Here's how to install the optional factory auxiliary fog light kit for the 2017+ FZ09/MT09. This is a complete plug and play kit with a waterproof bar switch, built in relay and connector for the factory harness. It's not cheap but as of the time of the video, is the only fully matching system to go with the bike. If performance AND looks AND bulletproof install is important to you, the price will be the only gotcha at around $500 for both the light kit and mounting bar needed. Install is very easy at around 30 minutes including aiming. The results won me over! You will need these two part numbers:
BS2854A30000
BS2854A50000
I chose to order them from yamabits.co.uk/ but please google for your best deal including shipping and other charges. If you are in the US you will have to order from outside the country. Thanks Yamaha.

I love those genuine Yamaha parts, well build and purpose made with decent instructions! Installed a radiator protector and crashbars on my '22 Tracer 7 and took me little over an hour taking my time. Now I want to install the fog light kit (BS2-854A3-00-00 ). Its weird because your vid is 5 years old and they still sell the exact same kit for the '22 model Tracer 7. Great explanatory vid btw!!

Excellent review - agree with you on the cost - but it's worth it when it comes to your own safety - would be good if the switch could be ditched and they wired directly into the headlight wiring so we're always on - thanks

Fantastic upgrade and really functional. You're ready to go in the dark now. It's as if it's stock design, so perfection achieved. You're awesome. Hope it's not bothering you when you remember the price 😝 Were you able to share this video with the guy who posted the original video when he goes off the road at a right bend. Adding a personal experience. Coincidentally I have a Yamaha FZ-25 with LED and the total output is just 35w but it's just a bad design with a weak intensity and a low adjuster angle from the factory. Non projected LEDs never do the justice. Anyway, i travel to work mostly at nights and while coming home on a dark street had the loose hanging electrical wires from the tree touch my left side mirror and handlebar, thanks to the LED, i really was about to dash into the high sidewalk wall and a speeding taxi behind me made me really nervous. Luckily i sped up against the cable with a tightening grip after i sensed. Came out with no damage except for left indicator cover break and a loose mirror. Half the indicator was gone (plastic broke due the force but the holding nut saved the other half, really wierd) and only noticed this the next morning. Decided to change it to a halogen and I'm really happy. It's a round headlight with self adjusted beam with customised holding clamps. Glass housing makes it bear the heat output of a 55w Osram Classic bulb. Didn't like to use the older spare Philips Xtreme Vision Plus bulb from my older car. Now I'm almost there where you're. Except i really paid for customising the clamps and not the light itself. So i know the feeling. Just wanted to add this experience after posting sometime back due to similar situation as yours 🤗

Since purchasing my FJ-09 a few months ago, I've wanted to get these (even knowing the cost)...however, I'm wondering if fog/running lights mounted to my GIVI Engine Guard Bars might be a "smarter" idea. Viewing the video, I do see that the Yamaha/PIAA fog lights do add a considerable amount of light over the headlight, alone, but, at the same time, I noticed there's a "problem" when turning. Yes, the amount of light is increased, but the light to the side of turning still doesn't appear to be enough...for example, when the road curves to the left, you can see the center-line, but only slightly more than "barely". With lights mounted to the engine guard bars, the light pattern should be spread over a wider area, plus it would be "stationary" to the forks. Currently, I'm considering two different options: 1) Hi/Lo LEDs, such as something along the lines of the Denali D2 2.0 TriOptic, (can be wired to function directly with the headlight's Hi/Lo switch, or the Hi/Lo can be operated manually/independently of the headlights): 2) SAE-compliant lights with auto Hi/Lo dimming. Personally, I'm leaning towards option #1, but, if anyone has any suggestions, I'll gladly consider them. I'd prefer to keep cost down, if possible, but, at the same time, quality, lumen output, and size (smaller housing is better than larger, again, due to planned engine guard bar mounting) is of somewhat greater importance than price. Besides, there IS a difference between being "low-priced", and just plain "cheap". Cheap is usually indicative of low(er) quality, while low-priced can still be high(er) quality. So, shout out your best suggestions.

