i am new to theory, please help me understand... so i just move up a 3rd and play the same pattern? sorry to seem dumb
@TheProgSchoolАй бұрын
@@apidyahex9213 if you want to stay in the same key using 3rds the pattern will be slightly different when you move it up.
@apidyahex9213Ай бұрын
@TheProgSchool is it the same intervals a 3rd up then? Thanks loads for replying . Also your playing is some of the best I've seen!! Theory knowledge seems to really be the key!!
@TheProgSchoolАй бұрын
@ the intervals change depending on the what key you are in. For example the notes a b c would be harmonized up with c d e if you were in A minor
@apidyahex9213Ай бұрын
@@TheProgSchool so, depending on which interval in the scale 3rd 6th etc, you start to harmonize from within the key, its the same interval numbers but for the new mode? Is that right? Or am i over thinking it 😅. Theory is so confusing .
@TheProgSchoolАй бұрын
@ not a new mode, just think of it as all from the same scale just starting a third higher for the harmony. So instead of starting a C major scale on c, start it on e for the harmony
@ZyborggianАй бұрын
6:25 bro but minor 7ths can be cool bro bro you can MAKE it a chord tone :^) That literally works sooooo well if the base chord is Em it doesn't not work hahaha you just get a brief passing Em7 sound. I mean besides the F# and A would likely be also considered passing tones anyways so. I just tested it slamming the Em root position left hand (Im a keys player) and played the melody and harmony (with the D) on top it sounds so pretty. I have utterly lost count of how many times I've added a non chord tone in my melody or harmony borrowed from an extension or some other non basic triad sound I like and made the chord structure more intricate. Obviously this is a basic lesson to start off with and its VERY comprehensive for a introductory lesson but maybe a follow up with exploring more of the stuff from the previous sentence might be cool :) Also there are very few things more annoying imo then major 2nds harmonies with no other harmonic context hahaha but even THAT might be to someones taste and so its obviously good you included it in a video like this just to be comprehensive. Also holy fuck are you also sweeping on the bass in the 7:35 example or nah cos if so goddaaaaaaamn yo (Goddamn regardless cos the composition examples are really baller and cool) Speaking of baller composition examples... how you transition right from the minor seconds in a very Periphery way to the very Facelessy mM7 at 10 mins in was so gross I love it. I love using that chord so much hahahahahahh that riff in general is honestly godtier. Especially when you chromatic mediant the AM7 to CM7 towards the end of the cycle (seems like u omit 5ths unless Im trippin but Id still analyze it that way) and then it resolves to the mM7 with the minor 2nds lead up. Fucking insane. 10:47 damn..... Rings of Saturn kinda made it so any riff using that particular approach to wholetone automatically makes me think of them even if I don't want to LOL. Anyway great content as always I hope this helped someone :))
@TheProgSchoolАй бұрын
@@Zyborggian thanks! Obviously you can use extended chords and harmonize that way. I was purposely keeping that example SUPER simple for explanations sake. Maybe I’ll do a follow up lesson delving more into the complex harmony options.

I miss dual harmony guitar on ‘Midnight Tokyo’ Y&T. Or Boston (hitch a ride). Iron Maiden used a lot of dual harmony on melodies ‘the trooper’ many or revelation although NOT as tasty on dual harmony guitar on ‘Forever’ Y&T of course. Dave Murray and Adrian smith are kinda stupid but that’s what you get from intermediate guitar players. Todays standards guitar player like ‘Slash’ are intermediate.. LMAO! Mediocre
