Companies that reject candidates after hours of interviews and sometimes “shadowing” or “special” projects, should pay those candidates for their time. This would light a fire underneath the companies hiring teams to either reject or move on without wasting peoples precious time.

Yeah I think this is what’s upsetting to me. It hurts to be rejected, even though it’s not a personal thing. But to have to spend several rounds of interviews, some of them being more an 2+ hrs long and then being asked to go in person for every single one of them. And then to be told “Sorry but no” , if you’re even lucky to hear back from them. I’m so tired of it 😞 in my case I was offered a position then they took it away and are asking me to apply to a different one so I’d have to go through that process all over again. Such a waste of time

Do not let your job define who you are. I had a lot of interviews filled out tons of applications and got turned down several times. I used to take it really hard especially when I see job jumpers get hired over me. I learned to accept it. If it is meant to be it is meant to be. There are so many employers that are saying that can find good employees but yet they turn down better employees.

I literally nailed my dream job based on my emailed response to their rejection letter. I was still very interested in further opportunities and was gracious for their time. Over a month or two - I got a call. It was a job offer because their candidate ultimately did not work out for them. I've been in the job for 5 months and I've applied for another role - and I also got a job offer towards this promotional opportunity. Very grateful for your advice. Thank you.

I learned rejection is God's protection. There may be hidden elements that would have made you miserable without your knowledge. I also realized that just because you are getting along famously with the interview panel doesn't mean you landed the job. I recently got rejected from a position that paid a LOT of money and seemed exactly what I was looking for. They requested an interview the same day I was submitted. My entire resume is very honest in every way. I was surprised the feedback I received was the experience aspect. You read my resume! Dumbfounded but ok!

The same thing happened to me. I applied for the "dream job" for which I had extensive qualifications, and an extremely small candidate pool with similar qualifications. While I went through 4 rounds, I didn't receive the job and I was extremely disappointed. I asked myself "If I was turned down with a high match of qualifications, how hard is it going to be with only a partial match?" I have asked for feedback in the past, but companies will often NOT give you feedback to avoid potential lawsuits for bias.

Yeah this is what I’m dealing with right now. I applied for a position I really wanted and actually had the qualifications they had listed. I applied like three months ago and had 4 interviews already, the last one being a little over 2hrs long. They asked me some of the usual questions but some of them were truly ridiculous. I thought I was being offered a position because I was a good fit etc. The next day they called me and asked me to apply for a different position. I guess this was their way of retracting their offer. I’m extremely disappointed right now. I know it’s not personal but at the same time I feel like I got played. I really need a job but I wish I didn’t have to go through that process all over again 😭 not to mention the other rejections I’ve gotten before that .

Getting rejected from a job is much better than getting fired from a job, if the employer didn't think you were a good fit, they were probably right. The quicker you get rejected, the quicker you can move on with your job search. I'd rather get rejected in the beginning, then get hired and have to deal with that car crash three months later, when the employer realizes I'm not a good fit and needs to fire me.

I had already started the steps to a career transition into corporate so I'm trying to look at this as the door that I needed to open in order to move on. I've only been applying for a month now but have had a few interviews, one which got me pretty close. I was super excited for that opportunity and ended up getting a personalized rejection letter today. I am grateful that the recruiter took the time to explain things to me but it was definitely a hard one to see. Then this particular video popped up in my feed, so I found it at the perfect time. I recently went through a 4 hour (5 including the breaks) marathon virtual interview for a semi entry level technical position. First time doing so. It was series of Q/A and info sessions with managers and team members. I thought it went well only to get rejected a week later. My guess is that I was overqualified since I was experienced mid level in my previous job. I’m fine with the rejection just annoyed that I had to waste a majority of my day to do something that could have been just an hour.

When I get rejected for a job, I’ll go watch a funny movie like “Police Academy” or “The Wizard of Oz”. Listening to some soothing music or meditation. Don’t listen to heavy metal or horror movies, I don’t feel good after doing that. Getting rejection letters from company’s is life. It’s better go get a direct answer in a matter of days rather than being strung along for weeks or worse, months. There is always another job and opportunity and think about the loss as a learning experience.

That’s the thing though. A lot of companies will string you along for months with several rounds of interviews only to then reject. It’s a massive waste of time. I’d rather do a 2-3hr long interview once and get rejected then to waste several hours through a span of months only to get rejected.

@cdev2117

Don't do that, there could be a hundred reasons and probably there is nothing you can do about it. The person that had the position before you was male/female and they want another male/female in this position again...just because they are used to it, even unconsciously. The other person came from the same small town as one of the guys doing the interviews or they went to the same college or university. Maybe even the interviewer had something for lunch that upset his stomach and 1 or 2 hours later when he had the next interview it was gone and somehow that made him like that candidate better. Could be something crazy, one guy saw you get to your car after the interview and didn't liked that type of car or he team sticker on the trunk or whatever. I got ghosted by one company after an interview and was rejected by another just in the last few weeks... I just try just not to think too much about it.

I needed this video today because I've got a phone interview coming up Friday. I've been underemployed for several years now and looking for entry-level work because I need a job now that'll help me get into another career path and give me hands-on experience to boot. (Went into education and am sick of being told to just go be a substitute teacher while I regain my certification, but I lost my passion for the classroom and do any other teaching-related job now) I've never been very good at handling rejection and second- and third-guess myself all the time, which leads to dwelling on it and my inner cynic comes out. What's tricky is I'm a very approachable person and very expressive, but that is a 2-edged sword because the negativity can show on my face as easily as my bubbly positivity, which I'm sure potential employers can see if I'm not careful. I'm learning how to focus better and not let all my emotions show so easily (very tricky learning curve, but necessary) and prepping like mad for those interview questions I've likely been approaching wrong with info from these vids and others. Thanks for putting this vid out there--I REALLY needed this this week. I'm tired of the not-so-quiet desperation and want to succeed already.

