In this video Tim will show you how to install a lunchbox locker, specifically a Torq brand lunchbox locker! Other brands may be the same or similar installation.
Torq Locker info:
TORQ Locker is 100 percent Made in the USA with 100 percent USA raw materials.
Torq-Masters Industries offers an unprecedented 4 year warranty on the TORQ Locker with no tire size, horsepower limits or loopholes, double the warranty of any other automatic locker on the market.
A spacer cup is used in all other lunchbox locker designs, Torq-Masters eliminated it. The spacer keeps the cam gear and axle gear on axis, but it can break if an axle shaft breaks, also, the spacer is the root of the occasional "bang" this style of locker is known for. The Torq Locker won't do that.
Easiest install of any locker out there. No spacers to fiddle with, no pins to insert. Just drop it in, 2 small simple springs to insert, 1 tolerance measurement to check and you are done!
We literally drove this locker straight out of the shop and to the Rubicon and wheeled the entire trail. It performed awesome! A simple, stout, high quality American made locker... And the price might surprise you. Check out the website!

I have a lunchbox locker in a Comanche and it is sketchy as can be in snow. If one tire locks under braking while in two wheel drive it try’s to lock the locker. Lol. The whole truck jumps and bucks. Just keep that in mind if your driving in snow on a partially cleared road. Great Video man.

I've run the TORQ Locker from TorqMasters for the past 2- almost 3 years in the D30 in my '11 JK . It is , handsdown , the single best,most noticeable difference and useful off-road mod I have added to a heavily modified , trail only Jeep. Cora & Eric being so awesome to be customers of only ramps their USA made products better. I installed in garage myself in about 3 hrs , taking my time. It is silent on asphalt and does not clack at all when turning full lock in 4wd, but I also run RCVs and cry'oed Yukon RPs. There's a full review of mine & other customers at the TorqueMasters web site. An amazing company and an amazing solution for a front locker. I have tortured it quite hard & it keeps the 37s digging and pulling ...⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I have one of these in my Dana 35 and it is one of the best things I have done. I didn't want to invest a lot of money in a Dana 35 but I also didn't have the money to do an axel swap so for the $270 that the Aussie cost I did that for now. It has been absolutely amazing. Not one regret installing it. I daily drive my jeep and have not had any issues with the locker, even with it in the rear. A lot of people told me that I would eat tires because I put it in the rear but that hasn't been my experience. The only thing I have seen difference is the normal clicking of the locker and increased traction. I would tell anyone this is a great bang for the buck project.

Like the other dudes are saying. I drive a 79 f150 4x4 as my daily (just a little 6 banger). The dana44 in front or the 9in in rear are wanting some sort of locker for canyon/desert crawl'n. Here in Idaho, we do drive in snow. Not freeway speeds... but normal streets. Would like to see how it does 'just driving around'. maybe mimic it in light dirt/mud or something. Looks cheap and easy. I like it.

Hey Tim, good to see another video from you. Question about thine locker, how are the on road manners of this locker? Their website says it has the best of all lunchbox lockers, but I'd like to hear from someone whose actually running it.
@TorqMastersIndustries
@TorqMastersIndustries 5 жыл бұрын
A front locker has no affect on road manners, because you are in 2WD typically. A rear TORQ Locker is where you see the great road manners, and here's why: the TORQ Locker eliminated the "spacer" which is found in all other lunchbox lockers. The spacer can sometimes slide down the axle shaft and bind on the cross pin. When it releases, you get a loud "pop" or "bang" that some people complain about on the forums. Without the spacer, no 'bang." Typically these complaints are for rear lockers. A rear locker will click when you coast through turns. If you hit the gas hard in a turn, you can get the 2 rear tires to chirp.
@bleepinjeep
@bleepinjeep 5 жыл бұрын
Because I have manual locking hubs now I'll almost never run this on the street in 2wd simply because I don't need to. That being said, while messing around with it, driving with hubs locked in 2wd in a parking lot it's honestly barely audible while turning (using 75 140 gear oil) and there are zero handling characteristic changes. I haven't tried locking the tires up on pavement while turning or anything, lol. But under normal driving circumstances you shouldn't really notice it at all IMO. Great upgrade to my Jeep.

Billy T No you do not, that's the beauty of the TORQ Locker. As long as the ring gear goes back on in the same position, you do not have to re-set backlash. An index mark on the ring gear to carrier is an easy way to make sure the ring gear goes back on in the same place.
@bleepinjeep
@bleepinjeep 5 жыл бұрын
Nope. Just mark the ring gear there it mounts up to the carrier. I did this before unbolting it but neglected to mention that in the video. The locker came with great instructions that mention and show you how to do this.

