I feel like of all the Mandarin tutors on YT right now, ShuoShuo is absolutely destroying the competition in the "subtle yet dark humor" category. It's like she has this deep wellspring of dark/sexual humor, and every so often she will let it see the light of day in her videos....
@kondaniriche83724 жыл бұрын
I personally learn a lot from her videos. I love her she teaches me new expressions ! Are you a student of Mandarin ?
@peters86994 жыл бұрын
@@kondaniriche8372 Yep, been at it for a few years now. My best tip would be throw away the textbooks as soon as possible and start watching at least 2-3 hours of mandarin content on YT (or listening to podcasts) every day. If you do that for at least 6 months, you will see massive improvements. Videos like the ones ShuoShuo makes are helpful, but think of them as at best supplementary. For example, all the examples she lists in this video, I've already learned just by listening to lots of content and organically coming across them again and again. Input is the key factor!
@jmarker354 жыл бұрын
@@peters8699 That is some very good advice! You definitely need to know some basics in order 'to get to first base' with ShuoShuo! I would also recommend Yi Zhao's learning videos. Can you list some elementary podcasts, because I have trouble catching words and phrases.
@peters86994 жыл бұрын
@@jmarker35 听故事学中文is a great one for beginners, they go through stories in mandarin and then go back and explain the vocal, but do so in mandarin. Also they speak at a moderate pace, so it's a great podcast for beginners
@peters86994 жыл бұрын
@@jmarker35 You can also watch (on YT) 世界青年说 and 二分之一强 as well, as those shows are mostly foreigners speaking fairly decent mandarin, so while it's not great training for your accent, it IS a great stepping stone to get into 100%, normal speed, native content. If you watch at least 100 hours of those shows, you'll be impressed at how effortlessly you improve.

A lot of language resources I've used over the years (and for various different languages), most teachers try and avoid topics that are more mature and less "appropriate", and I've always found it really frustrating to search for genuine explanations of the spoken language I was hearing. People say things that aren't appropriate all the time! People curse, people say dirty jokes and innuendos! So I'm really, really glad that you're taking the time and effort to explain these kinds of words and expressions. I feel like the Mandarin that I'm learning from you is so much more human and realistic :)

Such a terrific lesson! I'm so glad I found your channel. If you don't mind a friendly observation, at 4:19 you use 'exchangeable', but 'interchangeable' is better. 'Exchange' means trade, while 'interchange' means replace. Also, when you describe yourself as 'polite', a better word might be 'refined', whereas someone who would use bad language inappropriately would be described as 'coarse'. I only tell you because your command of English is so impressive that it suggests you would be interested in such details.

I don't know if the meaning of diao has changed, but I knew a couple of Chinese kids from south china who used diao a lot. This was over a decade ago. It means F--k and is used 100% like the English word, except not for the "awesome, great" part. Only sexual or offensive, the negative meanings. It was borrowed from Cantonese, which uses it exactly the same way. I don't know where the positive spin comes from. It's about as crude as the F word and gets bleeped on television in Hong Kong, much like the F word is bleeped in the US. So YMMV when using it. Watch who you use it around.
