I have kept Cockatiels for several years now and I thought it was time to do an everyday care KZbin video for anyone that is interested and considering getting one of these beautiful birds. Cockatiels are one of my favourite birds and I will forever recommend them for anyone that wants a feathery companion, however if you do suffer with severe asthma than maybe the Cockatiel isn't for you.
This is my older video on Cockatiel care if you wish to watch my updated in feel free to come visit my KZbin channel and check it out.

I have a few tips on how to get your cockatiel to eat new foods: 1. Show him that you're eating it. Parrots share their food in the wild. Doing this will show him that the food is edible and yummy. 2. Leave the food you want him to try in the cage for 30 minutes to an hour without other food in there. His natural foraging instincts will start to come out, and he will try to find other things to eat 3. If he likes things like seed or paper, try giving him things that look similar to that. Broccoli kinda looks like seed, and leafy greens look like paper. That's the things that have worked for me! Hope this helped :)

A tip for perches: do not get one that is strait. For example like a pencil. Get them one that is bumpy & a little slanted. They can get a disease in their feet if you have a strait perch. Nice video! I have 3 cockatiels. :))

if the cockatiel is friendly and is used to the house or room they are at, they wont fly to the window or the fan of course. as for the untamed ones, that is absolutely the right way! you dont want them to fly around and hurt themselves because they’d be too scared

Its more dangerous to cut your birds wings, if you dony want your bird flying into something that they can hurt themselves on then keep it out the way and cover the mirrors up. My Indian ring neck's old owner cut her wings and everytime shes out of her cage she trys to fly and hits her head off the side boards and tables etc, its cruel. And i find it easier and safer to tame a bird that can fly
@AaronLewisOfficial
@AaronLewisOfficial 6 жыл бұрын
That’s interesting to hear, I never used to cut his wings. But I started letting him out a lot and every time I did he would either fly into the ceiling fan blades or windows and I didn’t want one of those times to be fatal. Now that his wings are clipped he’s never hurt himself.

For my tiel personally it was safer to have her wings cut. She would fly into walls and doors and furniture, never windows. I don't think she ever really learned to fly. She also lands super hard. Since I cut her wings she's slowly learned how to navigate. She still lands really hard but she is hitting less things now. My budgie on the other hand was a natural born flier and never needed a wing clipping

hilomona bird can still fly when they have cut wings, they just don’t have lift to reach a high flying height. Many bird owners clip their wings to keep them safe, and its nothing like cutting a dogs legs. It’s like getting a hair cut their wings will grow back. I have 2 parakeets I don’t cut their wings but I understand why some owners cut their wings, it’s for their safety and for other reasons as well.

I’ve been raising birds since I was four and have never clipped their wings. My first bird was a budgie and I got her at four years old. She loved me and eventually would fly to me when I called her. She never had a huge incident crashing into things and she lived till I was 12. I’ve had a series of budgies and currently have a conure. I don’t recommend clipping their wings since they’ll be attached to you anyway. You always need to take your bird out 🙏🙏

Your not technically disabling your bird. Your protecting them from possible dangers and they can still fly, just not very high or far. And they also determine more to you if you do. Im planning to clip my birds wings once they trust me enough. Especially since I have a cat and dog (don't worry, they're both small and friendly). Hey!! I'm planning on adopting a cockatiel in a few months (because I want to do all the possible researches before taking one). My parents are divorced, so I have to switch home for three days at week. What can I do? Do I bring the cage with the cockatiel with me? Or it's better if I don't adopt one? Also I go to school, which takes me 5 hours in the morning and four on Wednesday. Honestly, if these things are a big problems, I prefer to not adopt one than maltreating it. (from Italy)
@AaronLewisOfficial
@AaronLewisOfficial 6 жыл бұрын
Hello! It’s alright to bring your bird with you when you change houses, but as for being away from the bird for 4-5 hours a day I don’t know if that is wise. If your parents are at home and can socialise with it while your not there then that would be okay! Or if you have plenty of toys in the cage and make sure it’s large enough so the bird has room that would also be okay! 4-5 hours isn’t that long as long as you spend time with your bird when you get home by just letting it out while you do school work or have it sit on your shoulder while you watch TV! I have 6 birds so when I’m not home they chatter amongst themselves and play with there toys and it doesn’t bother them when I’m not home. It’s good that you are doing a lot of research before getting the bird, other bird owners might have a different opinion than me. So it’s up to you whether you think you would be able to spend time with it when you get home and have a big cage and a lot of toys for it to play with while your away :)))