Okay so what's the difference in handling between open diff and lunchbox locker on pavement? My XJ is a daily driver but wanting a locker for when I do go wheeling. Obviously an Air Locker would be the way to go, open diff when needed and fully locked when needed. Just don't want to pay $1,000/axle.
@bleepinjeep
@bleepinjeep 5 жыл бұрын
On pavement no handling difference in 2WD if you add one to the front. If you add one to the rear it shouldn't be noticed on pavement either unless you gun it around a corner... In which case it'll likely lock up and you'll spin both tires... Under normal driving conditions they'll basically be undetectable expect you might hear a low clicking noise while turning at slow speeds but if you use thicker gear oil you may not even hear that! I'm surprised how quite mine is.

There are pro's and con's to mechanical lockers vs. selectable lockers. Mechanical lockers are reliable, sturdy, and have few parts to fail. They allow for wheel speed differentiation (so you can turn), even while applying torque to both wheels. Mechanical lockers can click, which some people find annoying, but for $1,000 less than a selectable (plus install), it's an easy decision for many to choose mechanical. Selectable lockers usually require professional installation, they have smaller parts, and air lines or cables that can fail. In the On position, a front selectable locker is very hard to steer. We've seen people get into trouble, and even a few roll overs, when the driver forgot to turn on his lockers before an obstacle. A mechanical locker is set it and forget it, it's always there for you.

Great video. Lunchbox lockers are great, but I would never put one in the front of a vehicle that will be daily driven in rain or snow. I think they are primarily offroad use only. To dangerous to drive at highway speed in foul weather.

I've had aussies in the front and rear of my XJ for the past 5 years, and I'll be putting TORQ lockers in my one tons, driven in rain plenty of times, and even in some harsh NY winters. As long as you don't drive like a dipshit, they are easily manageable and you can quickly adjust to how they act and predict what the vehicle's going to do better.

Lunchbox lockers are designed for both on-road and off-road use. Many of our customers install our lockers in their daily drivers. For snow and Icy conditions we say use common sense and don't drive recklessly.

My ranger came oem with a limited slip rear end but I want more than that now. Would this locker be acceptable as the main locker??? I cannot afford an arb air setup. Aussie Lockers and TORQ Lockers can not be installed in a Limited Slip carrier, only an Open carrier. You may be able to install one in your front axle depending on which axle you have.

Thinking bout doing this on my JKU, the reality is, I have to drive a thousand miles on pavement before I can get to a hundred miles of rock trails Is this AKA a Detroit locker? If installed on the front axel only, while in two wheel on the road do you still get the clicks on turns on the pavement?
@bleepinjeep
@bleepinjeep 5 жыл бұрын
You will unless you have manual locking hubs like I do. Honestly with the thick gear oil that was recommended to add in the instructions specifically if the clicking was of concern.... I can't really hear it from inside the Jeep with my hubs locked on pavement and in 2wd. I don't think you'll notice it much but it does click.

A Detroit Locker is a Mechanical Locker, but operates on a different mechanical principal. A Detroit replaces the entire carrier and requires a Ring and Pinion setup - which most people choose to hire a professional to do. A Lunchbox locker just replaces the spider gears in the carrier and can be installed by the average person. We like to say, if you can change the brakes on a car, you can install a Lunchbox locker.

@TorqMastersIndustries

delinquentdesign TORQ Locker is more expensive than Spartan. TORQ is made in the USA, had a 4 year warranty with no tire size restrictions, and is a considerably stronger design. The Spartan is made in China, has a 1 year warranty with tire size restrictions, like you can't run larger than a 33" tire on a Dana 30.

so does the lunch box locker somewhat work like a LSD ?
@bleepinjeep
@bleepinjeep 5 жыл бұрын
Not really. Lots of animation vids of their operation on KZbin. Basically they're locked all the time unless you're turning with no pressure on it such as if you are costing around a turn, in which case it will "ratchet" allowing the wheel speeds to differentiate.
@TorqMastersIndustries
@TorqMastersIndustries 5 жыл бұрын
Another difference - With a LSD, if you lift a tire, all the torque goes to the tire in the air. With the TORQ Locker, torque is sent to both tires, which is a huge help on the trails.

This locker will allow you to turn smoothly but still provides traction to both tires in the axle it's installed in. A welded diff will provide traction to both tires all the time but won't allow for tire speed differential in a turn.

Spartan is made by "USA Standard Gear" but just because it says USA in the name, doesn't mean it's made in the USA. The Spartan Locker box also has a manipulated USA flag with big "USA" under the flag, but if you read above the big "USA" you will see "Assembled In", which just means they put it in a box in the USA, their parts are made overseas. Just google their box, you will see it. I can't post photos here.
