1. Your ready position and timng with a split step 0:24 2. Compact swing both side, you're ready to go forward to meet the ball, you're ready to cut off the angle 6:00 3. Your intention on the return 10:27 Thank you, Simon, for this video. Step number one worked for me amazingly. I've just restated tennis recently after two decades of absence (and I was a poor player before that period). In a single day, at first I could not even move at all against fast serves. Then I remembered about split step. In just one hour, I was able to return fast serves quite hard with my forehand and even backhand as well. I was just surprised that such a simple trick, which I had never noticed its existence, can make this big change in a short time.

Great suggestion to focus on your intention with the return. Too often, I feel defensive or even passive waiting for a serve. Driving and approaching on a second serve is a great idea. My volley is nothing special, but it can make my opponent doubt himself and try for too much on his next shot!

This is such a good video. While I was playing singles yesterday my coach was watching and told me to follow through on my returns. I often forget to follow through, catch the racket etc and this noticeably affects my game. Him picking up on it brought it to the front of my mind yesterday and so when I was going through my emails just now and spotted your one about this video I just had to have a look! Perfect timing. So now I have seen this I have an action plan, and by improving my return of serve I may also, by association, remember to follow through on all my groundstrokes! Thank you Simon and Alex X

@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Update: I've had huge success implementing that on return and rally. I just keep in my mind "predict and prepare". I try to do the unit turn as early as possible, as soon as i see where the ball is going. I'm finally returning those heavy fast balls back aggressively. And returning a lot more first serves. I'd love to see a little more on intricacies of approach. I tend to struggle approaching on a mediocre slice. That one that stays only somewhat low and around the service line... where there isn't a clear answer to deciding whether to approach with topspin or slice. I can never seem to approach aggressively enough to get that easy volley. And i get that dead shot quite frequently.

Hi Simon, great lesson as usual. The. Only thing is, even if you explained why it's convenient for you to hold the racket with the fh grip, the vast majority of times I have to return from my bh side. So, as far as I see it, it's almost pointless to having to change grip almost all the time, while it's much more convenient to prepare the return with the bh grip, which is right 90% of times. Thank you.
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial5 жыл бұрын
In those cases, where you return 90% of the time with your backhand, it makes more sense to stay with your backhand grip. The question is, why are you returning 90% of the time with a backhand? There are ways to force your opponent to serve into your forehand side

wooooow this is massive to me.. my tennis story in a few words: im righty but playing as a lefty, i had a really good adapting phase (thanks God) but i had some trouble changing grips (specially when i have to do a fast switching, continental to semi-western, when the opponent is at the net for ex and misses a good volley, opening a good chance for me to pass with forehand, i hit slice again because of that lack of agility). So, I started returning serves very good but using a semi-western grip , holding the racket as semi-western position.. a friend of mine told me to return holding continental grip (to practice this grip switch agility that i need) but i thought the right was a backhand grip, using continental grip, not semi-western as you told! I didn't even think this was possible (i have only 1.6y of tennis but i work hard/research, so i'm at good level already). I'm not questioning the tennis knowledge you have (love your channel and skills) but are you sure players returns are using semi-western grip on dominant hand even with continental position? this is a massive change to me! ty, cheers from brazil.. i love your content!
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial4 жыл бұрын

@Vancky-G4 жыл бұрын
Hi Simon, when you say forehand grip, do you mean any type of grip (i.e. the one the player is having) or would you suggest it to be either continental, semi-western, etc.? My thinking is that if the forehand grip is too much rotated (e.g. western), it would take more effort to adjust it for the backhand return and potentially cause miss hits. Happy to hear you thoughts and keep up with the amazing videos!
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial4 жыл бұрын
All forehand grips. With the backhand, you can use the top hand to help change grips, can’t do that on the forehand