The ugly truth about the interview process is that companies already have a candidate they will hire for a position and they're just going through the motions of interviewing people to comply with labor laws. Nepotism is also rampant in the job market. An executive in a company has a best friend whose son needs a job. The person may not be qualified for the position, but they want to do a favor for their friend. Also, in an industry like retail sales, they hire a candidate who is very attractive and management hires the candidate because they will make the store look good. Again, the candidate may be underqualified, but management wants them for this superficial reason. The most frustrating part of interviewing is not knowing what's going on in the head of the interview. Hiring managers are excellent actors. They can display enthusiasm for you and give great feedback about your qualifications and how you answer their questions. But it's all a facade and that's beyond your control.

Are you asking the recruiters afterward for more candidate and specific feedback? That's going to be your best source of self discovery. If you're not selling yourself effectively, then you know you need to improve your interview skills. If it's a experience you lack, then put together a plan to acquire it. Just like when you take your car to a mechanic, you look for symptoms and then troubleshoot from there. But, hey...you're getting interviews, so that's a great start!

Same, I am looking for what’s the typical cause of rejection this late. Because bad interviewers don’t make it that far. I am wondering if something is coming up on my background check because I have a common name or something, it’s really hard to tell. With bigger companies I just assume it’s corporate bs and they hired someone internally but it’s weird when it happens with smaller places over and over again. I have also gotten people saying, “we’d like to schedule another interview next week” and we set a date, then they cancel the day before.

SMH.

If I've had an interview with the actual company, not just the initial phone screen with the recruiter than, then I kind of expect to be contacted by phone not email. It just seems like the more professional thing to do. While it sucks to give bad news, you can leave the candidate on a positive note with a friendly conversation afterwards. Takes no more than 3-5 mins. If I've had an interview, I never contact the ones again that just send rejection emails or worst don't send one at all, yes it does happen. Recruiters and companies forget, they are being evaluated as well.

What do you do if you are about a month away from not being able to pay any bills and you aren't getting the responses from interviews that you would like? It gets a bit depressing. If I am in IT and I all of a sudden have to get a job at a fast food place or whatever, I can't even begin to figure out how to write that resume. Can things really get this bad?

I got an email thanking me for my time and the opportunity to learn more about my experiences and skills, but they decided to go with another candidate. Except...I never interviewed for that position! They must have sent the rejection to me by mistake 😂 I wasn't too disappointed as the pay that they were offering was considerably less than similar positions I applied for.

Honestly losing my mind rn. I have never been rejected after an interview but got my first rejection from the one I feel went the best. I did all the things and got rejected I'm actually really pissed about it, and I cant pretend to be happy about it. I sent them a fake little happy letter, but this is bullshit. Its actually bullshit I met all the requirments my experince in the area was professional more than 3+ years, I had other experince, a degree, and I still got rejected. This shit is infurating. Now I am sending 150 applications out until I get one yes bringing this years total to over 2k job apps. Do I hav a job? yes. Is it the job I want ? no. I failed the one I wanted for whatever reason when I made it past 3 interviews. This is a different kind of anger that I cant even do anything about. Its starting to look like accept not working my worth or do crime is the only answer.

I used to apply 200+ at a time. Now I noted my resumes weren't being successful. I went to my career counsellor and he told me to reduce applying. Now I just do about 10-15 at a time. However I always read the job ad carefully and align my skillset and evidence and it appears i have been getting a lot more success at interviews. Rejections are part of everyday life. It goes to show that a recruiter does not think you have the qualities required. I think frankly it should be interview, test and offer.

Does it mean anything when you get rejected immediately, (within 24 hours) when they told you in the interview that it would take about a month to get back in touch? Is it that clear cut for them? This exact scenario has happened within 24 hours within a month. I am just wondering what is going wrong and why I am not even being considered.

It's difficult to analyze when you do not know why you weren't offered the job. Employers don't tell you this, but maybe they should. I don't care how much time it takes. If you think this person is a possibility for the future, you might want to give them a little information so that they know for next time. It isn't any different than if they were hired and given feedback, except HR just isn't about the people at all. HR is being mismanaged on a big scale.

If I get a job rejection, I call the contact and politely ask what let me down. I have a couple of pre arranged questions and them wing some dependant on the answer. May be you are over qualified and they are intimidated by that ( so why give you an interview in the first place ) Maybe you spent too much time looking at the floor while answering.Maybe you didn't answer questions promptly enough. There are lots of reasons but if you don't ask, you will not learn that little extra bit needed to get the job

I disagree that it's to do with you, the rejection. In some cases yes, because I didn't prepare or I didn't do well in the interview, but there have been occasion in which everything seemed fine and they rejected me, now I think that we don't know why they really rejected, in some cases I asked for any feedback and they didn't respond or they angrily said that they found someone better (like #reuters). It's not always your fault however be conscious and sincere if things weren't well during an interview.

I've interviewed for hundreds of jobs over the past 15 years, both internally for a different position in the company I was currently working for, and for jobs at new companies, and I have asked for feedback every single time. 99.9% of the time I don't even get a response. That last 0.1% I get a very generic "we don't have any specific feedback we can provide" response, and that was because I personally knew the recruiter and asked them. They didn't get jack for feedback themselves. You can say "it never hurts to try", but that's frankly a pile of horse manure. Even if you personally respond to requests for feedback, you make up an infintesimally tiny fraction of a fraction of recruiters and hiring teams.

I'm going to have to develop some emotional armor, or it will mess with my self-esteem. I know I have a lot to offer for a company, so I'm not going to throw a pity party.
