THS stands for Tempered Hardened Steel. This is standard steel that is heated, creating a much stronger (yet more brittle) steel (Safety Glasses Please!). The problem with this type of fastener is that cement, mortar and concrete vary widely in tensile strength, by a factor of ten anyway. One person's mortar may be nice and soft, where another one has hardened Concrete. I will guarantee you will have very little success driving these into a high tensile strength concrete. And many foundation concrete blocks are just that, for obvious reasons. Your best bet if hammering is not working and depending on the concrete mixture, is to drill a ~1/8" hole with a masonry bit. This should allow the nail to enter and still have plenty of grab. If not, simply get a small container of masonry repair cement, fill the hole and try again...and change to a smaller, 3/32" drill.

That’s very good advice for a light picture frame or decorative item. (start the nail straight, then tilt the head up a little bit so it drives in at a slight angle, and when you hang your picture, it will gravitate flat against the wall. When it comes to heavier items, wall clocks, big mirrors, etc., I get the tiniest masonry drill and go at that same angle facing the tip slightly down,, then I take a regular harden, wood screw, and it amazingly fits tight in the hole that was drilled. I have hung some very heavy things this way, and the screw being slightly tilted up, forces the heavy item towards the wall to give it even more stability and strength.

Masonry nails have been available for more years than you have been alive. Be advised that they are also very brittle due to their hardness. Therefore safety glasses should be worn when using them. As for the masonry drill, they do last for a considerable amount of time. Beyond that, by inserting a piece of something like a piece of plastic tie wrap into the drilled hole first, a conventional nail can be used. And it will hold as well as the masonry nail.

I just need to hang pictures, and I will try these, but I'm skeptical. I just moved into a 1919 red brick building with the bricks separated by mortar. I know I've tried these before on cinder block and they didn't work (just chipped everything around it like in "The Shawshank Redemption"). I'm a bit spoiled having lived in Germany, There, at any hardware store, you can get German high-tensile nails for concrete that are black in color, non-fluted and as thin as upholstery needles. Those things go through concrete and brick like an ice pick through butter. I'm still kicking myself for not have brought some back with me in my suitcase.

There is also the option of using a glue adhesive like PL liquid nails products its definitely not as durable as nails, screws, or other fasteners but if your not going to be pulling on it, or in contact with it . you may just want to glue it in place. Removing would require a scraper. Possible damage to the backing of picture though... just another thought.
