newer bimmers and the new supra have a module at the battery; a disconnector in case of accident and current sensing for monitoring the battery charge. the charge current (be it from alternator, tender, or jump start terminals) is measured and logged into the computer so that the charge output of the alternator can be adjusted for fuel efficiency and overall lower parasitic loads. I'm sure their are other functions in there as well, but thats some of the main ones. so, if you do replace the battery, you are supposed to go into the computer with a scan tool to reset the battery monitor. This will prevent over/under charging the new battery. that is why you're not supposed to charge or jump directly at the battery terminals.

In what event would you use the battery tender? As in about how many days do the cars sit that would justify using one?

Generally if the car won’t be driven for 2 weeks I’d put it on. On a new car like this I bet it will still start 3-4 weeks later. But it’s just a good cheap precaution to make sure car is in top top shape with the electronics

Dang it young man you did it backwards. When taking the terminals off it’s cold then hot. When putting them on it’s hot then cold. You want to avoid sparks. Battery tenders fully charge a battery. Your alternator will unusually NEVER charge to 100%. So even though we use them for our weekend cars and motorcycles, they can benefit our daily drivers too. I get at least 6-7 years out of a battery kept on a tender.

I didn’t do it backwards, but it’s a great device to use for any vehicle.