Hey just some extra advice. just remember birds are very territorial. Moving their living space often might cause unneeded stress. The last thing you want is for your bird to become territorial about their cage alone and then you can never get them out without them being super aggressive. I wouldn’t get a bird if I was moving often especially as a student because birds like these can live well over 10 years and I don’t know what my life will look like that far in advance. I will say birds are great but it’s just as much of a commitment as a dog or any other animal so don’t get one if you want an easy pet!

They are absolutely more friendly when you cut their wings. It is also MUCH safer. The bird could fly around your house and hit something, or fly AWAY. That's actually how I got my cockatiel now - someone's bird got lost in a storm and flew away, and we found her outside. If you're going to domesticate a bird, it doesn't need to fly. They can not fly anywhere in their cages. They can still walk wherever they want, and fly a little, but they will flap safely to the ground assuming they have not been chopped inappropriately short. Also, you can put the bird on your finger and bob it up and down...when I "give my bird air" like this, she flaps her wings, and gets to exercise her wings a little. I do it in the morning before I leave for work so she can stretch and get a little exercise before being in her cage for the day.

I don't think it's necessary with a "cuddly" bird like a Cockatiel. Once tamed, they will mostly stay near or on you because of their own nature to bond. My Green Cheek conure was similar and eventually he barely flew at all unless it was from something to me. If he left me he generally was more skittish and climbed to his destination. But then again they don't get as stressed as other birds for being handled for the same reason providing they trust you, so go for it if it's for piece of mind.

I recently dealt with a friend's cockatiel flying off into the night from getting spooked. The next morning was a simple search whistling out his favorite tunes until he heard them and sang back. Having located him, I got the person he's really bonded with to come over (he likes me, but loves his owner). The cockatiel instantly flew out of the tree doing the cockatiel "trill alarm" screech and landed on his owner. Clipping wings makes the bird dependent, not friendly. Proper training and bonding will do a better job than any wing clipping.

I have a rescued cockatiel. When I got her, I noticed that her wings were clipped. Many times she wanted to fly but dropped to the floor or hit the wall. She looked surprised- why can’t I do the bird thing? (She probably was caged for all her life in the past.) Even worse, when she hit the wall, she broke her wing bone and the only way for her avian vet to do was to glue it (there is no permanent solution given her small size). I feel sorry for her. Cockatiel is a different kind of breed; they love to bond with you and stay close to you! Even my rescued ‘tiel is an older bird, she has learned to adopt and like me.

Are cockatiels loud? Such as are they loud a times or do they just tweet every so often? Can their feather dust cause allergic reactions? And do they smell? Sorry for so many questions. I need to know these things before I can convince my mom to let me get a bird, And I thought it would be a good idea to ask someone who is experienced with birds. :)
@AaronLewisOfficial
@AaronLewisOfficial 7 жыл бұрын
If you don't give them attention all the time they can be extremely loud, not as loud as conures or other birds but still loud! They can squawk for ages, and I don't have any allergies but I would think they wouldn't cause allergies. Males don't stink but females do when they are laying eggs...

Kenya'Stuff, I have a male 'tiel & he can get loud if he's trying to find me, but he's generally pretty quiet. He'll mostly make a series of soft chirps & '"coughs." As for allergies, I'm sensitive to his bird dander/dust; it aggravates my asthma. So even if you aren't allergic, I would advise against keeping your 'tiel in your room. Besides, any pet bird will do better when kept in a place where most of your family hangs out, like the TV room, where my baby is. It's very important you spend time with your bird, as you & your family will be his new flock.

Thanks! I've just been adopted by a cockatiel who had been owned by someone who must have really loved him and trained him a bit ( he is about 12 months old) but, for whatever reason, could no longer care for him. 'Marvin' is his name (now), his name was unknown from the previous owner, and I haven't had a pet bird for over 6 years now. Side line - I have learned so much about aquarium fish over the past 12 months from You Tube people - I could not keep a fish alive for more than three weeks previously :( . Anyway, I've realised I could learn a lot more about bird keeping this way and I've been watching clips and realising how much my last bird missed out on things, I just didn't 'get' it. This is my new challenge, to train a bird to do things, to help it have a more fulfilling life, learn more about its health needs, learn more about its mental health/stimulation needs. Thank you for your video, I've subscribed and I will look at more, there is so much to learn out there. Well done.