I think bikes like this should come with some form of gyroscopic headlights. So the beam stays horizontal even when cornering. If not from the factory then something like these for lights but with a gyro inside to keep the beam flat when cornering would be ideal.

Have you seen any of the Baja Designs S2 pro driver/combo lights? I have played with them on a buddys truck and get that they are spread further apart but wow do they throw a wide pattern that picks up the road well and throws far enough out brighter and farter than my bikes stock lights. By the time you purchase the PIAA light bar and the S2 pro's its still looking at 460.00 for a two light setup but the light output is without question better than the PIAA fog. A single will fit perfectly just below and center of the stock lights but I am not sure if one is enough. It just aggravates me that the stock lights are so bad on the 2017. I do live in the country and commute on many miles of unlit twist roads and just dont feel safe when its pitch black dark.

I believe my 6" Rigid LED light bar will fill and tuck underneath the dash perfectly, much in the same config you've done here. That bar will throw around 3200 Lumens. I have it now on my 2012 Super Tenere'. Cost was a tick over $200. PIAA, IMHO is waaay over-rated. Had friends that had them on several BMW RT's back in the day and they worked fine - just so flippin' pricey.

This is the downfall of HID and now the newer LED headlight systems. They are so bright that they require a very sharp cut off to meet DOT regs and the combination exacerbates the problem on motorcycles making looking through the turn nearly impossible on a bike. The high contrast makes the dark section above the cutoff visually pitch black because your eyes can't adjust. Not much of a big deal on cars since they don't really lean to go around corners. The large reflector halogens on my 05 FJR are still way better in corners than the FZ-09 even with these fog lights added. LED headlights on motorcycles are good for power draw the "cool" factor but that's about it. The are decent for riding straight but there is such a negative impact when in corners they are practically dangerous. My 06 R6 with halogens unfortunately has reflector design with similar cutoff pattern and its damn near scary riding in tight technical curves after dark. I hoped the FZ would be better when I purchased it but sadly it is as bad if not worse. TwoWheelObsession, Can you tell me do the Fogs in this kit stay on when turning on the High beams? Maybe it was in the Vid and I missed it.

Well done I will have to do something similar. Did you have your high beams on when on that dark road? The other problem is if you have to dip for oncoming vehicles the fog lights will still be on, so hopefully don't dazzle the oncoming driver.
@TwoWheelObsession
@TwoWheelObsession 7 жыл бұрын
+Peter Clifford no, I never run the highs.
@pjcliffo
@pjcliffo 7 жыл бұрын
Here in Oz we often ride roads with no street lighting. You use your high beams and whatever else you have, you then switch to low beam when you detect an oncoming car. When they pass you switch back to high. High are your full lights and lows are dipped lights for oncoming cars. That's why I would worry if the fogs are still on and dazzling oncoming traffic, they could be wired to the highs to avoid this problem. Try your dark road again using highs and you will find it much better. However even on highs my Honda interceptor has your problem of disappearing corners and I will have to fit extra lights. Love your videos.

Great video mate, thank you! A few questions: -6+ months in how to you rate the improved visibility? -If you could, would you switch them in line with full beam (I.e. logical Fog "AND" Beam to trigger) so that you could dim for oncoming traffic? -Do you think mounting them more substantially to the forks would work better in terms of width of throw and jitter stability? -What color of underwear do you wear 😂.. Just kidding!

+slikmonk I don't know if it would have the power lead or have the clearance. It's only listed for the new model

I think it looks badass. Adds a little adventure bike look to it. Unique

Definitely not worth it for $500. The stock light is just fine when going straight or in the city, the problem is at aggressive lean angles. No offense but you weren't pushing very hard at all and I still lost sight through those turns for me to be comfortable. As someone who rides primarily at night and absolutely hates the stock headlight in that environment, this looks like a complete waste of money. Does anyone have experience with any other options?

Even at $350 it’s still about $150 more than they’re worth.

Pia and Denali are way overpriced. Harbour freight light is 10 percent the cost and much better .

Shouldn't have to be forced into spending an additional 500 to make up for a manufacturers poor design. Yamaha should be putting these on for free for every FZ09 they sell.
