In this video tutorial, I explain a few simple steps to drawing the human figure quickly and consistently. I show you a method that I use to draw the body by first placing the larger forms, then adding the limbs. I find that if you first draw the head, torso, and pelvis the rest of the process becomes pretty easy to do. I also show you why this method will simplify drawing the human body in perspective as well. I hope you find this video helpful and if you do then please like, share, and subscribe for new videos each week. I also have a Patreon page to help fund the production of these videos. Thanks for watching!

"It leads me to think one thing, and that is: you're not practicing enough." I've been sitting here lamenting about how I never get better but I can't even remember the last time I seriously took a pencil and TRIED. I keep being sad at why I'm not good when I could be spending that time getting BETTER. Then I started looking up videos thinking "how do you do that" and then I see this. You called me on it. I needed to hear it. Tire probably never gonna see this, but thank you so much.

I took life drawing classes for years, and my favorite poses for the one minute gesture poses. I feel like that's where I learned the most. Our teacher emphasized them, saying that if you spend hours carefully finishing and shading a pose, but the post is not drawn well, you've wasted your time. He also emphasized the separation of the upper and lower torso segments, (rib cage and pelvis), and the independent movement of each. I always started my figure drawings, even the long ones, by establishing the rib cage and pelvis masses. The head and limbs are just the secondary appendages to that essential mass. Well done!

Thank you very much for sharing Robert. Sounds like you had a great instructor. Those classes are extremely valuable. I think you hit the nail on the head with the 1 minute studies. I also love the idea that you can put down so many poses in a short amount of time. Great way to quickly understand the complexity of the human body. You capture the flow and energy of the body and don't get lost in all the details. Thanks for watching this channel and more on the way real soon! ;) -Robert

At a younger age I didn’t want to draw guidelines or study I wanted to just draw and somehow make it look like the artist who created the style did it. Obviously now it’s foolish to me and now at age 16 I appreciate guidelines and shapes, I didn’t know how fun it was to draw shapes in perspective until recently. I plan to get somewhat decent this year, and I’ve been pretty consistent because it’s fun and is now a every day all day thing. I don’t have the feeling of having to draw I just get the urge to, and I know that I’m lucky to feel that way. So I plan to not have this sudden motivation go to waste 😄

Thanks, Rob. This is going to sound silly, but I never thought of combining two ellipses, like you did, to form the torso. That was really awesome. I had bought David H. Ross's book, "Freehand Figure Drawing For Illustrators". I try to research a bit about the book before I buy it. But from experience, I don't know if I can use it until after I buy it. But his book is excellent for the mannequin he uses, but he really doesn't cover the structure of each of the cylinder forms, so the reader can replicate it. He does show different angles, but to a real novice who doesn't use backward engineering, it isn't too helpful. I was stuck on his upper torso form until it dawned on me he's combining the shoulder blades with the rib cage. Now watching your video has really streamlined it for me. So, making a long story short, thank you very much Rob!!!!!

Hi, Rob. Thanks, for responding! Yep. Your videos are great. That's why I love watching artists tutorials, because not everybody looks at a solution the same way. And, I mean it, that tip of the torso was fantastic. I kind of thought of it a while back, but I wasn't sure and couldn't get it to work right. After seeing this video, confirmed it. When I'm learning it's tough not knowing, and 95 percent of the time it's hit and miss. When another artist, out of a billiion, happens to cover that same problem. It's like Christmas! Thanks, Rob.

I had felt that I had gotten a decent hold of the basics of anatomy and I did draw some cool stuff... but then I didn't draw anything for a week (while I tried to concentrate on perspective) and then when I tried to draw from imagination, I totally sucked. Awesome video. I love this style of video. I draw with you as you draw. As you said, I am guilty of bypassing the cylindrical foundation of the drawing process ( that's probably just one of the reasons that my gestures suck). I am definitely going to incorporate your method of drawing into my art. Please do more of these gesture type of drawings. It helps a lot to draw with you. Oh yeah, lol at your comment about drawing like a kid. Too funny !

+Sage Samurai Glad you like this type of video! I enjoy doing these studies to share with everyone. It helps me to get better at what I do and share the process at the same time. Your gestures will get better just push out lots of studies and watch the magic happen. :) And glad you like my attempt at some humor! lol

I always start with head first too, I find this way is easier. Because drawing a circle the same size as a square isn't easy. thats why I start with the head(circle) then the body/torso (square/rectangles) because these shapes are easier to make

Robert you’ve inspired me. My dream would to be a comic artist and bring my own ideas to life. Could you imagine drawing for marvel ? I consider myself and intermediate artist who has some bad habits and needs a lot of practice but watching your vids has helped and fueled me at every step especially when I feel down. I know I can do better and if I make in this industry, I’d be honored to consider it a victory we earned together as you’ve help me grow as an artist over the years.

I love when people think they will have some extraordinary painting skills because they use the same brushes as gifted artist. This guy asked me one time if I could draw traditionally at all because he only saw what I did digitally. I asked him if he could play acoustic guitar at all because all he played was electric?

Right that and because someone has more expensive tablets or paint brushes they are better and they can't because they have a tablet with out a screen and have cheaper markers and so on I get mad because it's not what you use it's what you do with it like how come nody gets it? If you take a very good artist a bad cheap laggy ECT ECT tablet they're still going draw good if you hand a new artist the best art supplies money can buy and tell them to draw a 5 star art work it's gonna suck it's just life and nody ever gets it sad really
