@@ElectricProAcademy Also, 2020 NEC states that you can have no more than 18 inches of cable length is allowed between the cable entry to the box and the closest cable support. So you could leave up to 18 inches if your vanity location was really questionable. Of course, the staple still needs to be within 12 inches.

Thank you, blessings, very good video. I like pancakes that have the ground hole extended outward, because if you put a metal brake, the ground screw don't hits the metal brake .Thank you for your videos, they are great and I have learned much more. You are a great teacher who shares your knowledge with others, that speaks highly of you.

Thank you for your video! May I assume that I would use one of these pancake boxes if my layout lands dead center of a stud? Again, thanks.

Along with your method of mounting a 1/2 metal pancake box to code it’s good to either put a small wirenut or a piece of elect. tape on the black (hot) wire so it doesn’t come into contact with the metal box

Great video. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Much appreciated. Question: Can a pancake box “legally” be used for a porch light so long as the box is recessed in a wooden or plastic mounting block and not surface mounted? I know that the box itself is not weather proof. I can’t seem to find an answer to my question.

I always provide 6" of bare copper from the romex to the ground screw, them another 6" from the ground screw for instalation of the vanity light...!

I just came across a pancake box as I was trying to switch out my new homes vanity light. The light the builder had here just had one center screwlike attachment to the wall (sorry, don’t know the correct terminology!). I am trying to install one that has a plate that I need to attach to the wall. The wiring coming into the box being off center is keeping me from being able to get the plate flush to the wall. I also don’t know where to tuck the wires when i have them hooked up. Any advice? TIA!

If installing a ceiling fan using a pancake box can the ground from the Romex cable be connected to a ground cable that comes with the base of the fan rather than to a green screw to the pancake box?
@anxiousappliance Жыл бұрын
Ground connected to the box so it doesn't become energized due to a short.

Can you retrofit one over drywall or do you cut out a circle for it? Probably circle so you can grab the wire?
@tylerreidl84472 ай бұрын
Use an old work box just leave the wire loose in the cavity behind drywall, then cut the hole and pull wire through and finally install old work box

Why did you mark 72” up to the middle of the box as opposed to mounting the box above or below your mark? Is that just your preference or is there a standard height?

Center markings are used as an architectural, builder, contractor standard throughout the industry.

Please give code reference as to 12 inches along the ( length ) of the wire and not just within 12 inches. And is it a code requirement for a box bonding screw to be green. Or just common practice.
@bsmith85643 жыл бұрын
@@ElectricProAcademy Thanks for the reply. On the green bonding screw, the only reference I can find is 406.9(B) 250.146 does not say green. I have an older book maybe it has changed.

This is a non-compliant installation per NEC 316.16(b) Box fill calculations. Pan cakes boxes can be used for domed luminaire or similar canopy and terminate within that box. This is typically referring to a ceiling fan.

Why couldn’t you just move the box location over an inch or two, so you could have a deeper box, and then everyone could be happy.
@declanfarber3 жыл бұрын
@@ElectricProAcademy Yes, I’ll grant you that. But you’ll probably agree that if you could, you should, if esthetics are not biting you. Something about box fill etc, in practice if not law. We wouldn’t want to give anyone the impression that this is a preferred way of doing things.

Good luck having all you lights off center to get extra box fill. I would take it a step further and use no box on the rough in, that way if they push the cabinet an inch you can still be perfectly centered. Just use a cut in or pancake on final.

Why use 14 guage wire. I would never use less than 12 guage
@KameraShy3 жыл бұрын
14-gauge is perfectly appropriate for lighting. It is code for 15 amp receptacles although 12 gauge is good practice for receptacles regardless.
@chrisavcs3 жыл бұрын
12 gauge would fail for box fill, 3x2.25 is more than 6, which is the size of a pancake.
