Spraying the product takes longer due to drying between coats. How much you want to mask dictates overall clean up time. any light overspray can be wiped off. Any thick overspray can be peeled off. If you like this kind of DIY stuff, it can all be done in one day no problem. People Plasti Dip entire cars. I haven't done that.

It looks great! How is it holding up? I want to black out my chrome front grill, window trim, and maybe my emblems as well on my 2018 Accord. Trying to decide between this and Plastidip - I want to keep it as budget friendly as possible and I don’t know if shelling out a bit more money for the same result is worth it. What do you think is better, Plastidip or the Hyperdip? Thanks for making this video and I hope all is well with you.
@Donslife3 жыл бұрын
I haven't had any issues with adhesion or the look of the finish. Plasti Dip is a good choice, it is a little more forgiving to apply and more readily available at local stores. However, the finish is a little dull compared to Hyperdip. I have plasti dip on the wheels and a little wipe of tire shine glosses it up, but then makes dust stick a little more. I would recommend buying a can of either product to practice on the emblems first. Then once you are familiar with how the process goes, you'll avoid mistakes on the trim. Trim could be tricky to peel depending how your weatherstripping is designed. For the Cadillac, I was lucky there was a hard edge (like and emblem) that the product laid onto thinner, allowing it to rip in that spot as I peeled very slowly

@Donslife3 жыл бұрын
It is possible to scratch it. Normal environmental things like heavy rain, snow, mud, bugs don’t seem to harm it. It is a low cost coating that can be peeled off and redone if it did scratch. My wife curbed a wheel with dip on it. It peeled it off in that spot, so I sanded the rim smooth and redid the dip on it.
@shyshy8083 жыл бұрын
Absolutely beautiful but how long does it last? Can it last through car washes and detailing? In extreme heat and cold?
@Donslife3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I answer this question a lot. The product is from south Florida so if done right, it should resist heat. Applying it in high humidity can lead to adhesion problems. I live in Canada and I haven’t had any issues with -40°F and as for extreme heat, we only get up to 90°F where I live. I have used it on items that I wanted to customize temporarily. As long as the preparation is done well, it should last. If you have a spot get damaged by a rock or something, it can be repaired by peeling it off and redoing and is inexpensive. Good option for a leased vehicle too. I recommend proper automotive paint and clear coat for anything you know you want to be more permanent.

From the video images, it looks like the finish I want. Thanks. PS-- How durable is this product ??? Will it eventually wear off or is it permanent ???
@Donslife3 жыл бұрын
The final finish of ‘shadow black’ is mostly satin. They make others like piano black, metallic and gloss too. It is more of a peelable paint so it won’t wreck anything by accidentally overspraying it. I personally have only tried it on wheels, grills, emblems and window trim. I don’t know how well it would work on plastic moldings that have a texture. Assuming you could degrease it and clean it well, it might work. It might be best to try Plasti Dip first (cheaper) as a test. If it works well, but the then peel it off and go with the color / finish you want with hyper dip. The longest I have had Plasti dip is 7+ years on my inner grill and emblems on a 2013 gmc sierra denali. Sold it a few months ago, all still intact. Bugs didn’t wreck the grill finish either. Remember Hyperdip is newer and intended more for automotive so it should be just as good if not better than Plasti Dip. I only use these products when I want a temporary color change and when I want it back to stock, I can peel it off or the next owner can if I sell.

@@Donslife Thanks so much for the info. I am just looking for a product that will restore the original finish on a few trim pieces as they are not made any longer and junkyard items are in just as bad or worse condition then what I have. Is Plasti Dip permanent or does it also peel off ??? I need a permanent fix. I don't want to try regular spray paint as I don't think it is very flexible for use on soft plastic and would probably crack. Any other product that you would suggest for my needs ????
@Donslife3 жыл бұрын
Plasti Dip is the original peelable product. Hyperdip is just improved for automotive. Either are worth a try and both are flexible I don’t know what these trim pieces look like to give a full opinion
@charleskosyjana12953 жыл бұрын
@@Donslife Thanks !!! I will research them and maybe try on a scrap part to see what results they give. I just want my car to look good again. Its trim is now a mottled, splotched, uneven mess of black, gray and smoky white depending on how much sunlight each part received over its lifetime. I have tried 5 different trim restorers and all they did was make the parts more shiny but did nothing to bring back the original color and wore off after a few weeks.

