From my research I've done (peer reviewed articles). It says that direct neck training is more effective to gain neck size than indirect neck training (deadlifts etc). So doing neck flexion, extension and lateral flexion exercises for your neck is the faster way to developing your neck muscles.

I’m glad you guys actually addressed when the neck harness would be useful. I saw a Chad Wesley Smith video where he was using one, and thought it made sense for MMA or any contact/combat sport. As a soldier, I also deal a lot with the army body composition program, specifically checking soldiers who are above allowable weight to make sure they’re not too fat. One strategy the chronically borderline soldiers fall back on is to try and make their neck bigger. It’s ridiculous.

Why... would a fat guy want an even thicker neck?? Feels like that question bounced off a weird part of these bois' thick, THICC necks. Its dudes with small necks that want to grow them.
@BigUriel4 жыл бұрын
Generally speaking though dudes with really thin necks are really thin everywhere and just need to gain weight overall. It's a bit like forearms, every guy I've ever seen worried about the size of his forearms and doing wrist curls in the gym was just small, while guys who have a decent amount of muscle mass overall usually have decent forearm development without ever doing any wrist curls at all. Will the wrist curls make their forearms bigger? Sure, so will rows and chin ups and those'll make other (probably more important) stuff bigger too. Point being doing neck curls when you weigh 140lbs is missing the forest for the trees.
@shaneduquette3 жыл бұрын
@@BigUriel I disagree. I was 130 pounds with a 14-inch neck. I bulked up to 190 pounds at 11% body fat, gained 13 inches on my shoulders, neck only went up to 0.5 inches. Bulking up overall didn't help. So I added in some neck curls and extensions. Within three months I had added 2 inches to it-a 16-inch normal neck. Problem solved.

If you only used these movements how often should you switch it up and do a different exercise? Example - replacing bench with weighted dips. Any advice helps Also I follow 4 day upper/lower routine

@mojolito5 жыл бұрын
Why the fuck would you ask people who haven't even trained their neck how to train your neck? You have muscles in your neck much like every other body part, that can get bigger by training them. Do neck curls and neck extensions, preferably using a neck harness (but not required), and raise your numbers by progressively overloading (just like any other training). You could easily add a few cm to your circumference within 6 months. However, this doesn't really have any practical use for a powerlifter or strongman, but if you just want to look more masculine and "big", adding size to your neck will give you that impression.

I realize it'd have to be in cases where the neck was component in the motion which allows the brain to be traumatized. But I know a bunch of high school and collegiate athletes that could do with some research based evidence which could guide training programs that might prevent a life altering injury. Thanks man!

James Bill I don't know where your athletic level is at, but whenever I've had to skip gym for more than 2 months, I always drop back in with a 5x5/3x5 routine like Stronglifts or Starting Strength. It's only 3 times a week, you get to build up your strength, confidence and technique from low numbers and it's a nice segway to other programs imo. Hope that helps.
@killswitch11185 жыл бұрын
I have looked into the programs. Just have such an inconsistent schedule it's tough to find my % and stick by it. I also just quit my 3rd job and have more time on my hands so maybe I can dig a little deeper and actually try to apply the principals. I've just always been so up and down with my abilities to lift specific weight. One day I'll pull 405 and the next time I pull I can barely get 315. As an example. I'll look more into it for sure. Thank you
@courtneyhernandez31785 жыл бұрын
You don't need to feel motivated each time. You need to create an obligation to yourself based on an overall goal. Waiting to be motivated to go to the gym is like waiting to be motivated to go to your job.
