You only let them grow one cycle of beans?? I pick mine, then they re-flower 2-3 more times. So that’s a LOT more beans. I almost had a panic attack when you ripped that plant out of the ground..lol That’s like pulling up a tomato plant after the first round of tomatoes. You’ve probably figured this out by now, since this video is a few seasons ago. God Bless!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
@RainyJo7154 жыл бұрын
Blue Tintin Yes, right? Lol 😂 I’m right in the middle of my bean season right now, and I pick them as much as I possibly can, as with everything in the garden, to tell the plants to keep producing. But also, maybe it’s just me, but I prefer my beans at the 3/4 mark. When they’re grown, but not so big that you could save the beans. Everyone has their own way, which is fine, I just hope that any new gardeners, >see these comments. Lol 😆 Take care..:)

+Army Guy I am retired. We don't make very much money but we are blessed beyond anything money can provide. We don't sell anything from our garden. We give much of it to family, neighbors and a grief recovery support group. Everything we do with our garden and The KZbin channel is for Ministry. We don't monetize our channel at all. Everything is done to minister to folks by helping them get started growing their own food and giving thanks and glory to God. I don't think there is anything wrong with selling produce and making a living. My hat is off to all that do. This is just what we do. ❤️❤️❤️

Had a slight panic moment when you ripped the plant up, my niece did that once when she was helping me "pick the beans" she just ripped the whole plant up and put it in the bucket 🤦 haha. I'm an avid canner and we LOVE our green beans so I can as many as my plants will give me so we can enjoy them through the winter as well.

I want everyone to know that most people pick the beans and then more will come. Also the smaller beans are the more tender beans for steaming...Just delicious! Also when I snap them I just take the tip off the top and bottom and snap the rest. Maybe the frugality comes from coming from a family with seven children :)

+Dolly Perry Thank you Dolly!! You are correct, I should have been more clear on that. The first harvest gives us all we need. A great way to keep your green beans from getting dirty is to apply mulch around the plants. This also works well with other crops such as lettuce and spinach which seem to act as sand magnets as well. If your garden it too big to mulch in it's entirety, just focus on those plants and maybe ones that tend to dry out easily. But if it can be done, mulch the whole dang thing!

@RainyJo7154 жыл бұрын
Julie Fritz I just sautéed a pan of the Bush Stringless tonight, in olive oil, salt, pepper, and a dash of onion powder, so good! But when you go to buy them, just look for the stringless kind. It will say it on the package. Also, if you don’t like them stringy, I’d recommend to not grow them as long as this guy does. You can pick beans at half that size for much better eating. Plus, the more you pick, that tells your plant 🌱 that it needs to grow more, so you’ll get more beans. I’m not sure why he leaves his on until they get big and woody, then pulls the whole plant, instead of growing more? If you don’t pick them, it tells the plant that it’s done, and it’ll start to die off. Same with any other plant, like cucumbers and etc. If you leave a cucumber on the vine until it’s huge and beyond edible, the plant will die off. So in my lifetime of gardening experience, I wouldn’t recommend that. Good luck..:))👍🍀😁

Florida gardening is a tough nut to crack. Between the bugs and the months of continuous intense heat, it's nothing like what you may have experienced up north. Plus the sandy soil will need a lot of work getting it up to where it needs to be. If I may ask, where in Florida are you planning to move?

New gardener here. What do you do in a case like this where you get too much rain? I'm in Alabama and so far we are having a very wet 2018 February. It can change on a dime of course but if the growing season continues like this, is there any practical solution? Or are you just stuck with a bad harvest for that year? I'm so excited to try all the ideas I'm getting from your videos, but am really getting worried about the too much rain possible problem. I saw your video about the potatoes being too wet as well so it seems too much water is a big deal to avoid if you want healthy plants and harvest.

Would you get more green beans per plant if you grew them vertically?
@HollisNancysHomestead4 жыл бұрын
These are bush beans. You can get multiple harvest from each plant. You can also grow a variety that climbs on a trellis and get several harvest. IMHO you can get more from the trellis than you can from the bush bean varieties
@patdthomas7 жыл бұрын
I usually plant pole beans because there's nothing worse for your back than bending over and harvesting a twenty foot row of bush beans. I always felt too guilty to just pull out the entire plant, but doing so makes perfect sense now. Besides saving your back, any second or third harvest from these plants will be only a fraction as productive as the first. So why even bother? You got enough from one picking to last for months.
@HollisNancysHomestead7 жыл бұрын
+patdthomas That's the way we look at it too. We also let some of the beans mature before we harvest because we shell them. Nancy makes some real tasty Korean dishes with the mature beans. We snap the younger ones. We have enough beans for us for a year and plenty to share with Nancys family and neighbors.
