Can I just express how grateful I am here? Thank you so much, sir. I just tried out your advice and realized why I never seemed to be able to do the round kick and hook kick. Another video of yours helped my left side kick too. I'd been slightly anxious for the last few months, trying to pay attention to any muscle imbalances, posture differences, anything, and I really failed to identify what my right was doing that my left was not... you helped that. Seriously, thank you so, so much.

I have injury when I first started practicing martial arts. The problem I found was I couldn't do a proper round kick the way they wanted me to. But after watching one of your videos you gave me the best answer I could hope for and it was to do the round kick that's best suited for you. Since then I have found the best way to do a round kick without reaggravated my injury thank you sir.

A great video as always,full of knowledge & humor. But that's pretty much expected from you now. So thank very much for another useful tip. Keep it up good sir... :) Now since we're on the topic of hook kicks, I would like to ask a question about it. It's about the timing of the actual hook. You see when I hook kick, I throw out my kicking leg like a side kick (but, of course, to my opponent's side rather throwing it straight at him) from the chambered position. From there then, I let my leg travel towards my target for a little while still keeping it pretty much straight. Now when I'm about to strike my target, with a few more inches to go, I begin to hook my lower leg with almost an snap so that it travels faster than my upper leg. And even after the impact I try to hook through my target, if you know what mean. And just like that I get a nice powerful hook kick.(Of course all the afore mentioned steps happen in just a split second, but that's pretty much the order in which I do 'em.) However I still have doubt about my timing of the actual hook. Doesn't matter much when kicking in the air. But while hitting a solid target I become conscious of it. Am I hooking too late? Should I start to hook from the moment I shoot out my leg to side of the target (like you did in the video). Or is it too early? Should keep my leg straight (well mostly anyway, as I'm aware about possible hyper extension of the knee) till the impact and then hook through? I'm eager to know what you think Sensei. That is if you have the patience & time to read my whole question first. :P Sorry it got so long. And thank you again Sensei... :)
@AndoMierzwa8 жыл бұрын
Hi Akash! It sounds like you're doing everything right. I didn't talk about adding power, but sure, finding the sweet spot between JUST pulling back your foot and swinging a straight leg makes the kick stronger. So, the kick is fine... the issue is timing. The question may be HOW you're setting up the hook kick. No matter how you throw it, if the other guy sees it coming, you'll miss. So, I'd focus on the moves you make BEFORE the kick. That's my first thought anyway! :)
@akashneelim87738 жыл бұрын
Thank you Sensei- 1) for answering & 2) for actually reading my looong comment.... :P As for setting it up, I don't think I've ever used the hook kick by itself in sparring and/or competition. Always used it as a part of a combination. I like this kick because I believe it to be the sneakiest kick of 'em all. A proper setup & it lands more often than not....

Reminds me that the roundhouse (you call it round kick) was one of the most difficult to break boards with. It's more a matter of coordination with the feet. Normally, you hit with the flat front part of the foot. Doing a board break, you have to pull your toes back and hit with the ball of your foot, which is really, really physically awkward. I remember testing (I want to say it was the test to get Green Belt (7th Kup)) and it the was the one I had the most trouble with and I almost failed the test because of it.
@AndoMierzwa4 жыл бұрын
Right! Wearing shoes makes things a lot easier! :)
@Bansheexero4 жыл бұрын
@@AndoMierzwa Never liked to use shoes when training. Initially, my instructor did not allow them, but after about 10 years, he started allowing it. I tried with my fencing shoes once, since they are super light, almost like slippers. Of course, the downside is that part of the design that makes fencing shoes be fencing shoes is that the heel is cut off and turned into a much rounder heel, allowing the foot to roll along it (again, footwork is a very, very important thing in fencing). Because of this, they wound up stepping on my pants a lot, so I removed said shoes and continued barefoot. I think the shoe thing may have come from the standardized rulings from the Kukkiwon. You mentioned training in ITF. In WTF, the Kukkiwon is the primary governing body of the style, which determines prerequisites for advancement, alterations in technique (my forms tend to use the older style techniques, because I find them more expressive. Interestingly, it was not sparring that got me into TKD, but forms, I thought they looked pretty. I started at age 4, two years prior to being bullied). The Kukkiwon made several rulings around the time he switched, another one was a reduction of the academic requirements used in Black Belt testing (used to have know every single command and response in Korean) and removed at least 8, if not 11 forms (the Taeguk forms remained, but they removed the Palgwe ones, and I'm not sure where they stood on the Kicho forms, I just know my instructor stopped teaching them). Of course, a lot of it could have also been that my instructor became much more laid back after the births of his children. He used to do the whole striking you with shinai as motivation thing (when he recalled it, he was quite sad and regretful). He also changed the hanging heavy bags to the water based ones (I guess less risk of getting hit by a swinging bag). I still get confused as to why 50 lb heavy bags are a thing. I started on a 100 lb bag when I was 4 (and due to my height, I would strike the bottom of the bag, where the most mass was concentrated). The Kukkiwon also seemed to have removed one-step and self-defense demonstration as well. The latter was sort of moot for me, as I had to deal with a relatively hostile environment being ganged up on all the time at school and living with my one cousin who has Borderline Personality Disorder, who would attack me with knives every now and then. I could just react instinctively and generate different maneuvers on the fly. It was one of the reasons my instructor did not have me do the one drill where he would blindfold one person and have other students initiate grabs and such for them to react to. I've had enough difficulty controlling my strength already and had two freak accidents where I crippled two people. The first was a girl (roughly my age, we went to high school together) who I was demonstrating sweep techniques. I would catch her before she impacted the ground but after she started free fall. It went fine the first 4 or 5 times. Then as I did, she started laughing, and I asked what she was laughing at. Her face twisted into horrific pain and I let her go softly to the ground to get out of the way as my instructor stepped in. Apparently, her leg locked and turned in an unexpected way, twisting her kneecap 90 degrees. My instructor was able to reset it, but I tore her MCL. That face is still burned into my mind. The other one was I underestimated my reflexes. My first time I held a board for another to break, I made the mistake at looking at the woman, and while I did not block or counter, my body reflexively flinched. She hit the board and landed wrong (jump side kick), and tore her ACL.

Hello Ando, I must thank you for I had a lot of problems with my round kicks and hook kicks. I was thinking in my hips instead of feeling in my knees :) the front kick vision made it so simple for me! As for the elbows, better down than not around! ;)

"walk off like a boss" i got that part mastered Ando
@AndoMierzwa7 жыл бұрын
Ha! It's important, right?
@puentenyc7 жыл бұрын
its soooo important. if you aint a boss, you re nothing but a manager. boo so i tried my hand at the punching bag today. i can punch. solidly. and i fancy going no gloves. but when it comes to kicking Ando... eesh. i look like a 1 legged flamingo attempting to... do something. i tried your advice on practicing the pivot. i don't know dude. whats a good timetable for me to see improvement? i can keep at this. just need a plan. what do you think? 10 minutes every tother day practice pivoting the foot. plus another 10 trying to look like a 1 legged flamingo? then walk off like a boss?
@AndoMierzwa7 жыл бұрын
Yes, always walk off like a boss! :) I can't say how long it will take for you to feel awesome about your kicks. But I do know that the only way to get there is practice. Daily is best... even if it's only 10 minutes. Just take it slow and steady. Be a proud flamingo! :)
