Why would you even wrap the strap that close to the brake disc? Can't it just be wrapped on the trailer bar?

no way to keep the bracket centered on the axle or to keep it keyed in position when you have quick release axles. Thats good to know, it looks like itll stay centered on standard bike axles though.

I would be curious to know a better solution than using an oversized 3/8” attachment on a skewer that I am sure is not designed to take the potential force of a pull behind

Yours is not a thru axle bike, that is a quick release bike.
