Ok - this has to be one of the best videos I've seen so far in 2021. I've been finalizing a mix and this advice literally has opened new worlds for me (the mid/side EQ, multi-band expansion post compression). AMAZING. I sent a new master to the guys in the band and they were raving. Cheers. You guys are great.

Some flaws but overall pretty useful. Really important to get across the need for level matching before the loudness introduction. Also on and comp prior to limiter, the release looks a little long to me. Just saying to a watch out for that.

Tnx alot for your great videos Like always let me ask u a question, Can I use upward compressor instead of expander? For example Waves mv2 or maxvolume? I mean compress the signal from the lowest dbs. Before this question, are those upward compressor and expander at the same category?
@Kambiz.Mahdavi
@Kambiz.Mahdavi 3 жыл бұрын
I really apologise, I have never understood the difference between them!
@sageaudio
@sageaudio 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Kambiz! An expander will amplify the loudest aspects of the signal or the peaks, since it uses a threshold similar/identical to a typical compressor. An upward compressor measures the signal below the peaks, compresses that part of the signal and then amplifies it. Thanks for watching! SageAudio.com

What is the generally accepted dynamic range for a hip hop and pop mix?
@sageaudio
@sageaudio 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Brian - thanks for watching! Typically the signal is pretty compressed with the majority of the dynamics coming from the 808 and high hats to a lesser extent. Some Rap masters are squashed and others are subtle so it's hard to say what that range is - sorry for not being able to provide a concrete answer. SageAudio.com

great stuff guys !! not a big fan of the side filters as a "standard enhancement" move , and if in need i would go with the tilt filter on proQ3 instead . i would like to ask ,do you phase check all the parallel stuff when deciding which plugins to use there? cheers
@sageaudio
@sageaudio 3 жыл бұрын
Hey John! Thanks for watching! In this video we didn't check - but in retrospect probably should have. I'm hearing some widening which means the phase has changed slightly/latency was properly compensated for by Logic. SageAudio.com

Hey man I love your videos... Love the techniques very much... But I feel you're too conservative when doing these Mastering Demos. I notice a very slight 1-3% change in the overall sound and some of the featured plugins I couldn't even hear any difference. or change. And I'm using a good set of headphones (Beyerdynamic) and RME Interface. Cheers and looking forward to your next video.

Hey Ruben! Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Good point - I think it would help to show more aggressive settings let you said, and then maybe scale it back to something more subtle. I'll incorporate that into future videos! SageAudio.com

if you work with an eq in parallel, wouldn't it be better to use the linear phase mode of the eq to avoid phasing issues between the two channels?
@sageaudio
@sageaudio 3 жыл бұрын
The phase changes that are avoided with a linear phase EQ are between the filters in the EQ, not between the routed signals in your DAW. Typically, DAWs compensate for latency caused by routing. Linear phase might be a good option still though! Thanks for watching! SageAudio.com
