I found this very old VHS tape that goes way back to 1983 on hot rodding VW engines. It was over 4 hours long, so I cut down a bunch of the crap, and left the good info. Here is part 1. I have no idea who these guys are I found this tape in a box of tapes I was given but it has good info in it.

That's Bill Duncan and Dick Nuss. They ran the Madness gasser. Bill worked for Bill Taylor and eventually bought the company (Tayco) that made really good dual-carb linkage. The video was called How to Hot Rod Your VW Engine.

I use to have an amazing bug and had all my fab done at Racers Choice. I shopped at all those shops mostly at Johnny’s. Wish I’d known these guys back then love their knowledge. Was an amazing time cruising, racing Whittier Blvd and stopping at Naugles or Norms on way home.

What’s cool about this video is I was a teenager 10years after this was made so I remember all these parts in used form at the swap meets before the Internet was around. I pieced together motors with used parts I bought from guys like these guys, desperate to make power while having an income from my movie theater job. I bought worn out race parts and made them work a bit longer in my car, all the neighbors came out to yell at me and my loud 63 bug because I was going to “kill their kids”, hey at least your kids always heard me coming. Funny, now I build exotic Porsche engines so all this VW drag stuff is like kids toys to me today. Notice he really talks up the Mahle pistons & birel cylinders in the beginning- those are Porsche 911 parts. Cool video, thanks for posting!

Back in the late 60s you could get a stock .010 .010 turned crank for 12.50$ and they had crank kit with rods and bearings and gaskets 37.50$ and this was at the dealer!!!!

I took out all the adverts in the video as they are probably no longer relevant. I don't know if these guys are around now, if they are they will be pretty old today. It's great info, too good to leave confined to an old VHS tape that is deteriorating.

Google is spying. I have a better one. Was at the mother in-laws place. Wife had taken her some soup she made in her instant pot. We were taking about all the great stuff she has made in it. No sooner than we were talking about it and I get ads for instant pot and instant pot recipe books. Creepy wouldn't you say.

Great choice. I had one. Rod choice is key. Mine had overly worked stock rods. And that's why it failed. But for a street car? It was a wicked beast! I really miss that 67 Bug.

Lot's of green/purple colors. Is it because of a weak chroma signal? :)

This was a 33 year old VHS tape that is probably a 3rd generation minimum.Even when it was new it probably didn't look that great but sitting for all those years has resulted in signal degradation big time. I had to run it through a TBC / frame store just to get it to capture. When I tried to play it on my TV directly it was bending severely at the top.

It's mostly due to the poor color accuracy of consumer-grade single-tube video cameras back in the day -- Vidicon tubes had problems with color fringing and it got even worse in low light. (Adding some movie lights to the set would've made a huge improvement in the quality of this video.) Add to that the color bleed and generational loss caused by the video being recorded, edited, and distributed on VHS, and the result is the mess you see here.

That's exactly why I used a 3 tube and then 3CCD camera on my professional work. When clients questioned why I was charging 2,500.00 to shoot their wedding and my competition 1000, I would put out a copy from the competition, and put out one of my copies and play them. Then I would say "Any questions?"I shot on Beta 1, and Umatic, then Betacam and Hi8 before making the transition to professional DV, and then finially HDV before throwing in the towel and admitting defeat. By that time consumer gear had gotten pretty close to professional, and I was not going to compete with the youngsters that would go out all day for 500.00.

Can't do much about that. Was shot over 35 years ago on crappy home video, edited to crappy home video, and then copies sold on crappy home video. So the source tape is 3rd generation VHS, what do you expect.

@Handsome White Devil We have people now that were born after VHS and they don't appreciate what those of us old enough to remember the quality and how fast it degrades even after a single copy. I ignore these idiots as I really don't give a shit. That's why I don't have an ulcer because I know when to not give a shit and this is one of those moments. My favorite saying, too bad so sad is my favorite saying. My son drops his new phone and shatters the screen. My reaction, too bad so sad. As if he thought I was going to say "that's ok, let's run down to the store and drop 1000 on s new one" nope not happening. Because I just dont give a shit. Next time he will be more careful. A friends daughter dropped their new iPhone in the toilet and they rushed out and bought them a new one. Wouldn't happen in my house. Now the kids are grown up mine are the responsible ones with full time jobs. My friends kid now in her 20s can't go out of the house because she had been sheltered all her life and the world is such a scary place.
