Thank You for doing this big wonderful experiment and sharing it with us. I am hoping to grow a few again. We had 3 plants that lived about 1.5 years and never came back after being dormant .

I have 6 Daruma wasabi growing in 5 gallon pots. I live in LA in the South Bay along the coast. I'm in zone 10b and so far, so good. I catch water in rain barrels and keep the pots wet but not drenched. I feed with organic 5-5-5 fertilizer and use Sluggo (iron phosphate) to control slugs and snails. My soil is standard potting soil. Shade is must with dappled sunshine. I periodically spray with Monterey Disease Control and Spinosad for mildew and bugs.

I also use azomite for minerals to mimic soil by a running stream which is the natural habitat of wasabi.

I appreciate this video. I recently got a wasabi plant myself and there's not a lot of information on the net to help with looking after one, or what there is, is very conflicting.

@@rykytran A quick question. Have you ever seen it where a wasabi plant has many diminuative leaves? Mine's grown a lot of leaves but they're all really small (the size of a coin) and have stayed this way for at least a month now. It does have some larger leaves, but only about 5. I'm growing it in a tall 2L pot.

I don't think you gave an update on the difference between the 3 plants where you harvested to leaves and the 3 you didn't. I was also looking forward to you sharing how you divide the mature plants. I had three wasabi plants in the CA bay area, two of them I lost to root rot which taught me a lot about how important drainage is. I've also heard they can be grown in ponds with basket pots, so far I'm nursing the one plant i have left, but i have a small pond - I'll give that try next year if i successfully divide the one plant i have left. Crossing my fingers.

I think the leaf curl on the plants may be thrips, an insect. I've seen similar symptoms on infected spinach.
@rykytran
@rykytran 7 ай бұрын
yes. most of the curling have been from insects of some sort.

You might want to try larger perlite too! I use #3 perlite for a lot of my plants (non wasabi) and it drains so much better and doesnt float as much either

Is it possible to buy seeds? I'd like to try growing it but it seems like all the seeds offered in Amazon and ebay are fake. I know that is hard to germinate but I would not be able to legally import plants into my country

How many months did you grow the large wasabi rhizomes? I live in Muju-gun, South Korea. Wasabi is grown in the countryside. 15 heads

No idea about wasabi pathogens but in other plants there is a possibility of spreading it by cutting sick llants then healthy plants after.

Isn't if funny that we should say "real wasabi"? The other stuff is not wasabi(name for a plant) and should have to label itself as such. I'll settle for Fake Wasabi on the packaging.
