In this video, I show you how to install a universal remote control on a ceiling fan in my bedroom. I bought this remote so we could turn the fan off when we're watching TV and back on when we're done.

My fan is being held up by the CANOPY! If I loosen the canopy the fan will fall! This is sooo wrong. Did not know this as I just bought the house.

@@robira1313 it should be the bracket attached to the circuit box, the canopy attached to the bracket! ceiling fans are not that expensive, do a diy or higher an app tech to do it for u!

I have seen fans where the ball/rod was held by the canopy. The canopy was structural. It’s not necessarily wrong.

@@handydadtv hmm I've seen bracket/ballrod holder attached to the box, canopy attached to the bracket/ballrod holder, this seems safer that way the canopy is not carrying the weight of the fan,

Thank you for sharing. I am replacing lost remote with new one. So in a nutshell I just need to figure out the code combination. I can try out 16 combinations and one of them will work. Previous remote was Hampton Bay.

We've just acquired a home and the remote that operates the ceiling fan-light fixture in the bedroom is broken although still operative. Most if not all of the videos I've seen suggest that if we want to replace the remote with a new one, then we need to change out the receiver as well as the transmitter. However, our realtor suggested that as long as the DIP switches are aligned, then the EXISTING receiver will respond to the NEW remote. In other words, I could open a new one, set the DIP switches to mirror the existing remote, and all will be good. I'm skeptical but thought I would ask. True?

+Sean Butler Thanks so much! For the remote to work correctly, you need to leave the power on all the time from a wall switch. Use the pull chain to set the fan on HIGH and don’t touch it again.

Wouldnt this mess up the load on the motor? Unless you buy a 3 way switched remote and connevt it all wires correctly to the capacitor on the fan then i think its gonna destroy the motor long term since the pull chain ac motors arent designed for a motor controller. Or am i wrong?

Would this still work if the fan and light are on different switches? I have two hot wires, a white wire, and a ground wire coming from the ceiling, but the receiver input only has two input wires

I would recommend you leave the fan switch on all the time. Otherwise the remote won’t work. You need to choose if you want the light to be controlled by the remote or the wall switch. You can’t have both.

Muy util. / Very useful. You have save my Hampton Bay Fans of being dispose because the three-speed switches last no more than 3 years. Homedepot does not sell original parts for its fans and after market switches are garbage in general. Gracias

My canopy (where the fan connects to the ceiling) is very small on a slanted ceiling. Can I buy a larger one? The box won't fit in there. :-/

I don’t think so, but you might be able to take down the fan and put the module in the box above the fan.

I asked a handy man to install a fan remote in a ceiling fan. He said it could not be done because my fan is "wired on a single pole and the wires that split the fan/light are not there". I am clueless as to what he means and my other fan, that is identical, has the same remote installed and it works just as it is supposed to... Thoughts?

Get a second opinion; call a different handy man. It sounds like he’s saying there is no blue wire for the fan light (I’m assuming you have a fan light.) If that’s true, then you can still install the remote, but you wouldn’t be able to use the light. The other alternative is to get a new fan that includes a remote.

As an electrician of 30yrs!!People please stop this nonsense!!Retrofitting a remote & reciever to a pull chain fan will cause problems down the road.Also it will void any repair on the fan if you have a home warranty. This is a new fad that people think is cute & will save them money.Purchase a fan that's has & is designed for remote use. Most electricians do not do the retrofit game,handymen do!!I just had an installation canceled from a client who was determined to force us fix his retrofit fan that is having(motor issue's)

Yes, you can still do it. The receiver isn’t pushed into the box anyway, it’s tucked into the fan’s ceiling bracket.

I think it will work with any fan. Pretty sure it works by pulsing the power to the fan motor on and off very quickly. The longer it’s off between pulses, the slower it goes.

It probably comes from a wall switch. You can connect that to the light.

You need to use a tester to determine if the black is constantly hot and if the red is switched. The remote unit needs constant power. You can decide to power the light (usually a blue wire) from the switch (red wire) instead of the remote.
