Keeping your plants properly watered especially if they are in pots or hanging baskets can be a challenge during the summer months so today I install a micro drip watering system controlled by a timer so everything will be properly watered and stay healthy even if I'm not around.

Looks like a plant saver if you go away on holiday at least until there is a hosepipe ban, maybe another project would be a tank for rainwater catchment with a solar powered pump. A version with a rain sensor to save on water when it's not required would be nice.

Mark - drip irrigation systems are usually exempt from hosepipe bans (or they have been since 2012) there are some provisions though. You must be on a metered water supply; you must have a timer (Stuart does); you must have a pressure reducing valve (not clear from this video); the individual drips must be on or below the surface of the soil (no spray or mist tips are allowed) (Stuart is okay on that) Provided these are followed the in most cases your fine. The current ban in the south of England allows drip irrigation however it is worth noting that the exemption is not mentioned in the legislation and is only allowed by the discretion of your water company. Generally they see drip irrigation as something to be encouraged as it uses 90% less water than a hose and 50% less than a watering can.

I thought it worth posting separately about hosepipe bans in the UK. Drip irrigation systems are usually exempt from hosepipe bans (or they have been since 2012) there are some conditions though. More nanny state rules which has no effect on the water companies making millions of pounds profit every year from us poor consumers., whilst continuing to breach their operating conditions.

Yet another proper DIY job! Fantastic system with peace of mind knowing your plants won't die when you go away on holiday. Great video yet again. 👍

I installed a comprehensive watering system in my garden several years ago (Hozelok) its been great. I have three timers on two separate feeds. I mainly installed this for holiday periods and its worked perfectly for the past 5 years. Being in a hard water area I do have to change/clean the drip nozzles annually as they fur up. Also I take the timers off for the winter period as any residual water in them that freezes destroys them as I learnt to my cost the first year. (However Hozelok did replace them FOC)….

as a PS to my post below, watering systems generally use 75% less water than sprinklers and hand watering with a hosepipe as they target the roots directly.

Fantastic job! I really like the idea with the loop, my instinct told me to go up in the middle and branch out to the sides left and right. I will try the loop idea when I build irrigation for my garden. Cheers!

Two comments. One, you didn’t discuss what the limit is on the number of emitters that the half inch hose can handle. And second, you didn’t put a cap on the unused outlet at the timer to keep the creepy crawley‘s from moving in. Other than that you did a really nice job of installing it I learned a couple of things.

My parents had a lot of plants in containers, and used a similar system. It worked well for 20+ years. Different plants/containers need different amounts of water, so the fact that you can adjust the drip rate allows you to adjust for this. It's best to have them drip slowly, for longer, so the water can soak in and be drawn up by the soil, by capillary action, rather than running off the dry compost and running out of the bottom of the container. I seem to recall there were also spray attachments and "leaky hoses" you can bury under the compost.

Rather than splash out on the Gardena kit I Knocked one of these up with a £20 kit of irrigation parts off the bay and then added a £50 timer. Hopefully my garden will look just as nice on my return to it in a few weeks! I intend for next summer to use rainwater from some linked water butts.

A lovely clean job providing an answer to my watering problems having lost too many wall hung basket plants( and a living wall last year). You signed off with a lingering moment for the sound of running water. A proper DIY water feature is the way forward Stuart and would look great in your garden

I hope the hosepipe ban from 5pm 05/08/22 doesn’t include your irrigation system ?! ANOTHER perfect/enjoyable video for my relax time on a pleasant Saturday evening ( as always a very tidy, excellent job ) why you don’t have millions of subscribers is beyond me, by far your channel is in the top 3 on KZbin ( I can’t decide who’s number one, yourself, self sufficient me or Captain Kleeman, all excellent/relaxing viewing ) !Thank you Stuart 👍

ECO setting will perform a short water then a gap then the main water. This is to soak the soil so you don't waste water with run off from dry soil.

Considering this watering system and your lawn pop-ups - is there any plan to capture rainwater and create a system that is fed through this rather than mains water? I would expect that would be a popular video. EDIT to add; sorry - just seen other comments suggesting similar subjects.