Hi Simon, superb n very sensible and easy demonstration of the rotating the body concept with short swing. One thing i would like to know. Does it help if u predetermine your return to the corners near the baseline and really attempt it while facing a good server. Or we just focus to keep the ball in play?
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial5 жыл бұрын
It would certainly help if you have a target in mind for both your forehand and backhand returns. That way, wherever the ball goes, you're already set up mentally with a target in mind, so executing it becomes much easier. Thanks for watching! Great explanation how a perfect step one should look like... a club player struggles more often with his backhand return. No ideal situation. Barely if any splitstep.all kinds of horror technical. All players play their serve to backhand. If they can't return a serve with their backhand I tell them to grip the backhand grip. I solved their problem in the now, taking it from there. After they get a feel for it. I try transfer to continental grip. I want those swings short & controlled. The final step comes with the confidence of knowing they have two other options if the perfect textbook one fails. Mainly because timing a very fast serve if you aren't used to it, is hard to do. Simplifying things helps. Their are no points redrawn for not doing it textbook. Coaches / trainer don't learn you play the most easy way. We learn them the most effective way so they can win matches. My reality is when I would only be satisfied with perfect execution, I would have a horrible job. They all play at very low level barely above beginners. More often then not the beginners become the strongest players in my club. Also I am dutch, english is not my first language. We as a people tend to be more direct in conversation.

All misconceptions about net play in dubbels specially lane covering I gets too much attention. You only have to cover the lane is heard all over the world it seems. Making dubbels a very static game. Very it doesn't have to be. I teach from the start defensive & offensive position they should try to move between them covering the angles of the other net player. It is very basic stuff but very important. Doing it right can improve their game drastically without even touching their techniques

Thanks for a great lesson on returning of serve. My problem is that sometimes I am choking when I serve. I get so nervous with the thought that I would toss the ball so bad because I keep bending my elbow. My toss would go all over the places, and my serve is either out or very soft. Can you help me?

@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial really great tutorials. Perhaps a video detailing the stages of learning. Perhaps what your priorities should be as you progress from novice to pro level.

I really like the hybrid grip setup for the 2hbh. Felt strange at first but I was so ready on either wing--one less thing to think about!

@9:15, you show Andre Agassi returning serve, but his racket tip points straight back. It's not a full take back, but I think it shows a slight contradiction in what you are saying. I think it would be better to find another video showing a more truncated back swing in this case but the concepts are well explained I think.

Hi...thanks for the video...very useful ...my question is...how do I have to resolve in the net after I hit an attack ball...then you go to the net...and? This is not a easy matter to resolve ...how must I hit the ball? Short? Long? Crossed? Thanks

Hi Simon, I see in ready position, all tennis pros hold their rackets with the racket frame perpendicular to the ground, the racket face the side fence. If I close the racket face , let the racket face the ground, does it matter?
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial5 жыл бұрын
Do you mean on the return? On the return, you don't have much time to prepare for either side, that's why the pros wait with the racket in a neutral position, ready to go to the forehand or backhand

As everyone else has said, great video! Quick question: should one not try to get into a power position during returns-especially off big serves? Looks like the only who does so in the clips in this video is RF! Other clips of Djokovic also show no power position on return forehands. Thanks in advance.
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial5 жыл бұрын
Hi Victor On fast serves, you simply don't have time to get into the power position. When returning bigger serves, you want to feel like you're taking a minimum backswing. Thanks for watching. Are there any videos you'd like to see from us in the near future? All the best Simon

@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Thanks much for this answer. Makes complete sense. Would it be possible to see a running forehand tutorial from you, please? My footwork after the shot is ok, but how best to achieve balance during the shot to create enough drive behind it is my biggest issue. Many thanks in advance! You're the best.

Thanks, Simon. What about for a slice/chip return? Are you still starting from the ready position using a forehand grip? Then, after the serve has been hit changing to a continental grip when you decide the chip/slice return?
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial5 жыл бұрын
If I'm planning to slice or chip the return then I would wait in the continental grip, however, if I'm reacting to a great serve and need to slice then I would have been waiting in my forehand grip and would then change as the balls on its way.
