How To Install a Bigger Window (1940 Project House)

Very easy to do. Just follow my long video and you'll be fine. These walls are built with 2x4's. You would used either 2x4 or 2x6 whatever your house is. Any header bigger than 5' long you'll need to use 2 jack studs.

I hear ya, but it's really not that bad. A larger opening can be a challenge for sure. Shoring up the roof or second floor is a big one.

just make sure you reading that tape measure right side up. None of the tolerances are tight. You have a lot of room for small error. Re doing it not to much trouble either.

you don't need to put that tar tape on the bottom of the opening? Also, are you planning to "seal" this home? I know these old homes were made originally to "breathe". love your vids!

They don't require you to put felt paper or Tyvek in the window opening before installing the window?

No, but you'll need to tape the window flange

How about felt or Tyvek on the house in general? You can also use weathershield roofing sealer in the window frame.

Oh god no, When I get to the siding I will show how to install a sealant tape over the flange. Using a caulk can be very bad. Can be!

No not on newer windows. However, you do need something but that's going to really depend on what type of siding you'll be using. On any window I install I used a "Tar tape" Look for it in Home Depot

Tom moves the camera and its always better if you can keep your camera steady, much better for the viewer

It is interesting in the fifties the window didn't need a header and now it needs a giant header. Seems pretty obvious there was no sag over the past 70ish years. I think i would have skipped it.

1x6 plank external walls. They don't make them like that anymore! Addressing the insulation in the walls is going to be a challenge if you are going to meet modern standards.
