Bricklaying With Steve and Alex

4 жыл бұрын

IN THIS WEEKS VIDEO WE CUT OUT A 600MM X900MM WINDOW OPENING IN A CAVITY WALL OF A HOUSE TO FORM A BRAND NEW WINDOW IN A KITCHEN.
WE SHOW US SETTING IT OUT , CUTTING WITH OUR BLUE BOSCH 9" ANGLE GRINDER AND THEN DRILLING WITH OUR TITAN SDS PLUS DRILL.
WHEN BOTH SKINS ARE OUT WE MIX SOME SAND AND CEMENT WITH RED DYE IN
WE THEN INSTALL A NEW CAVITY WALL LINTEL THEN A CAVITY TRAY. WE THEN START REPLACING THE BRICKS STARTING WITH THE 2 COURSES OF STAFFORDSHIRE BLUES INCLUDING SOME WEEP VENTS. THE TOP BED JOINT IS RE POINTED WITH A TUCK POINTER/FINGER POINTER TO MAKE SURE IT IS FULL.
NEXT THE INSIDE BRICKWORK IS BUILT TO FINISH THE JOB......ENJOY

Great video! I'm going to be bricking up a window in a porch and am nervous about when I take the lintel out, got 5 courses above so have made a strong arm,I see your exterior wall stayed up OK but you had a prop on the interior wall. Good job laying the brick, But you cannot just plumb cut brick jambs. The first 1" of the brick jambs are exposed. You have to tooth out the halves. If the window frame comes out past the face brick, it will probably not be sealed right?
@SteveAndAlexBuild
@SteveAndAlexBuild 4 жыл бұрын
For the sake of seeing 30 mm of face on the reveals toothing out etc would make the new window stand out like a sore thumb. The chances of matching the bricks and getting the mortar colour spot on are quite slim and would be very obvious just walking past. Just doing the cut is a stronger job and is only noticable up close. Thanks for watching and commenting 🧱👍🏽

@@SteveAndAlexBuild In construction books it says the proper way is to tooth out the bricks, but your point makes sense. The way you did in the video with the grinder is a better way of minimising bad looking edits to the wall.

Looks great guys. Love this channel every job shown from start to finish. Those final joints look a complete pain to do. It might sound a bit daft you being an accomplished brickie and me being just a know it all Plumber but instead of using your trowel would it be worth using one of those pointing guns. You know a mastic gun on steroids. Or would it just be too much hassle filling and cleaning it. Then you could just pump the stuff into the joint and use your finger trowel to help push it in. Or would that be like you telling me how to solder a joint lol

Just a pity the inner leaf hadn't been Thermalites, I love it when they are, you can cut them from the outside with just a panel saw, and use your grinder cut on the brickwork as a guide...sheer luxury...But I'd do little jobs like that all day long, especially on this mind numbing lock down...But just to add a rider, those frog downs are a pain in the arse, I'm not criticising here, but what I like to do on these jobs, is to tap in some slate packers on the last course, then pump the muck in with my pointing gun, you know you're safe for achieving a full joint that way, and it's a tad quicker and easier

I'm not a brickie so know nothing about this, but shouldn't you support the brickwork above the opening before you remove all the window bricks? I mean until that lintel is in place couldn't it all just collapse at any moment? Seems the acro bar goes up to support the inner wall only, but after all the brick removal, and there is no support for the outer wall - isn't that dangerous?

Sorry I have another question what brickhammer would you recommend a 16oz estwing a Stanley fatmax or a ox brickhammer thanks
@SteveAndAlexBuild
@SteveAndAlexBuild 4 жыл бұрын
Kyle Arts . The Estwings are very expensive ! , I’ve never liked them either . I have an ox but not keen on it and fat max gear is going down hill . If you go to the description below our videos and click on the ck brick hammer that’s the one we prefer plus if you buy one we will get a small commission at no cost to you ( sorry about the shameless plug ) 😬😂👍🏼🧱

I would have used strong boys right away to hold brickwork up. that brickwork could have all collapsed, very risky
@SteveAndAlexBuild
@SteveAndAlexBuild 4 жыл бұрын
Richard Cruickshank We had plenty of strongboys ready but even if the brickwork moved it only goes up in a triangle and you would only lose a few bricks not “collapse “ 🙄🧱👍🏽

Bricklaying With Steve and Alex i understand what your saying but the brickwork could have still fractured with all the weight above.
@SteveAndAlexBuild
@SteveAndAlexBuild 4 жыл бұрын
Richard Cruickshank . It’s actually couldn’t because brickwork is self supporting to a degree . If 5 bricks drop then only 4 above will follow then 3 , 2 then 1 🧱👍🏽

Retro Please .The cracks are only surface cracks in solid brick so not an issue . The work is remedial so we are working to what is already there so putting a level on that lintel is completely pointless ! As for the speed ..... we were done for 2 so I’d say that’s fast enough .
@SteveAndAlexBuild
@SteveAndAlexBuild 4 жыл бұрын
Shinobi . Because they were only surface cracks I’m happy there won’t be any problems and at the end of the day if there is a problem I will rectify it . I could very easily have edited that part out but nobody is perfect 🤷🏼‍♂️
