Hello again! Your garage looks like a pretty nice one, but I'd usually recommend a "dual tech" detector in a typical garage environment. It combines a standard PIR sensor with a seperate microwave detector, both of which have to trigger before the detector goes into alarm. If set up correctly, they can prevent false alarms from sources such as draughty garage doors and the like as the microwave element of the detector is not affected by changes in temperature (unlike a standard PIR). The Honeywell DT7550A is a good quality unit for not too much coin :)

Thanks for all the detailed advice- much appreciated ;-) It is possible to program the zone in the alarm panel for a double knock, but if that doesn't work I'll get the detector that you have recommended. Thanks again ;-)

At the PIR, the two tamper wires go into the two tamper terminals. At the alarm panel there are also two tamper terminals, but this one tamper circuit is for all the zones in the alarm. You have to wire all tamper wires in series at the panel (basically making one big loop), then put the two remaining tamper wires into the two tamper terminals. Thanks for the comment

It’s best practice to mount the PIR in the corner of a room, but away from any draughts, direct light, and shining objects which may hit the sensor causing false alarms. Also, you should always cover the backing screws on the housing with insulation tape to counter any chance of contact with the PCB which may cause a short circuit. Nice enough job, but it would have been a lot neater, and easier, to ceiling mount it.

I think this will help me so much 👍 I installed an additional pir (Zone 5) for my mum in her spare bedroom & for the life of me, I could not work out how the tampers are wired at the control panel, I was joining the tamper wires from Zone 5 to the existing tamper wires that are twisted at the control panel but everytime I undone the pir, the tamper would not cause the alarm to sound, now all I need to do is take 1 leg from the tamper screw terminal at the control panel & join that with 1 leg from my pir & then put the other remaining leg back into the tamper screw terminal. 👍😎

I think you mean multiple PIR's into one zone? You have to wire the power (+12 and -12v) in parallel Then you wire the tamper circuit and zone circuit in series. If you google for series/parallel wiring a diagram will show up that should make it crystal clear. Thanks for the comment 👍

The cable colours used for each device on the alarm should always be random. Otherwise it is conceivable that a device/sensor can be bypassed or disabled
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 10 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if that makes any sense? If anyone removes the bell box, any PIR, or removes the alarm or RKP covers the alarm will go into tamper. The only sensor that could be removed without the alarm going into tamper is the magnetic door contact on zone 1, but it doesn't matter if all the wires are the same colours you can soon see which wire does what from where it is connected to.
@Petertronic
@Petertronic 10 жыл бұрын
***** I was just saying that if the colour scheme used was known, the tamper circuit could be closed by splicing into the cable, then the sensor/bell box could be opened up without tripping it. Yes it is overkill I know, and the cable would not normally be exposed externally anyway! I'm sure I read about this in a magazine article a few years ago. Thanks for responding!

When replacing a PIR - how do you get pass the tamper protection? I believe ours needs replacing as the zone randomly causes false alarms when the alarm is set.
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 5 жыл бұрын
If you put the alarm in engineering mode (the code should be in the installation manual), you can then remove the cover from the PIR without the alarm sounding. If you don't know the engineering code manual, you can remove the cover and the alarm will go into tamper mode and the alarm will sound, but it should silence when you input the user code. Hi, great video. I am struggling with the serial concept and I was wondering if you could provide any more clarity. I think I might have got it from Shabz below but think I need it spelling out :) So in the video you had Yellow on the board (Yb) and Green on the board (Gb). You had Yellow from PIR1 (Yp1) & Green from PIR1 (Gp1). You took Yb off the board and joined it to Gp1. You then put Yp1 where you had taken Yb originally from. Got that bit!! But what happens when you introduce PIR2? What happens to Green from PIR2 (Gp2) and Yellow from PIR2 Yp2)? Do you take Yp1 back out of the board and connect to Gp2 and put Yp2 back in the board? Thanks in advance!!
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 9 жыл бұрын
Yes, I think you have it there. Basically you are making one large loop with all the Normally closed contacts on that zone, so each time you add another sensor to that zone you have to open up the existing normally closed circuit, this is done by adding one wire to the existing loop (by removing one of the wires from the panel and joining it to one wire from the new sensor), then the other wire from the new sensor goes into the terminal on the panel. I hope this makes sense ;-)

@@ultimatehandyman no, I'm still confused🤔 are you saying if have (for instance) 5 PIRs then those 5 wires would be twisted together with the wire in the board and so?
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 2 жыл бұрын
@@karmatingz5797 No, imagine you are making a daisy chain, you need to make a large loop. So if you had 5 PIR's you would have ten individual wires, these need joining to make a large loop. Lets say you are using green and yellow, you take green from PIR 1 and connect to Yellow of PIR 2, then connect Green of PIR 2 to Yellow of PIR 3, then green from PIR 3 to yellow of PIR 4, then green of PIR 4 to yellow of PIR 5, then you are left with a yellow and a green wire, which is terminated into the terminals on the alarm panel.

Hi I'm confused. If I add another pir to your panel would I take out the yellow wire in the tamper and then twist that with green wire from the new pir and put tape around this pair and put the remaining yellow wire from the pir back into the tamper in the panel? Is that what you mean by wiring in series? Hence you end up with lots of pairs of twisted green and yellow wires?
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 10 жыл бұрын
Yes, you just make one large loop with all the tamper wires then is any of the wires become open it puts the alarm in the tamper state.
@davismaxwell4670
@davismaxwell4670 6 жыл бұрын
Doing this will result in a tamper state, but you wouldn't know where the state has come from. To overcome this, cant you use two pair. Red 12v black 0v say blue alarm 1/n.c say white alarm 2/n.c blue goes from the panel straight to the alarm 1/n.c white goes to the tamper 1 Then you place a resistor from tamper 2 to alarm 2/n.c

You would wire it into the next zone on the panel, but in the instance of a PIR you need to wire it up to the + and - supply in parallel. The tamper wires are all wired in series (to make a loop). You can have more than one sensor per zone if you wish as long as the normally closed zone wires are wired in series.

The thing shaped like a staple is a link, it bridges between the two terminals keeping the circuit closed.