@AaronLewisOfficial
@AaronLewisOfficial 7 жыл бұрын
It depends how you try and tame him, if you go into his cage and try and touch him he will hate you because that's his safe zone. So make sure you take him out of sight from his cage and I do HIGHLY recommend cutting his wings during the hand taming process. I know some people say it's bad but it always works great when I'm trying to hand tame a bird. Lastly make sure you reward him if he does hop up on your finger with a sunflower seed or some millet, my male Cockatiel was 2-3 years old when I got around to hand taming him and he's my bird companion now! Good luck :)

@@animations3079 a bit late, but it's her choice whether or not she wants to clip. if she takes your advice and lets her tiel out of its cage with it's wings un-clipped, it could fly into a wall/closed window/almost anything and potentially break a bone or even die, or it could fly out of an open window and end up lost and far away from home. i'm not saying it's bad to not clip your tiels wings, but if this is your first time owning a tiel and you're still getting to know your bird, i think you should 100% clip its wings if you're planning on letting it out of the cage.

I do believe thats easier to work with a bird that is clipped. But shouldn't clip your bird's wings. What's the point of having a parrot if it can't fly, it comes with the responsibility of owning a parrot. You should flight train your bird instead of clipping it's wings, it's better for the bird because it exercises your bird's wings, it's natural for them to fly, it stimulates your bird's brain by training, and it's cool. Don't get a parrot if you are looking forward to clipping it's wings. Imagine not being able to run. How would you feel?
@AaronLewisOfficial
@AaronLewisOfficial 6 жыл бұрын
It's safer for the bird if it's wings are clipped, they can still fly? They just can't fly upwards? They are still exercising and stimulating there brain? They just can't injure themselves by flying into a fan, behind a unit, into a window or mirror, out the door and the MANY other hazards ALL houses have. I'm pretty certain most bird owners clip there birds wings, but it's each to there own opinion.
@THEE.apples
@THEE.apples 6 жыл бұрын
Aaron Lewis If you flight train your bird wouldn't have to worry about them flying into windows or flying out the door. And why your bird be exposed to household hazards? If it were a dog you keep the household hazards away from it right? So do the same thing your bird.
@laurenkelly30
@laurenkelly30 6 жыл бұрын
I feel like people should only clip wings if the bird is a terrible flier and has the potential to harm itself by flying into something. Other than that I (personally) see no reason to clip wings. And when you do clip them they should of course still be able to fly slightly, taking away the 100% ability to fly is cruel imo :)

Marquise Washington, I had a 'tiel whose wings were clipped in the beginning when I first got him, & after a while he did learn on his own to come back to me whenever he'd go for a fly around the kitchen. The one I have now, I keep him clipped as he's flown into the kitchen window several times when startled & he can & will hurt himself. He just never got the hang of returning to me. Clipping a bird's wings is the same as clipping your nails; it doesn't hurt them at all unless you do it improperly. Besides, even when he's fully flighted, he still glides to the floor & walks around until you pick him up. As for exercising his flight muscles, he does flap them in his cage (same as my fully flighted 'keet, who's sadly not tame enough to let out), but he never flies around his cage which is large enough for him to do it. Even when he's out, he never flies unless he's startled. When he passes on & I adopt another 'tiel, I'll see how he is. If he'll return to me, I feel I can trust him flighted; if not, for his own safety, I'll also keep him clipped.

Agree. Flying is important for bird's mental and physical health. No healthy happy bird will fly into a wall or mirror. Cockatiels are one of the best of all parrots flyers. And from what I noticed, clipping wings is mostly popular in the US. I've never heard of any one from other countries doing it.

I had my birds wings cut just because when I got him he was bought at a garage sale. I dont know if he got hurt before or just never learned to fly, but he never really would fly he would crash. He would jump off the cage, flap like crazy then hit something really hard and a few times he would hold his wing up like he just hurt it more. So after he got clipped he stopped trying to crash around the house and I think felt better since he wasnt hurting himself anymore.
