Excellent tutorial, thanks for posting. My DC05 is 25 years old and I never replaced the bottom filter or washed out the honeycomb or chamber! I wondered why it had lost suction just recently! So going to give it a good refurb now! Cheers.

Please advise people, that after washing parts, be sure they are bone dry before re-assembling. Apart from dealing with the dust, I find cleaning vac parts very satisfying when I put it all back together, knowing the advantage of removing all that excess crap that was trapped in it and impeding it's performance.

I never realised there was a bottom filter until I watched this video! I have no problems with suction power, but have never been able to clean out the bottom of the dust bin. The inner part seems to be glued in place, yet you were able to remove it easily. Is there a knack to this, or were the older ones fixed in place?

Where can one get or make a replacement hose for this vac.??? Or is one doomed to anti-Friday's for Future activity i.e. throw the old vac. out and get a new one???

Is there a trick to taking out the inner bin part? I have given mine a good tug and it doesn't want to come out! I'd love to get the whole bin as clean as you have, but the key seems to be getting that inner part out. Also I note that the instruction manual actually specifically says not to remove it when cleaning the bin?

I was shown by a Dyson services agent how to clean this inner bin. You have to grip tightly on one side and PULL. It clicks back into place. Look for the grooves so that you ca put it back properly.

My DC05 is 17 years old. I have just completely overhauled it. The cable was badly damaged where it leaves the reel. This was repaired by dismantling the cable rewind and chopping off about 15cm of cable then rewiring it. I have replaced the filters and cleaned every part of the machine completely. As it was apart I replaced the brushes but it didn’t really need them; they were only half worn. It seems to be running hot but I am not sure how hot its normal running temperature is. It is sucking very hard and there seems to be an awful lot of airflow through the machine so I’m not overly worried. Does anyone know if carbon brushes have a bedding-in period that can cause unusual phenomena?

Does anyone know if carbon brushes have a bedding-in period that can cause unusual phenomena? Yes. The lack of contact between the new carbon brushes and the commutator could be sparky, as a strong electrical current cannot (but wants to) get through to the motor. Poor electrical contact will always generate heat. And make sure you have the brushes inserted the right way around. Brushes usually don't connect with the commutator in a perpendicular angle.

What did you do about the hose? Mine broke at the top & I can't find a replacement. Suitable subs???

@@melvinkeithful Hi. The hose is fine. However I had to replace the telescopic metal tube. I found a replacement tube but for a slightly more modern model, I think. The thin grey piece of plastic (where the yellow locking catch on the curved end of the hose clips in) was broken. It wasn’t cheap, about €100. But the hose itself is OK.
