How to improve your academic writing

This has been the most helpful advice I’ve ever received as I struggle a lot with writing,. I wish I knew this years ago when I started my PhD but implementing it now as I work on my dissertation. Thank you so very much this deserves way more views.

I also used AI as an outlining tool: I have a subject. here is an outline with a few connections. I want to change the outline so it would have more emphasis on tech and less on bio. It makes suggestions, I comment, it corrects, and so on, until I am happy with the result or found enough elements I like and dislike to define for myself something that I am happy with. I can also use it as a wiki substitute - general idea of concepts, not a reliable source. I used it once to find a specific value, so I can continue my thought process without being bothered by small details. I jot down that the number came from chat gpt and refer to it as a place holder.

Thank you so much for the very useful workshop! My PhD is in Social Sciences, and I am having some trouble in the quality of the text I produce: that's how I've found this video. As you said, I've been fairly good until now, but on a PhD things are on a whole different level! My research theme isn't very developed: few works and most of them aren't even focused or well structured. So when I started writing I kind of noticed I also have difficulties and lack research writing skills/strategies. My supervisor doesn't have the time to micromanage my writing (which is understandable) and my institution doesn't have any instrument to help students improve their writing skills. What strategy do you recommend to organize the literature review and frame the structure of the paper/chapter?
