Excellent thank you! Might have asked this in another one of your videos - where in this chain would you throw in the noise reduction, and once or twice? We should use our ears, but what's good practice? Use-case: voiceover with a good USB mic (Rode) with unfortunately little gain in a well-treated space. Appreciate it. 👍
@MikeRussell Жыл бұрын
Ideally you wouldn't use noise reduction at all as any noise reduction is going to reduce the quality of the audio. If you have to use it then you want to use it at the start before processing. There are two schools of thought on this, some say use it once, others say run two passes with lower reduction.

Hello Mike Russell. May I say THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! I have a Pro sound man who sets up my sound in my closet/booth for my different mics. I moved a while ago and he couldn't seem to get it 100%. It was definitely good enough to put out broadcast quality, but something was missing. It just didn't have the punch. I stumbled upon one of your vids about your ENCN and I totally absorbed the video. I have figured out that If I apply the ENCN after my sound setup, IT FREAKIN ROCKS IT!!! It now has that punch that I am lacking. But for some reason that I can't figure out, I can not save my history of these settings. I have tried to find a solution on KZbin but can't find one. I would really like to have these four settings on a hotkey but get a message stating that history can't be saved. If you can help me can you send me a note at joewieseavoicetalent@gmail.com? I would really appreciate it. Thanks again!!!

Hi, thanks for the compliment. At this point in time the sometimes unnatural sound of text to speech is a limitation of the technology. What you can do is to try and work with changing the rhythm of the speech by inserting or reducing space between words to try and create a more natural flow.

Great stuff Mike, question, why do you use the top menu drop-downs and not the Effects Rack workflow on these? Just curious the ins and outs of what you show vs the ER workflow... also, I noticed that some of the effects are NOT in the ER, so is that why? Is it because you don't have to apply, they just do when used from the top menu? Just a student looking to learn... Cheers.

So where would things like noise reduction and restoration techniques fit into this process, for example if I am running a noise suppressor plugin?
@MikeRussell3 жыл бұрын
The idea is that these wouldn’t be needed by getting a decent quality recording. The use of any noise reduction technique degrades the quality of the audio. If they absolutely must be used then they would go at the start of the process.

@heyyojojo79394 жыл бұрын
You shouldnt. This is overprocessing and will kill the listeners ears. Dont make your oisteners ears bleed! This is for radio imaging. For narration and podcast you want some light EQ, then light compression, and normalize. This is way to harsh for anything like a podcast or narration.
@MikeRussell4 жыл бұрын
Podcast processing and imaging processing are two very different things. You can process the heck out of imaging as it's supposed to sound loud, powerful and crunchy, but a podcast should be processed much lighter so it retains a natural sound. Remember, radio imaging only last seconds, heavily processed it won't cause people to turn off but if you process your podcast too heavily people will turn off. Can you explain why you normalize to 0.1? I have always been told to normal to -3 for voice over
@MikeRussell2 жыл бұрын
Back in the old days I would have normalised to -3db but modern day 32 bit floating point tech allows for digital distortion to be easily repaired so you can normalise to any figure that's under 0db knowing if you're working in 32 bit floating point you won't create irreparable distortion.