Do you think it will work on car rims?
@Donslife3 жыл бұрын
I absolutely do! Hyper Dip is made by Plasti Dip specifically to work better for automotive applications. As long as the rims are in good shape and can be cleaned properly, I think the product would work well.

Looks great. My wheels are currently sprayed with the regular black and I'm wondering if it's worth it to switch it to the hyperdip shadow black. I've read that the hyperdip has a much smoother finish. Do you have any experience with regular plasti dip vs hyperdip?
@Donslife3 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris! I have lots and lots of experience with Plasti Dip. Especially in black. The difference with Hyperdip is noticeable and it seems to present itself a little darker and more satin than flat like Plastidip. If you go back a few months on my channel you’ll see a Plastidip removal video for my GMC Sierra Denali using a pressure washer. One important thing to mention: Hyper Dip’s instructions state that it is not compatible with Plastidip, so I recommend starting fresh with whatever you choose. I decided to give Hyperdip a shot since claims to be better for vehicles. I forgot to mention, the escalade wheels are 4yr old Plastidip and in person look dull compared to the Hyperdip, but time will tell. Consider subscribing if not already! ✌🏼

Assuming that the surface was prepped properly and the conditions were correct (low humidity) the pressure washer shouldn’t hurt it. I made a video ‘Hyperdip vs carwash.” Check it out.

Everything nearby is fine. It is peel-able and just wipes off unless you build up lots of coats. If it would have caused damage, I would have moved them out. The other vehicles didn’t get overspray

Can you use a glossifier on top or the 2k high gloss if you wanted the trim finish to match the rest of the black on the Cadillac?
@Donslife3 жыл бұрын
Glossifier product is NOT compatible with Hyperdip according to the manufacturer. I couldn’t find any info on the 2K high gloss compatibility. Therefore, I am going to assume it is NOT compatible either based on both products being complimentary to Plastidip. Would’ve been a nice option though.
@jonathanmolina35293 жыл бұрын
You don't need it. DYC now has a gloss black hyperdip, no need for glossifier
@Mostviews1113 жыл бұрын
Why didn't you just take the trim off you'll never be able to seal those edges. On top of that you didn't rough up the surface so none of that is going to stick long term. Also two different blacks looks like crap especially that grill.
@Donslife3 жыл бұрын
I appreciate the feedback, however that is the point of how to use this product. The whole point is not to sand the surface, no primers, no clear coat - nothing permanent and you can change back to the old color within minutes. I recommend going to dipyourcar.com and checking out how the products work. This isn't paint, which is the whole point of the demonstration. As for the final look of the parts, I respectfully disagree and think it looks good. If I get tired of it, I can peel it off.

I have a question. I want to do my front grill, chrome window trims, decals/badging, and rims on my Honda Accord. How many cans do you think I would need?
@Donslife3 жыл бұрын
Hey Jman, Wheels usually use 1 can each. I used almost 4 on the Cadillac Grill, window trim and badges. 8 total would do all of it. You might be able to get it done with 6 or 7 since an accord has smaller pieces (like the grill). I hope that helps!
@jmang50893 жыл бұрын
@@Donslife Sweet thank you! I saw some other videos and tried to guess the amount myself. I was only going to buy 3 hahaha

@@jmang5089 Trust me, to little is the worst. You end up doing less coats out of panic. Then the project won’t turn out quite right. Having extra never hurts and you then have some if you scratch your dipped wheel or grill for any touch ups. The website I shared has wheel kits. I might be ordering one soon for my wheels and making a video. I can’t handle the stock colors and I am not ready to go buy new wheels yet.

@@Donslife Thanks so much for the advice! I totally agree about the rims. I can’t afford to drop 400ish on a set, especially because I’m just leasing, but the stock rims look terrible. Another question as long as you’re here, how do you tape around the emblems on the rims? An exacto knife? I’m worried I won’t get it right with my rims being that it is a small, round Honda emblem.
@Donslife3 жыл бұрын
@@jmang5089 excellent question. For those tiny Honda emblems (I assume they are mostly flat), careful use of a knife just cutting part way through the dried coating might work. You might have to cut as you peel too keeping the blade almost touching the emblem. Or just leave them covered, it might be a good look? Good Luck!
