Hand taming a bird is never easy. So in this video I personally show you how I go about taming an aggressive Cockatiel, at first your bird will take time to warm up to you but once you take the time out of your day and bond with your bird.They'll be hopping up on your finger in no time and wanting to spend every waking moment with you.

I own a rescue cockatiel. When I first got him he had no feathers on his back, he hissed at me, every time I would take him out of his cage he would bite me pretty hard (it didn't make me bleed) but I continued. Everyday I would take him out, give him some millets, talk to him, then put him back. Now it's two years later, he has all of his feathers, loves to be pet and held, and will even chirp back to me. Something to recommend to people now owning a bird, don't give up on them.

How do you tame a hissing flying biting scared cockatiel... I’m desperate
@jessjustjess5140
@jessjustjess5140 5 жыл бұрын
The hissing means he doesn't trust you or who ever he's hissing at. So for that you have to move slow towards him and make a soothing sound with your mouth. I usually ssh, like your trying to put a baby to sleep. The biting means he wants to be left alone and again the trust issue. If he actually bites, leave him alone for a bit before you try again. Make sure your spending time with him everyday to help with the bond & Trust. They like the being massaged in the back of their necks. The flying you can trim its wings. I wouldn't recommend doing it yourself if you never done it. I had someone show me how and teach me and now do it myself but its like hair wings grow so you just trim a bit every so many months and they can still fly but not too high so they are safe and they don't hit things. If done right it doesn't hurt them its like getting a hair cut. Good luck!

How do you get the bird out of his cage and onto this training perch if he is not tame? And why is he not just flying away from you whenever you approach him? There is no way my cockatiel would allow my hand to get that close to him, he flies to the opposite side of the room.
@AaronLewisOfficial
@AaronLewisOfficial 6 жыл бұрын
About a month before hand taming him I would go up to his cage and just talk to him and whistle to him, he got used to me and yours will to. Then I opened his cage, it took about an hour for him to come out and the he flew around the house and started flying into everything, so I chucked a light tea towel over him and cut his wing weather and then put him on his perch and started training him. Hence why he’s not trying to fly away from me! Every bird is different however, I always recommend trimming there wing weathers while taming because trust me it makes it so much easier! Good luck with your bird

@AbuMalek5 6 жыл бұрын
There are some people who stick gently the the 6 big feathers on each wing with a small scotch tape to avoid clipping it, after 4 or 5 days the bird gets used to hands and u can take off the scotch tape.

New bird owners (who maybe don’t want to watch the entire video): Here are some tips: 1. Get a larger cage if your bird gets mad when you stick your hand in. The bird is territorial, and so it’s best to get a larger cage. You can get a good size cage for $60-$70 on Amazon. 2. Don’t stick your hand in often, and when you do (to put food/water in, or change the perches or toys,) wear something like a glove (so your hand won’t look like your hand) this way, the bird wont associate your hand with intrusion. 3. When the bird bites you, hold your hand still and do not move. No matter how much it hurts, you need to teach the bird that biting will not solve the problem. The bird just wants you to go away. If whip your hand back when it tries to bite you, that will teach it that biting you makes you go away. After it realizes that biting you won’t do anything, it will stop biting. 4. Let the bird come out of the cage on it’s own. Stay by the cage, talk to the bird, read to it, sing to it, etc. and after a few weeks, you’ll make significant progress. Do this one day: Put the birds favorite food outside of the cage and normal food/food it doesn’t like in the cage. Do this often. 5. Take baby steps! The bird won’t like you immediately. Trust takes time. Don’t try to rush! And don’t worry when the bird doesn’t like you immediately! Note: DONT TOUCH THE BIRD FOR THE FIRST WEEK!!! No matter how tempting it is, do not touch the bird. That will cause a lot of stress, and the bird could get sick or even die. On top of this, it will 100% ruin your relationship with the bird, and your bird will not want to be around you. Good luck! P.S. here is an excellent thread that I used when training my bird. It works like magic! www.parrotforums.com/general-parrot-information/49144-tips-bonding-building-trust.html

Ok I has a macaw... he has a big beak... we need to get him used to everyone and I’m the victim, I have to look after it and teach it to not bit until you literally see BONE, yes bone... so I have to sacrifice my hand to him, but he doesn’t want to step up or anything, he slither their leans forward and bites and GRINDS his beak, he rips flesh apart, but it’s slowly working... I hate that stupid thing, hot it flies away ffs, buttt if I look after it I get a cockatiel... yay...

At first he would fly away when ever I got him to step up but now he'll step up and stay on my hand. He still hisses and tries to bite (he can't or hasn't learnt that he can) but things are going well. I usually take him up to my bedroom and spend hours with him and today he sat on my shoulder and preened my hair. He's still very timid but after being out for a bit he calms down. Is there anything else I can do to maybe help him?

i had a cockatiel a few years ago and he was tamed from the previous owner and just needed to get used to me but was the sweetest boy ever! i was too upset to try and tame another bird after he passed but my mom literally bought two and brought them into my room and said "here you go, train them" it so difficult because they are so afraid and run/fly away from me, my mom and i trimmed the wings cause the boy kept flying into things. will it be harder to tame them because there are two? wats the best/quickest way to get them to trust me and other people

Hey, was your cockatiel hand fed (by that I mean ONLY hand fed no playtime or trying to desensitize with hands when babies)? Or parent fed? Curious because I'm getting a hand fed (no hand taming) cockatiel and was wondering if you had to go through this with that birb thanks!

ok so i would appreciate any answer, just a bit puzzled. so ive recently gotten a cockatiel, we are not sure how old they are but all we know is that they were born last year. its the first day of having him but im struggling to get him back in the cage. ive tried luring him into the cage with an apple but he doesn't seem interested. ive tried to use the step up command (as he was hand reared), thats no use. ive done pretty much done everything but force him into the cage, and i feel like if i try to force him into the cage than i will lose what little trust we have. so im stuck in a little dilemma. ive had him out for about 5 hours now and i need to go downstairs to help out with chores

I'm still in the process of trying to tame mine. I moved mine into a smaller cage and have it next to my bed. for the first few weeks (with her in the smaller cage) I would just sit on my bed and put my hand in her cage holding some millet. for about a week id do that several times a day and eventually she would stand on the perch next to my hand and eat the millet. it took another week before she would stand on my hand and i was able to lift my hand up. I've started letting her out and have been working on recall training with her. as long as she's hungry 9/10 she will fly onto my arm when I call her name. I've also found clicker training works well

Good luck with your new bird, and you can either wait for your bird to come out of the cage by itself or you can get a wooden perch/stick and get your bird to step up on it and move it do the perch! Hope that helped, thanks for watching Kristen!!

Yeah you can cover it, as long as your bird can’t see the cage itself it will be fine :)

Hi Aaron, I wanted to ask if you have any videos on tiel noises and what they mean. I've had my two girls for week now and today they started talking/yelling. I was just on my computer with music quietly playing in the background. I just want to make sure that the noise they make doesn't mean anything like they're scared or upset. They're crests were laid back but not flat on their heads. Also you mentioned that you shouldn't work on taming while the bird is in it cage but what can I do to help them freak out less whenever I go into their cage to change their food? And thanks for the videos!

You said somewhere else you clipped the wings? I'm always scared my cockatiel will fly away whenever I get too close and she always flies high up on a curtain pole which really sucks. I want to clip her wings but don't at the same time, is there like a small clip I can do? Like only a small one...
