After watching a few of your videos we decided that were going to plug the laptop into it, and see if the map sensor is even working. I'm going to wind up running an ssls on my swapped Nova. Carb sizing is based on math. (Cubic inches × max rpm) ÷ 3456 (if you're running a V8. 3456, though looking ike a funny number, is the conversion for cubic inches to cubic feet, and for 8 cylinders) 5.3L is 334 cubic inches Google says you can take a 5.3 to 6000rpm. So, (324 × 6000) ÷ 3456 = 562.5 So, at 6000rpm, the MOST cubic feet of air a NA 5.3L can move is 562.5. But, no motor runs at 100% volumetric efficiency, so we assume 80%. 562.5 × 80% = 450. So, carb selection for a 5.3L is 450cfm to 570cfm. Any smaller will choke the engine, and any larger will give a weak signal to the venturis, causing the engine to stumble when going from idle to WOT.

By far the best thing to do on a street driven vehicle is buy a high or mid rise dual plane. Then when you go to the track install your 1 or 2 inch open spacer. This will help that dual plane act more like a single plane for the track. And it takes 10 minutes. On the LS motors the single planes absolutely kill low and mid range torque.

I totaled my 02 2500HD, it still runs rides and drives but the frame is bent and it only has a limited amount of time before reaching terminal failure! I also have a solid 3rd gen Camaro just sitting in my back yard. Thinking about transplanting but this looks like a lot of work. Any tips? Don't bother? WDYT?
@NightWrencher
@NightWrencher Жыл бұрын
The engine should drop right in using the camaro transmission if it's a V8. You would need an adapter flexplate and spacer for the torque converter and adapter plates for the motor mounts but aside from that, the rest should be easy. Run the factory EFI harness, order a flashed PCM for like $150, install a high pressure fuel pump, install fuel injection rated lines, corvette return style regulator and you're basically done. Going carbureted might be easier but it is more expensive
@NightWrencher

The good old carburetor. I remember those. I would think they would be a nightmare with todays fuel. They were a pain with the old fuel. Lots of carb rebuild kits sold back in the day. How do you keep the engine from overheating with no fan shroud?
@NightWrencher
@NightWrencher 3 жыл бұрын
It actually runs pretty flawless, the key is in a modest tune. Not too rich not too lean. The engine is iron block but with aluminum heads, slightly rich tune and the radiator is larger than the stock one for that engine so I havnt had any issues even on a hot day like today in uphill traffic. I'm planning to make a nice shroud, just need to make sure it clears everything. I had the engine over heat once but that was because the fan clutch that came with the junkyard engine stopped working and wouldnt kick on anymore

I never really liked flex fans. The stock dodge truck big block radiator is massive so the clutch fan rarely kicks on, especially on the freeway. The radiators on the newer 1st gen trucks are smaller. Idk about the diesel trucks but I'm willing to bet the older trucks had bigger radiators

Hey man, you would have to go through HP tuners and creat a custom speed density tune that would ignore the fuel injectors and run spark only. You would also have to run a compatible TPS on the carburetor in order to run the electronic trans. Its not hard but its not that easy either. If you dont use the stock computer, youll have to run a trans controller for the 4L60 instead. Hope this helps

Serious question why does one need to change stuff to do with the trans for a carb conversion?
@NightWrencher
@NightWrencher Жыл бұрын
Because the transmission is computer controlled on efi ls engines. When you go carb, the aftermarket ignition modules dont have built in trans controllers so you either have to go with a non computer controlled trans like the 700r4, th350, th400, etc or find a trans controller that works with the trans you want to use or convert the newer trans to use a manual valve body.

@@NightWrencher I'm curious if you could possibly help me with all of this. I'm wanting to convert to carb to get rid of most of the wiring as possible especially the throttle wire. Do you have a list of everything needed to convert? I'm trying to decide if I should carb swap it or just do a throttle cable conversion. The throttle cable conversion involves having to have the engine tuned which I'd rather not have to deal with. I know this is asking a lot but I'd be forever grateful.
@NightWrencher
@NightWrencher Жыл бұрын
In the description of the video there is a parts list of what you will need with options. Total it up and see if its worth it for you to pay that and also buy a wideband and learn carb tuning because no carb is perfect out of the box. I have over 30 videos on just carb tuning alone that you will have to learn if you want everything to work right. If you have something that came factory with an efi LS like a silverado or camaro, leave it alone, you will only make it run worse with a carb I guarantee it.

Hi Nightwrencher! I have a bit of a complex question regarding bypass fuel regulator. I have a 1993 foxbody that was originally a 4 cylinder, putting in a carb'd LM7. I've got the stock mustang in tank fuel pump and stock fuel lines. From my research the stock mustang fuel pump puts out somewhere between 55-90 LPH. Can I use the aeromotive 13301 bypass regulator? Or do I have to get the overpriced Aeromotive EFI to Carb dual stage regulator 13220
@NightWrencher
@NightWrencher 10 ай бұрын
It honestly depends on the size of the return line and how much fuel the fuel pump puts out. Ive ran pressure regulators that would work fine on some fuel pumps pump get conpletely over powered on other fuel pumps. According to the parts book, the 1993 4cyl mustang has an 18gph pump at 51psi so the 13301 should work fine on that application

The msd box is designed to plug in and fire up. As long as you plug in the vacuum hose to it and the onboard map sensor hasnt died then it should get you going. The dual plane and mid rise intake single plane have only only a .060" inch difference in height. The hi rise or super victor are way taller so a dual plane with your edelbrock carb is as low as it can go. They make low profile air cleaners so maybe itll fit.
