I really love recessed Floyd type bridge cavities, less need to an angled neck, less need for a higher neck heel to get the neck a little higher than usual. it would even bee possible to get away with just 2-3 degree neck angle when building Les Paul with carved top due and floyd type of bridge and it's recessed routing for the tremolo. Even if I prefer routing templates or using my CNC it´s actually pretty good to have this knowledge how do do this with no template at all.. thanks for a great video.

This is how I installed my trem except I did it on another piece of wood that I turned into a template, that way it didn’t matter if I made a mistake and I had a template at the end of the day.

Would love to see you cryo treat a floyd base plate on this channel. Just so that more people know it's a cheap easy option to improve the life of those knife edges by a small amount. Even dry ice and denatured alcohol can give a small improvement, even though it's about a hundred degrees warmer than liquid nitrogen, because it can still convert some of that austenite into martensite. To get any significant amount of fine carbide precipitation you'd need nitrogen. (afaik anyway) A floyd rose has the exact type of mechanical wear that cryo treatment is good for.

Amazing tutorial. I've built a Les Paul, but now I'm thinking in installing a FR instead of a hard tail and a Tune-o-matic. And this was exactly what I was looking forward. I need to also look forward on how to carve the rear part and how deep I shold go. I'm an amateur building guitars, and this will be my first FR. Thank you so much. greetings from Spain

There's a lot of great info in this video Will, which will transpose over to other styles of bridges too. Great idea using the double sided tape and scrap to make a template. Although it's only relevant if you have a flat guitar. Carved tops are more of a challenge.

Good job using the drill press for the studs and savy thinking with the makeshift template. I myself have abandoned the router for Floyd installs except if i have to do back cavity carving.. the chisel has just been the safest & most accurate for me on the bridge & locking nut installs nowdays. Good video tho and good work!

I've only built three guitars. Haven't put a trem on any of them yet. Kinda working my way up to it. Each one being a one off, l don't have any templates to speak of. So l use the scrap wood method you just laid out. It's worked out pretty well so far. For the neck pocket in particular, I've shimmed my routing guide with a layer or two of tape. Im paranoid about routing the pocket oversized. I'll route it, check the pocket. Should be too tight. So l pull a layer of tape and go around again. Sneaking up on it with each pass and layer of tape removed. I realize it's probably an inefficient way of doing things. But untill l get a little more skilled and confident, it's gonna have to do. I'm broke as Hell. Literally CAN NOT afford to make the mistake of a oversized neck pocket. To me it seems that's the ONE mistake l can't see a way to overcome. Yet. You're videos have been a tremendous help and inspiration to me Will. Thanks for all you've done.

Hey Dr. I really enjoy your channel I even bought a video from you years ago to help me memorize all the notes on the entire fret board..so Thankyou for that. Anyways my question is , I just purchased a 1984 usa fender with a Kahler Killer 2700 trem. Will do I have to do some drilling/routing to change that to a Floyd rose trem? My first fender electric. I’ve owned nothing but deans and a few Washburns in the past. Looking forward to hearing from you. And do you do this kind of work for paying customers?

Hey Will, hope your doing okay? When you file the slots in the nut, if you have a high E thats a 9, do you use a file thats a 9 or do you use a file thats a 10??? What do you do with all the other strings?? Just wondering, as one would need like 6 to 10 or more files which can get stupid crazy expensive?? Have you ever heard of some one making their own using feeler guages that one filed teeth into?? Thx.

@pchykins6680 Ай бұрын
Just to clarify; why did you put the front edge of the bridge saddles in the 25.5" mark? Shouldn't it be that it's the edge of the point where the strings rest on the bridge that should be in the 25.5" mark? Because an FR bridge isn't exactly like a Strat bridge where the edge of the bridge saddles are where the strings actually rest. In an FR bridge, the strings kinda rest around 1/2" further back (and higher) of the saddles. I'm no expert on guitars, but it seems that you just made an FR guitar setup at 26.0" scale length (approximately).
@manfp7248
@manfp7248 4 ай бұрын
I wonder why some FR look like it rests flat on the body and didn’t need to lower the surface with the router. I guess it depends on the finger board’s height and angle but how shall I measure that height ? i.e. : at which height should the cords be from the frettes ? I am building a setup with a Strats Squier and an aftermarket neck.

All scale length is ,is the frets are spaced farther apart, all the notes are the same
@billjackson9702
@billjackson9702 10 ай бұрын
@@gm-lb9oe scale length is the distance from the nut to the 12th fret doubled. That determines the distance from the nut to the bridge saddle. If it's not correct for the neck being used, the instrument won't intonate properly and it won't sound right. The frets are spaced differently on those two neck scale lengths.
