way?
@OnTheGrow
@OnTheGrow Жыл бұрын
Hello! For this tray type I add water to the bottom tray starting from day one. I mist the seeds and then cover it up. Fro that point forward I do not mist them, unless it seems like there is a dry spot. Then I will mist that area to make sure the seeds germinate properly. You can still top water if you feel it is necessary! Just don't over saturate the seeds or that can cause issues.

Do I have to put the tray under a light? Or can I use Texas sun? And if I do that, can I do it inside? or does it need to be outside? Thanks
@OnTheGrow
@OnTheGrow 11 ай бұрын
You can use natural light too. Direct sun would be too harsh, however in a well lit area of your home it should work well. Just note that sometimes if they aren't getting enough light you'll see smaller leaves (less fluffy), and taller / lanky stems.

Wonderful video! Glad to see a new On The Grow video after soo much time!. I'm actually using a very similar method for growing my soiless microgreen but for some reason some seed prefer to develop root upwards sticking it on the reverted dome rather than growing downward directly in the water. My only solution for now is to grow them directly in blackout to not allow any seed/dome contact and force root to grow down. Anyone have experienced something similar?
@OnTheGrow
@OnTheGrow Жыл бұрын
Thank you!! It feels great to be back. Yes, we have experienced this too. What I (Mandi) have noticed is whenever they go through the initial germination phase with weight, they will typically uproot some during this period, then once they go into blackout, the roots grow downward into the bottom no-holed tray. It usually sorts its self out perfectly for us every-time. I also find that I lean more towards mesh trays with this type of medium, though it still works great with slotted or a no-holed tray. More of a personal preference.

Welcome back. ☺️I was thinking about you guys recently. I have stopped growing microgreens because for some reason they are spindly and pale. Without seeing them, could you possibly guess what is wrong? I'm following the way you had shown in the past. I even bought new seeds thinking that my seeds were old. That didn't make any difference. Any hints would be very helpful. I miss my bowls of microgreens at dinner time. I'm hoping you are selling those kits, I would love to have one. Thanks.
@OnTheGrow
@OnTheGrow Жыл бұрын
Hello! Yes we sell these kits, there our kit! They can be found on onthegrow.net/collections/all : As for your question, its really hard for me to judge when I don't have a photo reference, but I'll do my best to guess. If they are spindly & pale, to me that sounds like a lack of light, because otherwise they would be full, colorful & fluffy. If your growing in a window/with natural light, you may need to move them or buy a light. The other thing it could be is lack of water? However they would be laying over in most cases. Hope this helps, and thanks for watching our video!

Love your channel and I have learned so much. In fact, based on my success using your grow methods I have added larger kratky style hydroponic containers to my space. I have not bought greens at the grocery store for two years. I am curious about using the humidity dome. None of your other trays use a humidity dome. So is this a new direction you’re going or what’s the purpose of the humidity dome, I guess is my question. I know what the purpose of a humidity dome is but, with such great success not using a humidity dome, why would you now add the humidity dome? Thank you.

We're honored to have been such an inspiration to your success, and appreciate you sharing this with us too. It feels good whenever you don't have to rely on store bought greens!! As for your question, the reason we use a humidity dome instead for this home kit is simply because it is easier for most people to use who are growing at home! Hope that helps! @@OnTheGrow ok that makes sense. I am in the process of revamping my setup and adding some soil (potting mix) based planters. There are a few things that I have not had much luck with growing to maturity in a hydroponic system, like any brassicas and spinach. Last winter I did a small soil based experiment and had kale and spinach all winter, so I am expanding that part of my garden. And I’m going to go order some of your small micro green trays. The ones that are like 5 x 8. That way I can grow more variety and do more succession planting. I don’t really like growing in 10 by 10s or 10 by 20s because I simply can’t eat that much before it goes bad. Although, last winter I did start growing the larger trays and freeze drying the excess greens, and then making my own super green powder for my morning post workout smoothie. So you guys have impacted my life in so many positive ways.

Yay! We are happy to hear that they arrived!!! Thank you for supporting our business. I (Mandi) personally do not soak my seeds, expect for Peas (8hrs). However, we have another customer who owns 4 of these trays and she likes to soak hers. Really its personal preference. As for cleaning & Sterilizing the trays, we do not recommend putting them in the dishwasher. Instead, what I like to do is wash them in my sink with warm to hot water & a food-safe soap. You can also do a natural sanitizing soak that is silicone safe by combining Vinegar, Baking Soda & Water (I suggest googling for the ratios). Hope this helps!

This was an excellent video for us home growers using that style of tray. I was wondering do you think it would be beneficial to cover the tray with something dark while the seeds are germinating? Also I wonder why humidity domes are not just made flat. I think it would be better without a handle especially while the seeds are germinating and it’s really not necessary to use to pick up the dome. Welcome back.

@@OnTheGrow Yes I understand the height/shape of the dome is useful when used upright. I was referring to the handle in the middle of the dome. When you invert the dome, possibly even putting on a weight while the seeds are germinating. The handle in the middle isn’t allowing any pressure on the seeds and it was where your seeds in the video got dry.

If you're growing to sell, then yes. Always check with your local health department or other departments to find out if they require you to get permits & inspections, and what that consists of. Where we live, neither were required at the level we grew & sold at back in 2019. Instead we had to have a registered business with the state, and our food handlers licenses. As for our tray in this video, its more meant for individuals who grow at home for themselves.
